RED DRAGONS FOOTBALL NJAC Title and Lambert Award Among 2008 Season Highlights Cortland Enjoyed One of the Best Seasons in School History During the 2008 Campaign 2009 Team Guide Red dRaGONS FOOTBaLL NJAC Title and Lambert Award Among 2008 Season Highlights Cortland enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history during the 2008 campaign. The Red Dragons finished 11-2, including two victories in the NCAA Division III tournament before losing at eventual national champion Mount Union in the quarterfinals. Cortland also won the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) title with a 9-0 record. The program has finished at least tied for first in the NJAC standings each of the last four years and is a combined 26-3 versus league foes during that span. Following the season, Cortland received the Lambert Meadowlands Award as the best Division III team in the East and was chosen as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Team of the Year. Head Coach dan macNeill was voted as the NJAC Coach of the Year and was one of five finalists for Liberty Mutual Division III National Coach of the Year honors. Eric Hajnos tied a school single-season record with nine TD receptions, including two scoring catches in an NCAA second round win versus Curry.     CORTLAND FOOTBALL 2019 TEam Guide Red Dragons Empire 8 Runner-up, Postseason Qualifier in 2018 Cortland placed second in the Empire 8 with a 5-2 league record and finished 7-3 overall during the 2018 season. The Red Dragons’ three losses were by only a combined 13 points. Cortland earned its 23rd postseason berth as the Empire 8’s qualifier for the New York Bowl, but was denied a chance to successfully defend its crown as the game was canceled due to the lack of a declared opponent from the Liberty League. Cortland set school records for scoring average (39.3 points per game) and passing yardage average (295.9 yards per game), while quarterback Brett Segala set a school regular-season mark with 2,671 passing yards. Jake Smith earned D3football.com All-America and All-East honors on special teams (two blocked kicks) and Cole Burgess was an All-East kick returner (28.7 yards per kickoff return, two touchdowns). Nick Mongelli was named the Empire 8 Special Teams Player of the Year after making 8-of-9 field goals along with a school regular-season record 47 PAT kicks. Smith (at wide receiver), Mongelli, Burgess and defensive lineman Dan Appley were all first team All-Empire 8 honorees.     RED DRAGONS FootBALL 2011 TEam Guide Cortland Earns NJAC Crown, NCAA Berth and Cortaca Win in 2010 The SUNY Cortland football team finished the 2010 season with a 10-2 record. The team shared the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) title, earned the league’s NCAA Division III playoff automatic berth and advanced to the second round of the national tournament. The Red Dragons won at least 10 games for the second time in three years. Cortland showed off a flair for the dramatic when it mattered most. Facing a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit and elimination from the NJAC playoff race at home versus Montclair State University, the Red Dragons scored the final 10 points and sweated out a last-second missed field goal by the guests for a 10-9 victory. Two weeks later, Cortland again had fans on the edge of their seats. Trailing 17-3 to rival Ithaca College in the annual Cortaca Jug game in front of more than 10,000 fans at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex, the Red Dragons rallied for a 20-17 victory behind sophomore tailback Justin Autera’s 232 rushing yards – a Cortaca Jug record. Cortland earned its second NCAA berth in three seasons and opened the postseason by defeating Endicott College, 49-35, at home in the first round. In the second round against visiting Alfred University, the Red Dragons fell behind 20-3 early in the third quarter. Cortland twice clawed back to within seven points before losing 34-20 to finish tied for ninth nationally. Autera, senior defensive lineman Lou Crispo, junior offensive Cody Allen led the Red Dragons with 105 total tackles, including nine or more lineman Billy Castro and senior cornerback Joe Lopez each stops in seven of 12 games.
