Bond-Williams ripostes against Liu in the L64 Bond-Williams wins the fight 15-14 Women’sSabre Senior World Cup

Bond-Williams enjoyed abetter time in the poules than Nicoll, emerging as 18th seed after six victories from six fights, whereas Nicoll’sranking for the start of DE was 49th after four wins.

This wasatough event, with virtually all the world’sbest fencers present, led by top dog Zagunis and young pretender Kharlan. Both were below par on the day,but still impressive, although Zagunis consistently allowed opponents asmall lead at the start of her fights.Areprise of the 2010 world championship final wasonthe cards,as both progressed though the field. UnlikeParis though, when Zagunis restricted all but one opponent to single- figure scores, this time all but one took her to double figures.

Thehoped-for encounter failed to materialise.Zagunis succumbed to Marzocca but retained her world No.1 slot. Kharlan edged out Russia’sSophia Velikaia 15-14 in the semi-finals and went on to aclean victory over Marzocca for gold. Three of the four London medallists occupy the top three world ranking slots, with Zagunis and Kharlan clear of the field with just 44 points separating them.

Eleven nations entered the team competition on the last of what is now athree-day event. China won gold with a 45-36 win over Russia. Forbronze, just beat Italy 45-44. Poland looked to have the match all wrapped up as they dominated most of the way, but Italy came back strongly in the latter stages, threatening to upset what Nicoll advances on Mariel Zagunis in the L16 seemed aforgone conclusion.

The SWORD 11 Medallists (from left) Marzocca, Kharlan, Zagunis and Velikaia

Thepreviously dominant USA team, now missing Sada Jacobsonwho has retired, Emily Jacobson who has dropped out and Rebecca Ward, settled for 7th position after losing to China 39-45. With team women’ssabre missing from the 2012 Olympic programme, there seems little incentive to fight for aplace against adominant compatriot. But the USA’s new intakewill aim for astrong return for Rio in 2016, doubtless with Zagunis still their No.1.

Britain’swomen lost out to Poland 36-45 in their first match, but then beat Iceland 45-18 and Mexico 45-28. Finally, they met and built up acommanding lead before snatching defeat from the jaws of victory and going down 39-45 to end 11th.

TheEngland Trophy wasthe first major BFAevent to benefit from the Beazley sponsorship, which allowed a significant upgrade in facilities and presentation. ■

He started fencing with the Four Sisters club in Suffolk and went on to become an AFAcoach, attending many courses at Lilleshall.Hecoached at the FE Ipswich Suffolk College and at RAF Bawdsey. One of his WRAF pupils,Maureen Watterson, won the inter-services women’sfoil championship in 1967, and later developed into atop rider and shooter.

DAVE BIRD 1943-2011

Dave Bird of Chelmsford &Anglia Ruskin University Fencing Club has died at the age of 68. He will be rememberedasacheerful, sociable and charming individual who wasone of those rare things these days –athoroughly nice bloke.

Dave wasakeen sabreur and member of the club for over 20 years.Heheld the post of treasurer for many of these years and wasavaluable member of the team that won the Eastern Region's Anita Balestrophy on four consecutive occasions. His prowess at the 10-pin bowling alley will be rememberedbyall those who competed in the club socials –especially his unplanned trip down the lane one year!

Fencing wasn’t Dave’sonly passion; he wasalso a keen rock climber, skier, photographer, cyclist and member of the Triumph Sports Car Owners Club.Itis, however, onthe fencing piste that his enthusiasm and infectious smile will be most remembered. We last saw him at our Christmas Dinner and it wasa measureofthe man that despite being in the advanced stages of cancer, hewas still determined to put on his dinner suit and join his fencing companions for, what wastobe, the last time.

Dave is survived by his wife Sylvie and daughters Adele and Jacqui. Trevor Richards

FROM THE CHAIR Over the past year,British Fencing has gone through asignificant number of changes.Spurred on by the results of aUKSport/Sport England governance audit at the beginning of 2010, the Board has sought to bring our sport into line with the best practices of the most successful national governing bodies for Olympic sports in the UK. Duringthat time we have re-aligned our internationaland weapons committees, brought committee oversight to other parts of the organisation and encouraged greater participation of our membership in seeking to add new experience and abilities to that of those who continue to makeour sport happen, both at the grassroots level and on the international stage. This process has brought challenges, but also opportunitiestomakeBritish Fencing abetter and more responsive organisation. Our Chief Executive,Piers Martin, and his excellent staff have taken us well down the path of making us aprofessionally run and properly serviced organisation. When we made our governance changes in 2010, this meant that the role of President and Board Chair had to be separated and this wasratified at our AGMinAugust 2010. At that time,Itook on the role of Chair where Ihave continued to serve along with my Board oversight responsibilities for David Teasdale communication and marketing. During this period we have added two major corporate sponsors to our fencing family,Lloyd &Partners and Beazley. These partners have provided funding that will takeusto2016 and hopefully beyond, with the ability to provide better funding and support for our athletes and our development programmes.Soon, we hope to announce anew initiative –sponsor and donor funded –that will create afencing foundationtohelp parents who sometimes struggle to manage the costs associated with competition expenses. This funding has alsohelped us raise our game in terms of the types of international competitions we put on, the most recent example being the women’ssabre World Cup,which our internationalpartners found very impressive.Asweprepare to host the European Championships in Sheffield in July, this becomes vital as astep towards asuccessful Olympic Games in 2012. Our President, Keith Smith, has carried on with his role of leading our international presence and, along with Peter Jacobs,Steve Higginson, Dr Clare Halsted and others, makes sure that our international influence remains at its most effective with the FIE, European Federation and beyond. There have also been difficult changes thatwehave had to face, most notably the restructuring of our World ClassPerformance programme, which has seen the departure of Performance Director Graham Watts and is now being guided by anew performance management group with invaluableassistance from UK Sport. In the coming weeks we look forward to the announcement of anew performance manager with an international sports background to makesure we meet our targets on the world stage, while ensuring that our future stars are given the support they need to reach the podium in years to come. As part of our governance reorganisation, we made akey decision to takeonanindependent Chair of the Board of British Fencing. It is my distinct pleasure to introduce the members of British Fencing to David Teasdale, who has agreed to takeonthe role effective 1st March 2011. Mr Teasdale may already be familiar to some in our organisation, as he has led our membership reorganisation drive over the past few months. David Teasdale has had asuccessful career in business, sport and government and brings awealth of experience to our organisation. He currently serves as Board Chair for Business in Sport &Leisure and the Institute of Groundsmanship, and has the gravitas, leadership skills and affability to guide us through the challenges we face as an organisation. As Istep down from the post of Chair, itiswith the knowledge that, while we faced anumber of difficult challenges and difficulties as aBoard and an organisation during this period, we weathered those challenges and moved forward. Progress wasmade, and I am confident that progress will continue. Icontinue now with responsibilities as aBoard member and encourage you all to welcome and support our new chair,David Teasdale. Neal Mallett

Reigning men’sepee champion Neal Mallett emerged from the poules as No.2seed and glided through the DE to the semi-finals where he despatched the always difficultRobin Davenport with clinical precision 10-2. In the other half of the draw,Andrew Brown produced his best form, coming from 29th seed to eliminate 4th seed Graham Paul 10-7 and then Bill Osbaldeston10-4 before narrowly losing to Anton Pollard 9-10. In the semi-final Pollard claimed the scalp of newcomer and No.1seed George Liston.

Pollard found himself involved in two scrupulously correct Kate Smith decisions by different referees, but which struck many watching as unnecessarily officious and contrary to the spirit of veterans fencing. In the first, Duncan Rowland awarded him ayellow card in the semi-final for adjusting his bodywire withoutasking permission. Thesecond incident saw the finalists start cautiously only to be called for passivity after one minute by Peter Huggins. This reduced the fencing time to 3minutes at the end of which each had scored one hit. With priority to Mallett, Pollard had to force the pace and in aclash following his fleche attack one light appeared, to Mallett –anunsatisfactory finish to what might have been an enthralling contest.

Women’sepee produced two tense semi-finals,inone of which Kate Morwell-Neave was4-1 up against Kate Smith when alate hit wasgiven against her.Clearly upset, she could score only one more hit as Smith stormed back to win 10-5. Theother semi saw reigning champion Jane Clayton keep adetermined Sue Hanney at bay, winning 9-6.

In the final Claytonmoved 8-5 ahead with 30 seconds left, only for Smith to stage another escape act and equalise with one second on the clock; she clinched the fight in extra time to collect her third title.
