Winnipeg Folk Festival Announces 2013 Line-Up Five Days of Folk Kicks Off with City and Colour, the Avett Brothers and Oh My Darling FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 16, 2013 Subject to change/additional artists may be announced Winnipeg Folk Festival Announces 2013 Line-Up Five Days of Folk Kicks Off with City and Colour, The Avett Brothers and Oh My Darling WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Canada – The 40th edition of the Winnipeg Folk Festival takes place Wednesday, July 10 to Sunday, July 14 and the line-up, once again, brings together a diversity of world-class music for what will be a celebratory and memorable event filled with fun, friends and musical discovery. The five-day Festival kicks off with one of Canada’s most renowned, multi-award winning acts City and Colour, Grammy-nominated North Carolina band The Avett Brothers and Winnipeg’s own bluegrass/folk globetrotters Oh My Darling. The Avett Brothers and City and Colour have been appearing together throughout Canada and the US – and it’s been a recipe for success as they have gone on to sell out notable venues including the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto and the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. The Festival continues on Thursday, July 11, with a rare first time performance by The Decemberists frontman and songwriter, Colin Meloy. Also on the bill is multi-Juno nominated, Ontario singer- songwriter and Festival alumnus Serena Ryder, and the Atlanta-based folk rock duo the Indigo Girls are returning to the Festival after a six-year hiatus. Friday sees the return of Australian fan-favourite The Cat Empire. Montreal-based and “sci-fi folk” troubadour Patrick Watson will bring songs from his latest album Adventures In Your Own Backyard to Main Stage. Danny Michel and The Garifuna Collective will bring the sounds of Belize to the Festival for the first time and Nathan Rogers will celebrate the legacy of his father Stan Rogers with what is sure to be a memorable performance: Nathan Sings Stan: The Rogers Legacy Continues. Saturday night features a nod to the music of New Orleans with a performance by 2013 Grammy Award-winning blues group Dr. John & The Nite Trippers and psychedelic funk giants Galactic who will close the night. We will also see the much-awaited return of Martin Sexton – a standout singer- songwriter from past Festivals. On Sunday we’ll see the return of the quintessential all-star Texas troubadours The Flatlanders (featuring Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Butch Hancock), gospel pioneers The Blind Boys Of Alabama and our favourite didgeri-dude Xavier Rudd will close the Festival on Sunday evening. To honour and celebrate the 40th edition of the Winnipeg Folk Festival a number of performers from the first Festival in 1974 have been invited to perform and share their memories and stories. The Winnipeg Folk Festival is thrilled to welcome back Stringband, Leon Redbone, Bob King, Sylvia Tyson and Ken Whiteley. 1 Winnipeg Folk Festival • 203-211 Bannatyne Avenue •Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada • R3B 3P2 tel 204-231-0096 • fax 204 231 0076 • [email protected] • www.winnipegfolkfestival.ca The Festival will showcase several international acts this year including: Niyaz (Iran), Bombino (Mali), Los Vega (Mexico), The Cat Empire (Australia), Habadekuk (Denmark), Aurelio & The Garifuna Soul Band (Honduras), The Garifuna Collective (Belize), The Alan Kelly Gang (Ireland), Tinpan Orange (Australia), The Dunwells (England), and Xavier Rudd (Australia). Chris Frayer, the Winnipeg Folk Festival's Artistic Director, is thrilled with this year’s Festival line-up, “I’m proud of the way the 2013 line-up celebrates folk music with artists that span generations and genres. Our audience will get re-acquainted with artists from the 1974 Festival and performers with a strong sense of tradition, and they will discover many exciting artists who are leading the new folk music revival of the twenty-first century.” Additional information about daytime workshops, concerts, the Family Area and Big Blue @ Night will be released at the end of April. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE APRIL 2014 OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW ANNOUNCE JULY 1ST RELEASE OF REMEDY VIA ATO RECORDS BAND ANNOUNCES BIGGEST HEADLINING TOUR TO DATE “SWEET AMARILLO”, FIRST SINGLE, OUT NOW + ALBUM AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER Nashville, TN – Heavily celebrated Grammy Award winning band Old Crow Medicine Show has announced their upcoming new album Remedy, due out July 1 via ATO Records. Remedy is full of catchy melodies, quirky and often humorous lyrics, all executed with mesmerizing musicianship. Ten years after the massive success of folk anthem “Wagon Wheel”, which started as a track on a Bob Dylan work tape later finished by fiddler/band leader Ketch Secor, Remedy features a new Dylan/Old Crow penned collaboration on the new track “Sweet Amarillo” one of the album’s many highlights. Remedy also features the return of producer Ted Hutt (Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, Gaslight Anthem), who produced 2012’s highly praised Carry Me Back. Long before the resurgence of folk and roots rock, Old Crow Medicine Show was performing their fiery style of amped up old-time music, cultivating a diverse fan base who thrive on the band’s energetic performances. The songs on Remedy are chock full of the same raw energy, swagger and drive that has made rabid fans of everyone from hipsters to college students to traditional music purists. “This is country music for people who think country music needs a whoopin'’ says Secor, who adds, “Country music that knows how deep its roots run--- from the dirtiest blues to the folkiest folk, the songwriters, the crooners and the Outlaws, to the Opry stage; it's all here”.

1463f Magazine.qxp 10/23/08 1:56 PM Page 4 A WORD FROM THE P RESIDENT ell – the summer has come and gone, and with a flurry. CIP members have been active, Wand the CIP family has grown. In July, CIP experienced the most robust election for President-Elect that we have had in over a decade. Four candidates ran for the position with Marni Cappe becoming our new VP and President-Elect. Congratulations and welcome to Marni as the newest member of CIP Council, and many thanks to Linda McFadyen, Ron Glenn and Dennis Jacobs. I think it is a testament to the strength of this organization that we have such qualified and respected people taking the time to run for elected office. We knew that only one candidate would win, but I truly believe that CIP members are richer for the process. I have had the pleasure of getting to know Marni over the past number of years and admire the tremendous commitment she has shown to CIP.From her work with the Ontario Professional Planning Institute and through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the national association has been an important factor in Marni’s conscience. It is fortunate that Marni has joined Council at this time as CIP becomes more active in policy development. Marni’s addition to the current Council should make for a very productive year through to the CIP/OPPI Conference in September 2009. On the topic of conferences, I would like to congratulate Ian Wight and Chris Leach and their team for hosting the 2008 CIP/MPPI Conference. We had 700 delegates attend the conference and from all accounts have had nothing but accolades.
