Council of Lutheran Churches: Reformation 500 Hymnody and Christian War-Resistance: Voices for Peace 1914–1918 Rev’d Dr Clive Barrett Clive Barrett was County Ecumenical Officer for West Yorkshire Ecumenical Council. Author of Subversive Peacemakers: War-Resistance 1914-1918 (Lutterworth, Cambridge, 2014), he is Chair of the Trustees of the Peace Museum, Bradford, and a visiting fellow in Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Leeds. Overview This paper will consider how several strands of Protestant tradition appear from the perspective of those who resisted war in Europe in 1914–18, some of whom had assembled for a 1914 pan-Protestant peace conference on Lake Constance, 499 years after the death of Jan Hus. > Within Unitas Fratrum, there were those holding a clear commitment to nonviolence. The anti-militarist writing of Jon Wyclif (c 1330–84), the stand of Jan Hus (c 1371–1415), and the rebuilding of the movement under Petr Chelčický (c 1390–1460), all contributed to a heritage of nonviolence for the emerging Moravian Church. War-resistance and nonviolence are part of the pre-history of the Reformation. > Within the British Methodist and Nonconformist traditions, music and hymn- singing provided a means for expressing and bolstering faith and commitment, and for standing firm to one’s conscience (cf Luther), including a commitment to war-resistance in the name of Christ > Within Lutheranism, this paper examines two individuals whose broad commitment to peace transcended narrow nationalisms. Wyclif, Hus and Chelčický Richmond is a small town on the River Swale in North Yorkshire, dominated by an eleventh-century Norman castle. -

Commissioned by Thames Water Utilities Limited Clearwater Court Vastern Road Reading RG1 8DB CROSSNESS SEWAGE TREATMENT WORKS NATURE RESERVE & SOUTHERN MARSH AQUATIC INVERTEBRATE SURVEY Report number: CPA18054 JULY 2019 Prepared by Colin Plant Associates (UK) Consultant Entomologists 30a Alexandra Rd London N8 0PP 1 1 INTRODUCTION, BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY 1.1 Introduction and background 1.1.1 On 30th May 2018 Colin Plant Associates (UK) were commissioned by Biodiversity Team Manager, Karen Sutton on behalf of Thames Water Utilities Ltd. to undertake aquatic invertebrate sampling at Crossness Sewage Treatment Works on Erith Marshes, Kent. This survey was to mirror the locations and methodology of a previous survey undertaken during autumn 2016 and spring 2017. Colin Plant Associates also undertook the aquatic invertebrate sampling of this previous survey. 1.1.2 The 2016-17 aquatic survey was commissioned with the primary objective of establishing a baseline aquatic invertebrate species inventory and to determine the quality of the aquatic habitats present across both the Nature Reserve and Southern Marsh areas of the Crossness Sewage Treatment Works. The surveyors were asked to sample at twenty-four, pre-selected sample station locations, twelve in each area. Aquatic Coleoptera and Heteroptera (beetles and true bugs) were selected as target groups. A report of the previous survey was submitted in Sept 2017 (Plant 2017). 1.1.3 During December 2017 a large-scale pollution event took place and untreated sewage escaped into a section of the Crossness Nature Reserve. The primary point of egress was Nature Reserve Sample Station 1 (NR1) though because of the connectivity of much of the waterbody network on the marsh other areas were affected. -

During a short collecting trip to Montenegro in 2014, 26 locations were sampled and 692 specimens belonging to 45 species of water beetles were collected. The following species are recorded for the first time from Montenegro: Haliplus dal- matinus J. Müller, 1900, Haliplus heydeni Wehncke, 1875, Haliplus laminatus (Schaller, 1783), Hydroporus erythrocephalus (Linnaeus, 1758), Hyphydrus anatolicus (Guignot, 1957), Melanodytes pustulatus (Rossi, 1792) and Rhantus bistriatus (Bergsträsser, 1778). The addition of these seven species brings the total of Hydradephaga known from Montenegro to 91 species. The new records are presented and an updated checklist of the Hydradephaga of Montenegro is given. ŠġASTNÝ Abstract: Hydroporus glasunovi glasunovi ZAITZEV 1905 and Hydroporus glasunovi dolini nov.ssp. are members of the planus-group of Hydroporus CLAIRVILLE 1806. They are distributed in the mountainous regions of Central Asia and north- western China. The nominotypical subspecies is re-described and the new subspecies treated in a differential diagnosis. The male and female genitalia as well as the habitus of both subspecies are illustrated. Lectotypes are designated for Hydroporus glasunovi ZAITZEV 1905, and Hydroporus macrocephalus GSCHWENDTNER 1923. The zoogeographic characteristics of the mountain areas in Central Asia are discussed and some notes on the biology of both subspecies are given. Introduction In 1991 the junior author collected in Tajikistan (Fan Mountains, Lake Kulikalon) a series of Hydroporus provisionally identified as H. glasunovi ZAITZEV 1905. More or less at the same time, the Vienna Museum (NMW) acquired material which was col- lected by V.G. Dolin in Central Asia and which also was at first identified as that spe- cies. But serious doubts remained about the identity of all these specimens. This was due to the inadequate description and the lack of any illustrations in the original work (ZAITZEV 1905: 26), and, additionally, to the different ways in which the species was treated after Zaitzev by several authors. -

A total of 125 water beetle species were identified. The dominant species were Scarodytes halensis and Laccobius minutus, representing the argillophilous component. Eurytopic, lake and riverine, and peatland species were also identified. Pakulnicka INTRODUCTION Anthropogenic water bodies, formed as a result of mineral extraction, are an important element of a hydrographical network. However, they have not aroused much interest among hydrobiologists. Polish literature on aquatic Coleoptera provides scant information on artificial reservoirs, although the ecology of water beetles is relatively well-known. Noteworthy works devoted to this subject include those by Łęgosz-Owsianna (1955), Tranda (1959), Biesiadka (1977), Mielewczyk (1997, 1997a) as well as by Kowalik and Buczyński (2003). -

Stjepan Krčmar U ovom radu je istražen kvalitativni sastav entomof aune na četiri močvarna staništa od me đunarodnog značenja u Republici Hrvatskoj. To su Park prirode Kopački rit, Park prirode Lonjsko polje, Delta rijeke Neretve i Crna Mlaka. Glavni cilj specijalističkog rada je objediniti sve objavljene i neobjavljene podatke o nalazima vrsta kukaca na ova četiri močvarna staništa te kvalitativno usporediti entomofau nu pomoću Sörensonovog indexa faunističke sličnosti. Na području Parka prirode Kopački rit utvrđeno je ukupno 866 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 84 porodice i 513 rodova. Na području Parka prirode Lonjsko polje utvrđeno je 513 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 24 porodice i 89 rodova. Na području delte rijeke Neretve utvrđeno je ukupno 348 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 89 porodica i 227 rodova. Za područje Crne Mlake nije bilo dostupne literature o nalazima kukaca. Velika vrijednost Sörensonovog indexa od 80,85% ukazuje na veliku faunističku sličnost između faune obada Kopačkoga rita i Lonjskoga polja. Najmanja sličnost u fauni obada utvrđena je između močvarnih staništa Lonjskog polja i delte rijeke Neretve, a iznosi 41,37%. -

Aquatic macro-invertebrate monitoring at Paull Holme Strays, East Yorkshire May 2008 A report for the Environment Agency Martin Hammond, Wildlife Consultant, 110 Kingsway West, Acomb, York YO24 4QB Summary The creation of new inter-tidal habitat at Paull Holme Strays (East Yorkshire) necessitated the loss of an established borrow pit with a rich invertebrate fauna but resulted in the creation of a new pond and dykes behind the re-aligned Humber Bank in 2003. The macro-invertebrates of these new water bodies have been monitored during spring visits since 2004. The four regular sampling points were re-visited in May 2008. In 2004, the car park pond (SP1) supported a freshwater assemblage including several water beetles and water bugs which are highly characteristic ‘pioneer’ species. Sampling in May 2005 showed that the pond has become highly saline and supported only a very impoverished fauna. Indeed by May 2006, the only ‘core’ species1 of macro-invertebrate recorded was the brackish water amphipod Gammarus zaddachi. By May 2007, there had been a marked recovery with seven core taxa present, four of which are obligately brackish water species and three of which are freshwater species which tolerate some salinity. This trend continued into 2008 with 14 core taxa recorded, only three of which are closely associated with brackish water. Electrical conductivity (which is related to salinity) has fallen to around 10% of the 2005 level. In May 2006, the car park dyke (SP2), which is hydrologically connected to the pond, had also become saline. This water body was by then dominated by Gammarus zaddachi and the lesser water-boatman Sigara stagnalis with additional brackish water indicators including the amphipod Corophium volutator. -

CAR PARKING CHARGES FOR THE STATION, RICHMOND SWIMMING POOL AND GYM CUSTOMERS ARE ON THE WAY; HOWEVER, YOU CAN MAKE THEM FAIRER IF YOU ACT IMMEDIATELY BY EXPRESSING YOUR VIEWS Richmondshire District Council is proposing to introduce car parking charges in The Station Yard Car Park this spring. We understand that the ticket machines have been ordered . This car park is currently used by customers of The Station, Richmond Swimming Pool and Liberty Gym. All of these buildings and the activities which take place in them are organised and maintained through the efforts of two local volunteer-led charities: The Station – Is operated by The Richmondshire Building Preservation Trust The Pool and Gym – Are operated by the Richmond Leisure Trust If you regularly use these ‘much loved’ charity-run-facilities , and choose to park your vehicle in the council owned Station Yard Car Park, you will shortly be charged for your visit. The charities that operate these facilities believe that what is being proposed will have an immediate and detrimental impact on these community amenities which are run on a ‘not-for profit’ basis - and could ultimately force them to close. The local authority appear to have little or no relevant research on which to justify their position. Your help is needed NOW to ensure that the views of people like you, who value The Station, pool and gym, to make your voices heard on this critical issue by writing to or phoning your district councillor, if you live in Richmondshire or writing to the head of the local authority if you don't.
