Interning Insurgent Populations: the buried histories of Indian Democracy Nandini Sundar Darzo (Mizoram) was one of the richest villages I have ever seen in this part of the world. There were ample stores of paddy, fowl and pigs. The villagers appeared well-fed and well-clad and most of them had some money in cash. We arrived in the village about ten in the morning. My orders were to get the villagers to collect whatever moveable property they could, and to set their own village on fire at seven in the evening. I also had orders to burn all the paddy and other grain that could not be carried away by the villagers to the new centre so as to keep food out of reach of the insurgents…. I somehow couldn’t do it. I called the Village Council President and told him that in three hours his men could hide all the excess paddy and other food grains in the caves and return for it after a few days under army escort. They concealed everything most efficiently. Night fell, and I had to persuade the villagers to come out and set fire to their homes. Nobody came out. Then I had to order my soldiers to enter every house and force the people out. Every man, woman and child who could walk came out with as much of his or her belongings and food as they could. But they wouldn’t set fire to their homes. Ultimately, I lit a torch myself and set fire to one of the houses. -

The Yimchunger Nagas: Local Histories and Changing Identity in Nagaland, Northeast India* Debojyoti Das Introduction Ethnic identity, as Stanley J. Tambiah writes, is above all a collective identity (Tambiah 1989: 335). For example, in northeastern India, we are self-proclaimed Nagas, Khasis, Garos, Mizos, Manipuris and so on. Ethnic identity is a self-conscious and articulated identity that substantialises and naturalises one or more attributes, the conventional ones being skin colour, language, and religion. These attributes are attached to collectivities as being innate to them and as having mythic historical legacy. The central components in this description of identity are ideas of inheritance, ancestry and descent, place or territory of origin, and the sharing of kinship. Any one or combination of these components may be invoked as a claim according to context and calculation of advantages. Such ethnic collectivities are believed to be bounded, self-producing and enduring through time. Although the actors themselves, whilst invoking these claims, speak as if ethnic boundaries are clear-cut and defined for all time, and think of ethnic collectivities as self-reproducing bounded groups, it is also clear that from a dynamic and processual perspective there are many precedents for changes in identity, for the incorporation and assimilation of new members, and for changing the scale and criteria of a collective identity. Primary education is a basic requirement for economic development, modernization of the social system and the smooth functioning of modern democratic institution. The modern primary education started in the British period of Assam. It is seen that the primary education was not developed as expected level before independence in Assam. Assam being a backward state, the primary education has an important role to play in the overall smooth development of the state. Primary schools have been established for fulfilling the obligation to provide for free and compulsory education to all children as stipulated after independence in Assam. The work is mainly concerned with the development of primary education before independence in Assam. www.TLHjournal.com Literary Herald ISSN: 2454-3365 An International Refereed/Peer-reviewed English e-Journal Impact Factor: 4.727 (SJIF) Influence of Ramayana on Modern Assamese Poetry Dr. Maheswar Kalita Associate Professor in Assamese Cotton University, Guwahati, Assam Abstract The great Indian epic Ramayana was the origin source of the great tradition i.e. culture, not only of India but also of Nepal, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Thailand, Java, Cambodia and Indonesia. It is to be noted that the ‘culture’ may be described as the characteristics of a society. The ‘characteristics’ consist of every good work carried out by the human beings, i.e. language, literature, music, art, religion, cuisine and social habits. There are deep influences of Ramayana on Indian culture. Indian writers of different ages were influenced by the great epic. That was also seen in the writings of Assamese writers. Madhava Kandali, a famous Assamese poet of 14th century rendered the Ramayana to Assamese. That was not the beginning of the said influence on Assamese literature, as we have seen the influence on the Assamese oral literature also. The romantic and the modern poets had also great respect to Valmiki and to the Ramayana. The influential Assamese literary magazine Ramdhenu was republished in 1952 under the editorial leadership of Dr. Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya and had set trends in Assamese literature. Poets of Ramdhenu tried to combine the western literary styles with Indian ideals. They collected poetic elements from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and other Puranas. Thus, they were deeply influenced by the epics. This paper aims to analysis the influences of the Ramayana on the poetry of Ramdhenu age (1951-60) of Assamese literature. -

College, Jorhat, in 1941 as lecturer in Assamese and English. He left it next year during the Quit India Movement and was imprisoned in 1943. On his release, he joined the B. Barua College, Guwahati, and later became its Principal. <b> Literary Career </b> Hem Barua was the author of several books. He became the President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha in its annual session held at Dhubri in 1972 and was regarded as one of the pioneers of modern literary movement in Assam. <b> Political Career </b> Hem Barua left the Congress in 1948 and became a member of the Socialist party. Later he was elected to the National Executive of the Praja Socialist Party. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Gauhati in 1957 and 1962 and from Mangaldoi in 1967. North East A Comparative Analysis of Naga, Mizo and Meitei Insurgencies Sajal Nag? The word insurgency, despite its rampant use in the modern day, has not been given a separate entry in the Oxford Dictionary of English Language until recently.1 It equalizes insurgents as ‘rebels’. The Encyclopaedia of Social Sciences too does not include it as an independent item. The Random House Dictionary defines insurgency as an act of rejection. It is further amplified to mean an insurrection against an existing regime by an aggrieved group. Modern states view it from a standardised legal perspective. The Dictionary of International Law defines ‘insurgents’ as ‘rebels’, resistance, detachments or participants in a civil war or national liberation war who control certain territory in their country, wage struggles against colonialists, dictatorial fascists and other anti-democratic regimes for self-determination ? Sajal Nag teaches Modern History at the Assam University, Silchar. Earlier, he was associated with the North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, and the Centre for Social Studies, Surat. 1 H.W. September 2018 Update Saramati Hall I (BUR-SHH) Insein Township, Yangon, Myanmar Saramati II (BUR-SHH-2) Deik Gone, Hlaing-ta-ya township Brief History of Home Saramati Hall I began by faith in 2012 with three children. Our contacts (a husband and wife team) began praying about educating and discipling a few Naga children who Lord willing would later become leaders in their villages. So against all odds, many enormous challenges and with faith in God they began Saramati Hall. They now have ten children (representing six different tribes) living at their home in Insein Township in Yangon. These children are from the far away Naga Hills. Nagas are a tribal people group inhabiting northwest Myanmar spread out between Kachin State and Sagaing Division. In India, they are found in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Assam and present Nagaland states. The first American missionaries came to present Nagaland state in India 150 years ago. Until then the Nagas people were all animists. It is taking a long time to spread Christianity among the Nagas due to lack of education, communication systems and different sub tribal dialects. There are nearly forty Naga villages where the Gospel has not yet been preached. Saramati is the name of the highest mountain shared by both India Nagaland and Myanmar Naga hills. Our contact’s vision is that the Nagas will aim very high and be the highest mountain that cannot be hidden for the sake of Christ; that they will be recognized and appreciated by all and that the children will grow in stature, wisdom and the fear of the Lord. -

The Republic of the Union of Myanmar (Pyidaungsu Tham- northern part of the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Mottama mada Myanmar NaingNganDaw), formerly Burma, occupies (Martaban). The central lowlands are divided into two unequal the northwestern part of the Southeast Asian peninsula. It is parts by the Bago Yoma Ranges, the larger Ayeyarwaddy Valley bounded to the west by India, Bangladesh, the Bay of Bengal and the smaller Sittaung Valley. The Bago Yoma Ranges pass and the Andaman Sea, and to the east by China, Laos and Thai- northwards into a line of extinct volcanoes with small crater land. It comprises seven administrative regions (Ayeyarwaddy lakes and eroded cones; the largest of these is Mount Popa (Irrawaddy), Bago, Magway, Mandalay, Sagaing, Tanintharyi (1518 m). Coastal lowlands and offshore islands margin the (Tenasserim) and Yangon) and seven states (Chin, Kachin, Bay of Bengal to the west of the Rakhine Yoma and the Anda- Kayah, Kayin, Mon, Rakhine (Arakan) and Shan). -

International Journal of Social Science and Economic Research ISSN: 2455-8834 Volume:04, Issue:01 "January 2019" POLITICAL ECONOMY OF THE BRITISH AND THE MANIPURI RESPONSES TO IT IN 1891 WAR Yumkhaibam Shyam Singh Associate Professor, Department of History Imphal College, Imphal, India ABSTRACT The kingdom of Manipur, now a state of India, neighbouring with Burma was occupied by the Burmese in 1819. The ruling family of Manipur, therefore, took shelter in the kingdom of Cachar (now in Assam) which shared border with British India. As the Burmese also occupied the Brahmaputra Valley of Assam and the Cachar Kingdom threatening the British India, the latter declared war against Burma in 1824. The Manipuris, under Gambhir Singh, agreed terms with the British and fought the war on the latter’s side. The British also established the Manipur Levy to wage the war and defend against the Burmese aggression thereafter. In the war (1824-1826), the Burmese were defeated and the kingdom of Manipur was re-established. But the British, conceptualizing political economy, ceded the Kabaw Valley of Manipur to Burma. This delicate issue, coupled with other haughty British acts towards Manipur, precipitated to the Anglo- Manipur War of 1891. In the beginning of the conflict when the British attacked the Manipuris on 24th March, 1891, the latter defeated them resulting in the killing of many British Officers. But on April 4, 1891, the Manipuris released 51 Hindustani/Gurkha sepoys of the British Army who were war prisoners then giving Rupees five each. Another important feature of the war was the involvement of almost all the major communities of Manipur showing their oneness against the colonial British Government.
