As highlighted by this contribution, the “COVID-19” pandemic has dra- matically recalled and universally established some transdisciplinary frontiers that also impose a pedagogical and philosophical-educational reflection. Keywords. Covid-19 - Pandemic - Transdisciplinary frontiers - Pedagogy - Philoso- phy of education Microscopico, globale, inatteso, adattativo, letale: possibili aggettivi in grado di defi- nire il virus che è alla base di “COVID-19” (per utilizzare l’abbreviazione ufficiale di “Corona”, “Virus”, “Disease”, la malattia da nuovo “coronavirus” comparsa nel 2019) che ha determinato la pandemia attualmente in corso e su cui si sono concentrati molteplici “universi”, da quello medico a quello sanitario, da quello politico a quello economico, da quello mediatico a quello civile, da quello culturale a quello delle scienze umane e socia- li, etc. Una concentrazione che ha prodotto esiti molto spesso difformi, mutevoli, etero- genei, contradditori. Purtuttavia, questa pandemia ha ricordato drammaticamente e ha fissato universalmente alcune frontiere transdisciplinari che impongono una riflessione anche filosofico-educativa: 1) il dolore, il lutto, la perdita; 2) il valore della scienza e del- le professioni sanitarie; 3) il distanziamento sociale; 4) l’isolamento, la cura degli altri, la “cura di sé”; 5) le crisi dell’attuale modello di civiltà. Frontiere sulle quali vorrei insistere per aprire – come pedagogista – il primo numero del 2020 (che sicuramente passerà alla storia come “annus horribilis”) della rivista “Studi sulla Formazione”. 1. Il dolore, il lutto, la perdita. Che ci chiamano a riflettere da un lato sulla forza distruttiva di una tragedia immane e, dall’altro, sulla fragilità della vita umana che sfuma rapidamente e in solitudine. Le varie accezioni di homo (sapiens, sacer, loquens, ludens, videns, faber, etc.) sono state spazzate via da una gigantesca onda devastatrice (che evoca La grande onda di Kanagawa di Katsushika Hokusai) mettendo in risalto un homo patiens, attraversato da una “pan-patìa” (per dirla con Aldo Masullo), una sofferen- za collettiva, uno sgomento generale, un dramma condiviso, una tregenda universale e un “comun fato” di leopardiana memoria “che con franca lingua, Nulla al ver detraendo, Confessa il mal che ci fu dato in sorte,

INTRODUCTION Stalking is an insidious crime which can terrorize a victim for months and even years, often culminating in an attempted or com- pleted sexual assault.' Stalking is also a prevalent crime, affecting not only celebrities and entertainers, but also ordinary people.3 The Internet is now another medium through which people are stalked, ushering in the age of electronic stalking.4 The current and much touted explanation for stalking is psychological; individual mental illnesses are supposed to explain stalking behavior.5 The pervasive- ness of the crime, however, suggests the possibility that stalking is not individually rooted.' If stalking activity is not restricted to the mentally disturbed, then what exactly motivates or encourages so many people to stalk? By limiting the causes of stalking to the domain of mental disturbance, we run the risk of not understanding the potentially deeper nature of the phenomenon, thereby hindering us from taking a proactive rather than reactive approach to the problem.

    Hearing Women’s Voices in Popular Song: Analyzing Sound and Identity in Country and Soul Kate Heidemann Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Kate Heidemann All rights reserved Abstract Hearing Women’s Voices in Popular Song: Analyzing Sound and Identity in Country and Soul Kate Heidemann In this study I combine music analysis with critical theory to investigate how different conceptions of feminine identity—intersecting with race and class—are materialized through recorded sound. I present interpretive analyses of four popular songs recorded and released between 1967 and 1974: “Baby, I Love You” by Aretha Franklin, “Fist City” by Loretta Lynn, “If I Were Your Woman” by Gladys Knight and the Pips, and “Jolene” by Dolly Parton. My analyses focus on vocal performance, and vocal quality (or timbre) in particular, as I investigate the means by which the sounds of these recordings participate in cultural discourse on gender, sexuality, race, and class. These songs narrate moments in sexual love relationships (the hope of new love or the threat of infidelity), while the performances of each vocalist, the studio musicians, and the work of engineers and producers combine to create representations of black and working-class femininity that express varying degrees of assertiveness and vulnerability in the face of unequal gender power relations. I compare and contextualize these sonic expressions of identity with the personas these vocalists presented in their professional and public lives, illustrating how these recordings participate in the construction of a multi-faceted and always- emergent history of American womanhood.
