Hartshorn, Jan Reedijk and Erik Szabó End-of-line hyphenation of chemical names (IUPAC Provisional Recommendations) https://doi.org/10.1515/pac-2019-1005 Received October 16, 2019; accepted January 21, 2020 Abstract: Chemical names and in particular systematic chemical names can be so long that, when a manu- script is printed, they have to be hyphenated/divided at the end of a line. Many systematic names already contain hyphens, but sometimes not in a suitable division position. In some cases, using these hyphens as end-of-line divisions can lead to illogical divisions in print, as can also happen when hyphens are added arbi- trarily without considering the ‘chemical’ context. The present document provides recommendations and guidelines for authors of chemical manuscripts, their publishers and editors, on where to divide chemical names at the end of a line and instructions on how to avoid these names being divided at illogical places as often suggested by desk dictionaries. Instead, readability and chemical sense should prevail when authors insert optional hyphens. Accordingly, the software used to convert electronic manuscripts to print can now be programmed to avoid illogical end-of-line hyphenation and thereby save the author much time and annoy- ance when proofreading. The recommendations also allow readers of the printed article to determine which end-of-line hyphens are an integral part of the name and should not be deleted when ‘undividing’ the name. These recommendations may also prove useful in languages other than English. -

TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator Keystroke Guide In your textbook you will notice that on some pages a key-shaped icon appears next to a brief description of a feature on your graphing calculator. In this guide the page number in the textbook on which each of these icons occurs is shown, as well as the key word or phrase that appears in the box, followed by a detailed description of how to use this feature on your TI-83 Plus graphing calculator. Each feature is also given its own number for easy reference. page 2 1 Negative and Subtract You may have noticed that the calculator has two keys with a minus sign on them. The (–) key in the bottom row of keys is actually the negative key. The negative key is used only to write a negative number. The following numbers and expressions would be entered using the negative key: --57* 6-4+154/(-6) . The – key in the right-hand column on the keyboard with the +, ×, and ÷ keys, is the subtraction key. It is grouped with the other keys used to perform the basic four arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). The subtraction key is used between two numbers to indicate that a subtraction is to be done. The following expressions would be entered using the blue subtraction key: 17-813* 7-25-6(3+ 4) . You can tell which of these keys has been used from the screen display, if you look closely. The negative sign produced by the negative key is one pixel (dot) shorter and placed one pixel row higher than the subtraction sign produced by the subtraction key. -

Perry version 13, 2 July 2020 Introduction The purpose of this document is to identify all characters of interest to those who work with Classical Latin, no matter how rare. Epigraphers will want many of these, but I want to collect any character that is needed in any context. Those that are already available in Unicode will be so identified; those that may be available can be debated; and those that are clearly absent and should be proposed can be proposed; and those that are so rare as to be unencodable will be known. If you have any suggestions for additional characters or reactions to the suggestions made here, please email me at [email protected] . No matter how rare, let’s get all possible characters on this list. Version 6 of this document has been updated to reflect the many characters of interest to Latinists encoded as of Unicode version 13.0. Characters are indicated by their Unicode value, a hexadecimal number, and their name printed IN SMALL CAPITALS. Unicode values may be preceded by U+ to set them off from surrounding text. Combining diacritics are printed over a dotted cir- cle ◌ to show that they are intended to be used over a base character. For more basic information about Unicode, see the website of The Unicode Consortium, http://www.unicode.org/ or my book cited below. Please note that abbreviations constructed with lines above or through existing let- ters are not considered separate characters except in unusual circumstances, nor are the space-saving ligatures found in Latin inscriptions unless they have a unique grammatical or phonemic function (which they normally don’t).
