During his almost 40-year career as a DJ on the BBC’s Radio One and Radio Four, he not only introduced innovative music—including psychedelia, reggae, punk, hip hop, grunge and electronica—into the British mainstream, but championed hundreds of musicians whose work might otherwise have gone unnoticed. Using Peel as a case study, this research focuses on the role his persona played in three distinct aspects of his success: (1) his ability to attract audiences across several generations; (2) his longevity at the BBC, a bastion of conservative bureaucracy; and (3) his impact on the programming on BBC’s Radio One and on British popular music in general. Drawing on the theories of persona developed by Horton and Wohl (1956) and Goffman (1971, 1981), the study offers a rhetorical analysis of Peel’s broadcast talk to explicate the role of persona in his success. By creating a persona based on selection, omission and emphasis of contradictory traits, Peel presented himself as an Everyman able to pull listeners onto his public platform while placing himself simultaneously in their worlds. Far from the artificial and static persona conceptualized by Horton and Wohl (1956), Peel’s on-air persona was paradoxical and flexible—traits that enhanced his credibility and help explain his unprecedented tenure as a DJ on Radio One and appeal as the host and writer for a talk program on Radio Four. As a radio personality, John Peel holds a unique place in British broadcasting history. His death in October 2004 was a front-page story in the national print press in the United Kingdom, as well as on radio and television. The extent of the attention his death received in the press as well as on radio and television was unprecedented for someone in his position (Long, 2006). The significance of this event stretched far beyond the relatively narrow confines of his 40-year career as a DJ on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). Indeed, one writer compared media reaction to Peel’s death to that of John Lennon, Freddie Mercury and George Harrison (Inglis 2005: 407). Even Prime Minister Tony Blair, who publicly declared himself “genuinely saddened by the news” and referred to Peel as a “genuine one-off,” acknowledged the passing of a British icon (Lawson, 2004). Peel was also lionized in the popular music press in articles exemplified by a front-page story in the weekly New Musical Express (NME), which carried a banner headline hailing him as a “Hero. Legend. Good Bloke” (November 6, 2005). In 1994, the same paper had awarded him its “Godlike Genius” prize in 1 recognition of his role as an arbiter of taste in popular music in the United Kingdom. It was a tacit recognition of the symbiotic relationship between Peel and the music press. Whereas Peel gained credibility and authenticity, particularly early in his career, from the attention he received from popular music publications, the role of the music press as arbiters of taste was also substantiated by Peel’s regular references to their opinions on his radio programs. Outside the United Kingdom the news of Peel’s passing evoked a similar response, as listeners from around the world expressed their grief in thousands of messages posted on the BBC’s website.

Some thoughts on how the radio voice anchors, contains and sometimes pierces (pre-print version; published in The Radio Journal, vol.11, no.1, April 2013, pp.59-73) Abstract This article argues that while psychoanalytic theory has been valuably employed by television, film and cultural studies, there has been no comparable 'psychoanalytic turn' in radio studies. It suggests that the concept of 'containment', as developed variously by Wilfred Bion and Esther Bick, might go some way to explain the powerful role that the voice of the radio presenter can play in the regular listener's internal world, with the capacity both to 'hold' the listener together, and to transform overwhelming fears into more manageable feelings. It argues that the disembodied radio voice does this partly because it recalls the prenatal power of the maternal voice, and partly through the temporal order that regular radio voices impose on the internal and external world. Both Second World War British radio catchphrases and Roosevelt's Fireside Chats are discussed in relation to their containment function. The article also explores the radio as a transitional space, as defined by Donald Winnicott, through which it can constitute listeners into an 'imagined community'.     Rock and Roll has Tender Moments too... ! Photographs by Chalkie Davies 1973-1988 ! For as long as I can remember people have suggested that I write a book, citing both my exploits in Rock and Roll from 1973-1988 and my story telling abilities. After all, with my position as staff photographer on the NME and later The Face and Arena, I collected pop stars like others collected stamps, I was not happy until I had photographed everyone who interested me. However, given that the access I had to my friends and clients was often unlimited and 24/7 I did not feel it was fair to them that I should write it all down. I refused all offers. Then in 2010 I was approached by the National Museum of Wales, they wanted to put on a retrospective of my work, this gave me a special opportunity. In 1988 I gave up Rock and Roll, I no longer enjoyed the music and, quite simply, too many of my friends had died, I feared I might be next. So I put all of my negatives into storage at a friends Studio and decided that maybe 25 years later the images you see here might be of some cultural significance, that they might be seen as more than just pictures of Rock Stars, Pop Bands and Punks. That they even might be worthy of a Museum. So when the Museum approached me three years ago with the idea of a large six month Retrospective in 2015 I agreed, and thought of doing the usual thing and making a Catalogue.

Radio with Pictures: Radio Visualisation in BBC National Radio Richard Berry University of Sunderland Abstract. Radio has always had pictures. The ones the listener created in their own minds and this is, most of us agree, one of the medium's greatest strengths. However, radio is increasingly consumed on a digital platform (such as DAB Radio, Digital TV, a mobile device or a computer) on devices with screens, rather than a dial. This creates a problem for radio because when we look at the device we are listening to we see a screen that often lacks rich content. The process of Radio Visualisation is about filling this space. This papers focus, though, is the other ways in which radio is visualising itself online in a process that deploys transmedia storytelling techniques that build relationships with the audience, builds brands and helps broadcasters to tell stories in ways never before possible. In the spring of 2011 2.84 million British TV viewers watched a radio programme on their Televisions. They were tuning in via interactive television (or the 'red button') services to watch the BBC Radio One breakfast presenter Chris Moyles attempt to break a world record for the longest radio programme. The BBC installed a series of fixed cameras in the programme’s regular studio at the BBC's Yalding House studios, with added 'roving' cameras to allow the presenters to broadcast from other parts of the building and a cafe across the street.
