Tehran Tehran Tehran The capital of Persia since 1789, Tehran has grown from a dusty backwater to a teeming metropolis of 800,000. In the last decade alone, Tehran has added 300,000 residents, many displaced by the earthquakes, monster attacks, and other consequences of the Serpentfall. And some of these new residents are here to play the secret game that Britain and Russia have played here–much to the distaste of Persians of all stripes–since the 19th century. But now the game is in new innings; played with a savage intensity here because Persia is almost the only court left for it. The Serpent Curtain lies across Europe, an impenetrable barrier. Turkey is surrounded by Soviet clients and conquests–and by suspicious Soviet guards. Central Asia and China are remote, plagued by warlords and bitter cold. But Persia borders Soviet territory directly, a border that moved much closer to Tehran after the Soviets annexed Persian Azerbaijan in 1946. Less than 200 miles from the expanded Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, Tehran has become Tbilisia veritable nest of spies. It draws those who would try to smuggle agents into the Soviet empire, and information out…and it draws those who would move the Soviet border yet again, all the way out to the PersianBaku Gulf and the doorstep of India.Tashkent T Stalinabad SSR A Ashgabad SSR Zanjan Tehran A S KabulSAADABAD NIAVARAN Damascus Baghdad P Evin TAJRISH Prison Red Air Force Isfahan Station SHEMIRAN I Telephone Jerusalem Abadan Exchange GHOLHAK British Mission and Cemetery R S Sample file P’ A Karachi S t Demavend J oun To M R Doshan Tappan MuscatTo Kand Airport Mehrabad Jiddah To Zanjan (Soviet Border) Aerodrome BombayTEHRAN N O DULAB Gondar A A Aden S Qul’eh Gabri Parthian Ruins SHAHRA RAYY Medieval Ruins To Garm Sar Salt Desert To Hamadan To Qom To Kavir 4 Tehran Tehran THE CHARACTER OF TEHRAN Tehran sits–and increasingly, sprawls–on the southern slopes of the Elburz Mountains, specifically Mount Demavend, an extinct volcano that towers 18,000 feet above sea level. -

The study stresses the contrast between Tehran and the rest of Iran, a result of the concentration of development within, the capital city, and also the contrasting patterns within the city itself, the result of rapid expansion. The first threie chapters are an attempt to consider the various processes that have contributed to the dev/elopmenit of T.ehran, which was arbitrarily chosen as capital less than two hundred years ago. -

The religious fervour of these crimes makes them ever more shocking: for instance, a woman’s rape was frequently the last act that preceded her execution in Iran, as under the “Sharia” law guidelines, the execution of a virgin fe- male is non-permissible. This process culminated with Khomeini’s “Fatwa” (Islamic De- cree), in July 1988, whereupon the mass execution of Iran’s politi- cal prisoners was implemented and within two months, between August and September of that year, thousands of political prisoners were executed. They were asked a few questions by what became infamously known as the “Death Commission” and were later sen- tenced to death. There are no exact fi gures of the number of victims due to the sup- pressive political climate and severe censorship in Iran. -
Article an Annotated Checklist of Iranian Mesostigmata (Acari)
Persian Journal of Acarology, Vol. 2, No. 1, pp. 63–158. Article An annotated checklist of Iranian Mesostigmata (Acari), excluding the family Phytoseiidae Shahrooz Kazemi*& Asma Rajaei Department of Biodiversity, Institute of Science and High Technology and Environmental Sciences, Graduate University of Advanced Technology, Kerman, Iran; e-mails: [email protected]; [email protected] *Corresponding author Abstract The present checklist provides the results of a survey of collected and identified mesostigmatic mites in Iran (excluding the family Phytoseiidae) including 348 species belonging to 128 genera, 39 families, and 17 superfamilies of which one genus (Trachyuropoda Berlese, 1888) is a new record for Iranian mite fauna. It is annotated with some corrections to specific identities which have previously reported by Iranian literature and with known geographical and habitats distributions in Iran. Suborders Sejida and Trigynaspida comprise three and seven recorded species belonging to two and six genera, respectively, and Monogynaspida (except the Phytoseiidae) with 338 species belonging to 120 genera. No species of the cohorts Heatherellina and Heterozerconina has been recorded from Iran yet. Key words: Checklist, Acari, Mesostigmata, Monogynaspida, Trigynaspida, Sejida, Iran. Introduction The Mesostigmata is a large, diverse and cosmopolitan assemblage of parasitiform mites. Most of them are free-living predators, and many species are parasites or symbionts of mammals, birds, reptiles, or arthropods (Walter & Proctor 1999). Lindquist et al. (2009) divided the order into three suborders (Monogynaspida, Trigynaspida and Sejida). There are about 12000 species belonging to approximately 70 families which grouped into 26 superfamilies (Walter & Proctor 1999; Lindquist et al. 2009). Iran is the 18th largest country in the world with an aera of 1,648,195 km2. -
