Word CH01 More Skills12.qxd 5/22/08 2:42 PM Page 1 CHAPTER 1 Word More Skills 12 Insert Symbols ᭤ There are many symbols that are used occasionally, but not often enough to put on a standard keyboard. ᭤ Symbols can be found and inserted on the Insert tab in the Symbols group. To complete this document, you will need the following file: w01_Awards You will save your document as: w01_Awards_Your_Name 1. Start Word. Locate and open the file w01_Awards. Save the file in your Word Chapter 1 folder as w01_Awards_Your_Name and then add the file name to the footer. If necessary, turn on the formatting marks. 2. In the first document title, click to the right of Group, but before the space. Click the Insert tab, and then in the Symbols group, click the Symbol button. Notice that a number of symbols display in the gallery. 3. At the bottom of the Symbol gallery, click More Symbols to display the Symbol dialog box, as shown in Figure 1. Each font has a separate set of associated symbols, and you can change the font using the Font box. Many of the more popular symbols are available in the Wingdings font. Click the Trademark symbol™, and then at the bottom of the dialog box, click Insert. Notice that the symbol is placed in the document at the insertion point location, but the Symbol dialog box remains open, as shown in Figure 2. Move the Symbol dialog box if necessary to view the first five lines of the para- graph below the Room Rental subtitle. 7. In the second line of the paragraph, delete the comma and space to the right of Maritime Room. In the Symbol dialog box, click the Em Dash, and then click Insert. An em dash is the word processing name for a long dash in a sentence, which marks a break in thought, similar to a comma but stronger. 8. In the same line, delete the comma and space to the right of restaurant, and then insert another em dash. 9. In the Symbol dialog box, click the Close button. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the Show/Hide ¶ button to turn off the formatting marks, and then scroll to the top of the document. In the title, if the word Kirchwey has a wavy red underline, right-click the word, and then click Ignore All. Compare your screen with Figure 3.
