BMC Evolutionary Biology 2014, 14:5 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/14/5 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access The utility of CAD in recovering Gondwanan vicariance events and the evolutionary history of Aciliini (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) Rasa Bukontaite1,2*, Kelly B Miller3 and Johannes Bergsten1 Abstract Background: Aciliini presently includes 69 species of medium-sized water beetles distributed on all continents except Antarctica. The pattern of distribution with several genera confined to different continents of the Southern Hemisphere raises the yet untested hypothesis of a Gondwana vicariance origin. The monophyly of Aciliini has been questioned with regard to Eretini, and there are competing hypotheses about the intergeneric relationship in the tribe. This study is the first comprehensive phylogenetic analysis focused on the tribe Aciliini and it is based on eight gene fragments. The aims of the present study are: 1) to test the monophyly of Aciliini and clarify the position of the tribe Eretini and to resolve the relationship among genera within Aciliini, 2) to calibrate the divergence times within Aciliini and test different biogeographical scenarios, and 3) to evaluate the utility of the gene CAD for phylogenetic analysis in Dytiscidae. Results: Our analyses confirm monophyly of Aciliini with Eretini as its sister group. Each of six genera which have multiple species are also supported as monophyletic. The origin of the tribe is firmly based in the Southern Hemisphere with the arrangement of Neotropical and Afrotropical taxa as the most basal clades suggesting a Gondwana vicariance origin. However, the uncertainty as to whether a fossil can be used as a stem-or crowngroup calibration point for Acilius influenced the result: as crowngroup calibration, the 95% HPD interval for the basal nodes included the geological age estimate for the Gondwana break-up, but as a stem group calibration the basal nodes were too young. -
Dytiscid Water Beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) of the Yukon
Dytiscid water beetles of the Yukon FRONTISPIECE. LARSON Department of Biology, Memorial University of Newfoundland St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada A1B 3X9 Abstract. One hundred and thirteen species of Dytiscidae (Coleoptera) are recorded from the Yukon Territory. The Yukon distribution, total geographical range and habitat of each of these species is described and multi-species patterns are summarized in tabular form. Several different range patterns are recognized with most species being Holarctic or transcontinental Nearctic boreal (73%) in lentic habitats. Other major range patterns are Arctic (20 species) and Cordilleran (12 species), while a few species are considered to have Grassland (7), Deciduous forest (2) or Southern (5) distributions. Sixteen species have a Beringian and glaciated western Nearctic distribution, i.e. the only Nearctic Wisconsinan refugial area encompassed by their present range is the Alaskan/Central Yukon refugium; 5 of these species are closely confined to this area while 11 have wide ranges that extend in the arctic and/or boreal zones east to Hudson Bay. Résumé. Les dytiques (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) du Yukon. Cent treize espèces de dytiques (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) sont connues au Yukon. Leur répartition au Yukon, leur répartition globale et leur habitat sont décrits et un tableau résume les regroupements d’espèces. La répartition permet de reconnaître plusieurs éléments: la majorité des espèces sont holarctiques ou transcontinentales-néarctiques-boréales (73%) dans des habitats lénitiques. Vingt espèces sont arctiques, 12 sont cordillériennes, alors qu’un petit nombre sont de la prairie herbeuse (7), ou de la forêt décidue (2), ou sont australes (5). -

Commissioned by Thames Water Utilities Limited Clearwater Court Vastern Road Reading RG1 8DB CROSSNESS SEWAGE TREATMENT WORKS NATURE RESERVE & SOUTHERN MARSH AQUATIC INVERTEBRATE SURVEY Report number: CPA18054 JULY 2019 Prepared by Colin Plant Associates (UK) Consultant Entomologists 30a Alexandra Rd London N8 0PP 1 1 INTRODUCTION, BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY 1.1 Introduction and background 1.1.1 On 30th May 2018 Colin Plant Associates (UK) were commissioned by Biodiversity Team Manager, Karen Sutton on behalf of Thames Water Utilities Ltd. to undertake aquatic invertebrate sampling at Crossness Sewage Treatment Works on Erith Marshes, Kent. This survey was to mirror the locations and methodology of a previous survey undertaken during autumn 2016 and spring 2017. Colin Plant Associates also undertook the aquatic invertebrate sampling of this previous survey. 1.1.2 The 2016-17 aquatic survey was commissioned with the primary objective of establishing a baseline aquatic invertebrate species inventory and to determine the quality of the aquatic habitats present across both the Nature Reserve and Southern Marsh areas of the Crossness Sewage Treatment Works. The surveyors were asked to sample at twenty-four, pre-selected sample station locations, twelve in each area. Aquatic Coleoptera and Heteroptera (beetles and true bugs) were selected as target groups. A report of the previous survey was submitted in Sept 2017 (Plant 2017). 1.1.3 During December 2017 a large-scale pollution event took place and untreated sewage escaped into a section of the Crossness Nature Reserve. The primary point of egress was Nature Reserve Sample Station 1 (NR1) though because of the connectivity of much of the waterbody network on the marsh other areas were affected. -

During a short collecting trip to Montenegro in 2014, 26 locations were sampled and 692 specimens belonging to 45 species of water beetles were collected. The following species are recorded for the first time from Montenegro: Haliplus dal- matinus J. Müller, 1900, Haliplus heydeni Wehncke, 1875, Haliplus laminatus (Schaller, 1783), Hydroporus erythrocephalus (Linnaeus, 1758), Hyphydrus anatolicus (Guignot, 1957), Melanodytes pustulatus (Rossi, 1792) and Rhantus bistriatus (Bergsträsser, 1778). The addition of these seven species brings the total of Hydradephaga known from Montenegro to 91 species. The new records are presented and an updated checklist of the Hydradephaga of Montenegro is given. ŠġASTNÝ Abstract: Hydroporus glasunovi glasunovi ZAITZEV 1905 and Hydroporus glasunovi dolini nov.ssp. are members of the planus-group of Hydroporus CLAIRVILLE 1806. They are distributed in the mountainous regions of Central Asia and north- western China. The nominotypical subspecies is re-described and the new subspecies treated in a differential diagnosis. The male and female genitalia as well as the habitus of both subspecies are illustrated. Lectotypes are designated for Hydroporus glasunovi ZAITZEV 1905, and Hydroporus macrocephalus GSCHWENDTNER 1923. The zoogeographic characteristics of the mountain areas in Central Asia are discussed and some notes on the biology of both subspecies are given. Introduction In 1991 the junior author collected in Tajikistan (Fan Mountains, Lake Kulikalon) a series of Hydroporus provisionally identified as H. glasunovi ZAITZEV 1905. More or less at the same time, the Vienna Museum (NMW) acquired material which was col- lected by V.G. Dolin in Central Asia and which also was at first identified as that spe- cies. But serious doubts remained about the identity of all these specimens. This was due to the inadequate description and the lack of any illustrations in the original work (ZAITZEV 1905: 26), and, additionally, to the different ways in which the species was treated after Zaitzev by several authors. -

Stjepan Krčmar U ovom radu je istražen kvalitativni sastav entomof aune na četiri močvarna staništa od me đunarodnog značenja u Republici Hrvatskoj. To su Park prirode Kopački rit, Park prirode Lonjsko polje, Delta rijeke Neretve i Crna Mlaka. Glavni cilj specijalističkog rada je objediniti sve objavljene i neobjavljene podatke o nalazima vrsta kukaca na ova četiri močvarna staništa te kvalitativno usporediti entomofau nu pomoću Sörensonovog indexa faunističke sličnosti. Na području Parka prirode Kopački rit utvrđeno je ukupno 866 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 84 porodice i 513 rodova. Na području Parka prirode Lonjsko polje utvrđeno je 513 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 24 porodice i 89 rodova. Na području delte rijeke Neretve utvrđeno je ukupno 348 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 89 porodica i 227 rodova. Za područje Crne Mlake nije bilo dostupne literature o nalazima kukaca. Velika vrijednost Sörensonovog indexa od 80,85% ukazuje na veliku faunističku sličnost između faune obada Kopačkoga rita i Lonjskoga polja. Najmanja sličnost u fauni obada utvrđena je između močvarnih staništa Lonjskog polja i delte rijeke Neretve, a iznosi 41,37%. -

In the contri- bution the list of species from appendices of Habitat directive occuring in Slovenia is revised. The revision listed 20 species for Slovenia belonging to 13 families: Rhysodidae, Carabidae, Dytiscidae, Leiodidae, Elateridae, Buprestidae, Cerambycidae, Lucanidae, Bolboceratidae, Scarabaeidae, Cucujidae, Meleandrydae and Bostrichidae. In the paper the proposal of Slovenian nomenclature, the overview of species biology and ecology and current knowledge over species status and occur- rence in Slovenia is given. According to recent studies the overview of methods for species detection and sampling is provided. -
The Water Beetles of Miller Blue Hole, Sandusky County, Ohio (Insecta: Coleoptera)1-2
THE WATER BEETLES OF MILLER BLUE HOLE, SANDUSKY COUNTY, OHIO (INSECTA: COLEOPTERA)1-2 BRIAN E. MELIN AND ROBERT C. GRAVES Department of Biology, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 43408 ABSTRACT Thirty-one species of aquatic beetles, representing the families Dytiscidae, Hydro- philidae, Haliplidae, and Gyrinidae, were collected in the Miller Blue Hole, a large spring, between October 21, 1967, and January 27, 1969. The numbers of each species collected are tabulated by monthly intervals. Some of the species present in this unusual habitat are rare; Tropisternus columbianus is apparently recorded from Ohio for the first time. INTRODUCTION The Ohio "blue holes" are the outlets of an extensive underground drainage system occurring in limestone bedrock. They may best be thought of as gigantic springs reaching the surface as deep, conical pools or ponds which are drained by streams flowing into Lake Erie. There are several "blue holes" located in San- dusky and Erie counties, the best known being the Castalia Blue Hole, which has been "developed" as a commercial tourist attraction, with the result that its original natural environment has been destroyed. Closely adjacent to this one is the biggest of the "blue holes," the large spring-fed lake in the center of the town of Castalia. The Miller Blue Hole, six miles to the west of this town, is nearly two acres in size, and has been preserved by the state since 1932 in a relatively natural condi- tion. It is located in a 13-acre wooded tract surrounded by agricultural lands. Earlier works dealing with Miller Blue Hole have only briefly mentioned water beetles.
