Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue EARTH TONES Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, BRUSHES A good "round" watercolor brush. Large: #10, #12. Medium #6, #8. Smaller #1, #2, #4 can be useful for detail work. FLAT brushes (1 inch, 3/4 inch, 1/2 inch) are useful for obtaining clean edges and strong stroke work. NOTE: Mops, Hakes, and Skywash brushes are good for covering large areas in your paintings quickly and efficiently with a lot of paint. PAPER It should be no less than 140 lb. Desktop sizes seem to be most efficient (9" x 12", 12” x 16”, 14” x 20”) but feel free to paint in whatever size suits your interest. Try to steer clear of tiny pads as they will force you to paint in tiny, "dabby" strokes. BEGINNER LIST You will be able to add as your skill, style and preference develops. We will talk more about materials as the class moves forward. Please, ask questions if you are unsure.. Opaque Colors
When glazing, it helps to know which colors are transparent and which are opaque. Whether a particular color is transparent or opaque has to do simply with its inherent chemical makeup. An opaque color will offer more coverage than a transparent one; that much is obvious. But it is important to remember that opacity and transparency have nothing to do with color saturation/intensity or color permanence. Both groups contain fugitive colors as well as powerful ones (red can fade quickly in UV light; blue used in even small quantities will turn the mixture strongly blue). This list is provided to help you determine which colors are best used for underpainting, which are best for glazing right out of the tube, and which may require the use of a glazing medium. SUPPLY LIST FOR WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP STUDENTS a 12 x 16 piece of Gatorbord, plexiglass, or marlite (temboard with a smooth white finish on one side) to use as a waterproof painting support an assortment of watercolor brushes: rounds size 4, 8, 12 and flats 1”, 1.5” a failed watercolor painting you can tear in pieces an assortment of tube watercolors: Aureolin yellow, Permanent Rose, Cobalt Blue and any others you like to use. I have comprehensive materials list that includes a long list of excellent pigments. I favor Daniel Smith pigments, but Winsor Newton is also excellent. Other excellent quality watercolors are DaVinci, Grumbacher. Stephen Quiller, Holbein, and American Journey (Cheap Joe’s). A bag of texturing materials such as Saran wrap, cellophane, cheesecloth, pieces of lace, gridded items such as pieces of rug hooking mesh, sink mats, plastic needlepoint mesh, pieces of screening, rickrack, plastic stencils, smaller bubble wrap, anything flat that can be placed in a wet wash! – YAA will put together a few things for you to use, but feel free to bring your own! Your sketchbook and/or a variety of clippings and photographs of subject matter that excites you. My recommendations for watercolor tube pigments: You do NOT need all of these, but my recommendations follow. The Paints, Past and Present Details and Descriptions of Colours This section gives assessments for certain determinable characteristics of all the colours presently in my range, as well as a few informal remarks on their qualities and idiosynchrasies when used. Following the pattern already laid out on all my tube and can labels, and on my more recent colour charts, I give: (1) The Colour Index Number: This is an international system for classifying and identifying pigments solely by their (often very complex) chemical formulae( e.g P(igment) R(ed) 106, Mercuric Sulphide known as Genuine Vermilion). The use of vague traditional or invented colour names is thus clariﬁ ed, and so, in theory at least, is the vexed matter of what pigments manufacturers actually put into their paints. Assuming, that is, the colourman is honest…I can certainly state that there are no secret additions to any of the paints in my range. What you read as the C.I number on the label is what you get. (2) Estimated Relative Drying Speed: Bearing in mind that all drying speeds will be affected by temperature, humidity and light levels, these give a broad calibration of comparative speeds, from the Very Fast, such as the Umbers, many of which, if used neat, will be touch dry within a hot summer day, to the Very Slow, which in unmixed state, might take up to a week.
