By Abdel Nasser Al-Aslami Al-Seyassah Staff KUWAIT CITY, July 28: The Ministry of Awqaf and Is- lamic Affairs and the Public Authority for Disabled Affairs (PADA) have signed a joint cooperation protocol. The document was signed yesterday at the ministry’s headquarters in Al-Riqqa. The Awqaf Undersecretary Eng. Farid Emadi said the protocol is the culmination of the per- manent and continuous work between the ministry and the authority to serve people with disabilities. Emadi added the agreement “will help us in organizing joint work and providing the best services, especially that the Awqaf has a great interest in people with disabilities, which prompted it to establish centers that are equipped with everything the children of this category need, and provide them with the ability to receive Islamic sciences in an easy manner, just like the people who are healthy. He indicated Awqaf will not be able to work alone, and therefore cooperation with the authority will contribute to achieving strategic goals and advancing work to the high- est levels, stressing that the agreement includes sharing the work between them, as Awqaf will provide teachers and Sharia curricula for these children, while the authority will provide special places for lessons. Director of the authority, Dr Shafi qa Al-Awadi, said the protocol of cooperation with Awqaf is very important to bring about equality between people with disabilities and healthy people in providing religious and legal lessons and lectures, not to mention the aspect of Umrah trips. Vehicle repair workshops eyed KUWAIT CITY, July 28: The National Fund for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Development announced the launch of a series of auctions, in cooperation with the Public Authority for Housing Welfare, to lease 3 plots of land to be used as vehicles maintenance and repair workshops for a period of 10 years, reports Al-Anba daily. The fund stipulated that the area of each land should not be less than 180 square meters in the West Abdullah Al- Mubarak project (Block 5), Saad Al-Abdullah City (Block 8) and Jaber Al-Ahmad City (Sector B, Block 1), stressing that these auctions are limited to owners of SMEs. Capitol attack hearing ‘Kill him’ & racial slurs amid angry testimony WASHINGTON, July 28, (AP): During emotional, tense and sometimes angry testimony, four police offi cers who defended the Capitol on Jan. 6 vividly recalled the vio- lence they endured while fi ghting against a mob of Donald Trump’s supporters. “I was grabbed, beaten, Tased, all while being called a traitor to my country,” said Metropolitan Police Offi cer Michael Fanone at the fi rst hearing Tuesday of the new House investigation into the insurrection. The Jan. 6 insurrection, an attempt to stop the certifi ca- tion of President Joe Biden’s win, came after then-Pres- ident Trump held a rally in Washington where he urged his followers to march on the Capitol and “fi ght like hell.” Yet despite extensive documentation of the violence, some Republicans have sought to deny and downplay the carnage that unfolded. In telling their stories, offi cers said they wanted to set the record straight about the “hell” they experienced. Here are highlights from the testi- mony of Fanone, fellow Metropolitan Police Offi cer Daniel Hodges, as well as Sgt. Aquilino Gonell and Offi cer Harry Dunn of the U.S. Capitol Po- lice:

Starbucks hits record sales in third quarter NEW YORK, July 28, (AP): Starbucks saw record sales in the third quarter as the impact of the pandemic receded and customers fl ocked to its stores. But the company’s shares fell after it lowered its forecast for sales growth in China, its second-largest market outside the U.S. The Seattle-based coffee giant said its revenue soared 78% to $7.5 billion in the April-June period, an all-time high. That beat Wall Street’s forecast of $7.3 billion, accord- ing to analysts polled by FactSet. Starbucks said its global same-store sales - or sales at lo- cations open at least a year - jumped 73% from the same period last year. Starbucks felt the brunt of the pandemic in the April-June period last year, when many stores were closed and same-store sales tumbled 40%. Same-store sales jumped 83% in the U.S. in the fi scal third quarter. Starbucks said rural and suburban traffi c, which led sales coming out of the pandemic, remained strong, but sales in urban markets also turned positive for the fi rst time since early 2020. Sales of higher-priced drinks - like cold brews and alter- native milk beverages - juiced sales, as did higher demand for food items. Starbucks said it’s also serving U.S. customers better with new store formats that prioritize drive-thru and mobile or- dering. Starbucks announced last year that it would close 400 stores and replace them with more convenient options, like small mobile pickup locations. Johnson said the com- pany is about 80% fi nished with that transformation, and he noted that drive-thru orders made up nearly half of U.S. or- ders in the third quarter. “The improvements we are making to our portfolio today will provide benefi ts for years to come,” Johnson said. But investors expressed concern with results in China, where same-store sales increased at a lower-than-expected pace of 19%. Starbucks also lowered its full-year sales fore- cast for China, saying it now expects growth of 18% to 20%, down from 27% to 32%. The company said it assumed travel restrictions would be lifted more quickly than they have been, and results last year were helped by coronavirus-related tax exemptions that have since been lifted. But Johnson forcefully defended the company’s perfor- mance, saying Starbucks will continue to see robust growth in China as it opens new stores. The company plans to open 600 stores in China in its 2021 fi scal year. “There should be no misunderstanding of how big and ro- bust our business in China is and will be,” he said. Starbucks reported net income of $1.15 billion for its fi s- cal third quarter. Adjusted for one-time items, the company earned a record $1.01 per share. That was well ahead of ana- lysts’ forecast of 78 cents. Based on the results, Starbucks updated its fi nancial guid- ance for the full year. The company said it now expects glob- al same-store sales growth of 20% to 21%, up from a range of 18% to 23%. It also expects adjusted earnings of $3.20 to $3.25 per share, up from $2.90 to $3.00. Cut emissions by 50pct Biden mileage rule to exceed ‘Obama goal’

WASHINGTON, July 28, (AP): In a major step against cli- mate change, President Joe Biden is proposing a return to ag- gressive Obama-era vehicle mileage standards over fi ve years. He’s then aiming for even tougher anti-pollution rules after that to forcefully reduce greenhouse gas emissions and nudge 40% of US drivers into electric vehicles by decade’s end. The proposed rules from the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation are expected to be released as early as next week, according to four industry and government offi cials who have been briefed on the plan. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because the standards haven’t been fi nalized. But administration offi cials have been discussing the numbers with the auto industry. Making good on Biden’s promise during the presidential campaign, the regulatory action would tighten tailpipe emissions standards rolled back under President Donald Trump. Acknowledging Biden’s goal of cut- ting US greenhouse gas emissions by at least half by 2030, the rules would begin with the 2023 car model year and start by applying California’s 2019 framework agreement on emissions standards reached between Ford, Volk- swagen, Honda, BMW and Volvo, ac- Biden cording to three of the offi cials. The California deal increases the mileage standard and cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 3.7% per year. Requirements ramp up in 2025 to Obama-era levels of a 5% annual increase in the mileage standard and a similar cut in emissions. They then go higher than that for model year 2026, Syringes loaded with Pfizer vaccine are ready to be used at an open COVID-19 vaccination site at the Rose E. ‘Unthinkable’ suspenseful Steinberg offers the tales behind ‘jokes’

By Molly Sprayregen nside Comedy’ by David Steinberg (Knopf) ‘I The legendary David Steinberg was one of the best-known comedians of the late ’60s and ’70s. His acclaimed stand-up career included 140 appear- ances on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,” four comedy albums and two Grammy nominations. He has directed episodes of “Friends,” “Mad About You,” “Seinfeld,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and more. And if can think of a famous comedian, Steinberg has probably worked with them. His new book, “Inside Comedy,” takes readers through the decades he has spent working with dozens of icons, including Lily Tomlin, Steve Martin, Chris Rock, and the late Robin Wil- liams. Through personal stories, Steinberg provides a back- stage pass to life in comedy. We are onstage with him and Williams.
