DERNOV Institute of Geological Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine е-mail: [email protected] * Corresponding author THREE NEW SPECIES OF NAUTILIDS (CEPHALOPODS) FROM THE CARBONIFEROUS OF THE DONETS BASIN (EASTERN UKRAINE) Three new species of nautilids (Gzheloceras aisenvergi sp. nov., Knightoceras extorris sp. nov. and Planetoceras yefimenkoi sp. nov.) have been described from the Carboniferous of the Donets Basin (Ukraine). Gzheloceras aisenvergi sp. nov. is mor- phologically close to the “Gzheloceras” orthocostatum (Kruglov, 1939) and Gzheloceras memorandum Shimansky, 1967. Knightoceras oxylobatum Miller et Downs, 1948 and K. patulum (Unklesbay, 1962) are the most morphologically related species to the K. extorris sp. nov. The form of the conch and the surface ornamentation of Planetoceras yefimenkoi sp. nov. are most similar to the type of genus (Planetoceras retardum Hyatt, 1893). The new data are expanding the taxonomic composition of the genera Gzheloceras, Knightoceras, and Planetoceras and also clarify their geographical distribution. Here we extend theory from non-equilibrium statistical physics to describe the previously unaccounted for fat-tailed form of fluctuations in marine inver- tebrate richness through the Phanerozoic. Using this theory, known as super- statistics, we show that the simple fact of heterogeneous rates of origination and extinction between clades and conserved rates within clades is sufficient to account for this fat-tailed form. -

An early Silurian (Aeronian) cephalopod fauna from Kopet-Dagh, north-eastern Iran: including the earliest records of non-orthocerid cephalopods from the Silurian of Northern Gondwana DAVID H. EVANS, MANSOUREH GHOBADI POUR, LEONID E. POPOV & HADI JAHANGIR The cephalopod fauna from the Aeronian Qarebil Limestone of north-eastern Iran comprises the first comprehensive re- cord of early Silurian cephalopods from peri-Gondwana. Although consisting of relatively few taxa, the assemblage in- cludes members of the orders Oncocerida, Discosorida, Barrandeocerida and Orthocerida. Coeval records of several of these taxa are from low palaeolatitude locations that include Laurentia, Siberia, Baltica and Avalonia, and are otherwise unknown from peri-Gondwana until later in the Silurian. The cephalopod assemblage occurs in cephalopod limestones that currently represent the oldest record of such limestones in the Silurian of the peri-Gondwana margin. The appear- ance of these cephalopods, together with the development of cephalopod limestones may be attributed to the relatively low latitudinal position of central Iran and Kopet-Dagh compared with that of the west Mediterranean sector during the Aeronian. This, combined with the continued post-glacial warming after the Hirnantian glaciation, facilitated the initia- tion of carbonate deposition and conditions suitable for the development of the cephalopod limestones whilst permitting the migration of cephalopod taxa, many of which were previously restricted to lower latitudes. • Key words: Llandovery, Aeronian, Cephalopoda, palaebiogeography, peri-Gondwana. Minute Silurian Oncocerid Nautiloids with Unusual Colour Patterns

A minute Silurian oncocerid Cyrtoceras pollux, from the Prague Basin is assigned here to the genus Pomerantsoceras.The only so far known species of this genus comes from the Upper Ordovician (Hirnantian) of Estonia. Pomerantsoceras thus represents, except for un−revised poorly understood taxa, the single known oncocerid genus surviving the end−Ordovician extinction events. Cyrtoceras pollux is unusual among the Silurian nautiloids because of its small shell. Colour pattern char− acterised by a few longitudinal bands on the entire circumference of the shell is here reported in oncocerids. Longicone and only slightly curved small shells as in Pomerantsoceras are unusual among nautiloids and resemble straight shells of orthocerids and pseudorthocerids, in which the colour pattern consists of straight colour bands. Consequently the shell shape as well as the colour pattern should be regarded as adaptive convergence with orthocerids and pseudorthocerids. It supports the hypothesis that colour pattern functioned as camouflage and its evolution was under adaptive control. In addition, several types of the shell malformations including anomalous growth of septa, shell wall and pits on an internal mould are described.
