CORTLAND FOOTBALL 2019 TEam Guide Red Dragons Empire 8 Runner-up, Postseason Qualifier in 2018 Cortland placed second in the Empire 8 with a 5-2 league record and finished 7-3 overall during the 2018 season. The Red Dragons’ three losses were by only a combined 13 points. Cortland earned its 23rd postseason berth as the Empire 8’s qualifier for the New York Bowl, but was denied a chance to successfully defend its crown as the game was canceled due to the lack of a declared opponent from the Liberty League. Cortland set school records for scoring average (39.3 points per game) and passing yardage average (295.9 yards per game), while quarterback Brett Segala set a school regular-season mark with 2,671 passing yards. Jake Smith earned D3football.com All-America and All-East honors on special teams (two blocked kicks) and Cole Burgess was an All-East kick returner (28.7 yards per kickoff return, two touchdowns). Nick Mongelli was named the Empire 8 Special Teams Player of the Year after making 8-of-9 field goals along with a school regular-season record 47 PAT kicks. Smith (at wide receiver), Mongelli, Burgess and defensive lineman Dan Appley were all first team All-Empire 8 honorees. 2009 Team Guide Red dRaGONS FOOTBaLL NJAC Title and Lambert Award Among 2008 Season Highlights Cortland enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history during the 2008 campaign. The Red Dragons finished 11-2, including two victories in the NCAA Division III tournament before losing at eventual national champion Mount Union in the quarterfinals. Cortland also won the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) title with a 9-0 record. The program has finished at least tied for first in the NJAC standings each of the last four years and is a combined 26-3 versus league foes during that span. Following the season, Cortland received the Lambert Meadowlands Award as the best Division III team in the East and was chosen as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Team of the Year. CORTLAND football 2016 TEam Guide Empire 8 Crown, NCAA Second Round for Red Dragons in 2015 Cortland’s first season as a member of the Empire 8 conference was one to remember. The Red Dragons won a share of the league title and earned the conference’s NCAA tournament automatic berth for the program’s 20th postseason appearance, including nine NCAA showings. Cortland opened the season with a thrilling 26-24 non-league win over Heidelberg University on a Steven Ferreira to Jon Mannix “Hail Mary” TD pass on the game’s final play. The Red Dragons finished the regular season with an 8-2 record, including a 6-2 league mark. Cortland clinched the Empire 8 title with an 11-8 win at Ithaca College – its sixth straight win over the Bombers in the annual Cortaca Jug rivalry series. The Red Dragons opened NCAA play with a convincing 45-21 home win over New Jersey Athletic Conference champion Salisbury University.
