The Education regulations state that parents should not take their children out of school during term time. Applications for leave must be made in advance by a parent with whom the child lives and can only be authorised by the school in exceptional circumstances. The School Curriculum

The National Curriculum

We aim to give each child the opportunity to gain experience and skills Three Core in all curriculum areas through a broad and balanced programme of Subjects: work. Even though it is very important that the traditional '3R's' are given prominence, we also feel that there are lots of other subjects the  English children should be given the chance to explore, developing skills as they learn.  Mathematics We teach the National Curriculum with a subject-based and, where it is  Science possible, a cross-curricular approach. This means we enjoy teaching the subjects within a theme whenever it is practical. We do this because we feel it gives enormous benefit to the children when they Foundation become involved in these projects. It helps generate an enthusiasm Subjects: towards the work and links together the knowledge of different subjects whilst teaching the skills that primary aged children need to acquire.  Art and Design Some subjects or parts of subjects cannot be organised in this way,  Computing and therefore we teach them separately. Our teachers consider how best to teach the skills and knowledge as they plan the detail of the  Design and Technology work.

 Modern Foreign We adopt a balanced view in teaching, regarding it as important to Languages (KS2) work from children's own experiences, and valuing practical learning  Geography situations.

 History We continually challenge the children to remember important factual information. Every child is expected to attempt to learn number and  Music language facts because they play an essential role in the development  Religious Education (RE) of further knowledge. We organise work to be done at home to supplement work completed in school time, and ask, through our  Physical Education (PE) shared agreement, for parents to support their children in these important tasks.  Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education Our carefully planned learning programmes are taken from the (PSHE) National Curriculum. Long-term plans are developed on a two-year cycle, medium term plans are written covering each term in more detail, and short-term plans cover the day-to-day delivery of the lessons.

Religious Education is also part of our school curriculum, ensuring we foster a reflective response to the spiritual, moral and cultural challenges facing our children growing up in the modern world. Curriculum Information

Sporting Aims and Provision

The National Curriculum highlights four strands in PE:

1. Acquiring and developing skills 2. Selecting and applying skills, tactics and compositional ideas 3. Evaluating and improving performance 4. Knowledge and understanding of health and fitness Through PE, pupils learn how to plan, perform and evaluate their work, enabling them to improve their quality and effectiveness. Through this process, they discover their aptitude, abilities and preferences and how to make choices about getting involved in lifelong physical activity. KS2 children attend Catterick Swimming Pool for regular swimming lessons and all children take part in Cluster sporting activities as well as inter school competitions. Upper KS2 children are invited to take part in a bi-annual visit to an Outdoor Residential Centre.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education is taught across the school. It encourages children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society.

The children are given the knowledge, skills and understanding to:  Develop confidence and responsibility and to make the most of their abilities  Develop a healthy and safe lifestyle  Develop good relationships and respect the differences and similarities between people  Develop a sound understanding of risk  Develop the skills necessary to make informed decisions

We develop these themes sensitively and care is taken to introduce sometimes difficult subject matter in a way that creates a positive mental attitude within each child. Sex and relationships is also a part of the teaching programme. Structured teaching takes place in upper Key Stage 2 and lessons involve the school nurse. SEN & Early Years Provision

Special Educational Needs

Hipswell Church of England Primary School welcomes children with Special Educational Needs (SEN). An established Special Educational Needs Policy exists within the school and is available to assist you if you feel your child has Special Needs.

There is a designated member of staff responsible for the coordination of Special Educational Needs within the school (SENCO).

Our aims are:  To ensure that pupils have access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum  To educate pupils with special educational needs, wherever possible, alongside their peers.  To ensure self-esteem is preserved or enhanced.  To identify and assess pupils with special education needs at an early stage.  To meet the individual needs of all children who have special educational needs.  To encourage effective liaison between the school and parents/guardians  To form and maintain links with outside agencies.

Cluster Groups and The Swaledale Alliance

Our school is part of the Catterick Group of seven schools. Within this Cluster, staff are able to share expertise, training and resources. We are involved in multi school events where the children have the opportunity to mix with peers from other schools.

We are also part of The Swaledale Alliance. This is a 52 school partnership based across North Yorkshire. This collaboration of 51 primary schools and 1 secondary school works together to improve outcomes for all their young people.

Assemblies

Being a Church school affects all that we do. It means trying to treat everyone, pupils, staff and parents, as valuable and significant people. This is something we want the children to learn as well. Our regular assemblies are a fundamental way of helping the children to develop their own values. There are regular class assemblies and, once a fortnight, members of the local clergy help to lead the school assembly, which includes Christian songs and prayers. Assemblies are used to help celebrate the children’s achievements and to increase their sense of being part of the whole school family.

Complaints

In the event of a complaint arising about the school or a member of staff, the complainant should first of all approach the Headteacher. If the Headteacher is unable to resolve the matter to the satisfaction of the complainant, the matter should be referred to the Governing Body.
