HABITAT In cultivation requires wet conditions - pond and stream margins, bogs. Seedlings sometimes appear near planted plants in NZ but have been seen ‘escaped’ in e.g. the Isle of Mull in 2013 (pers.obs. C C Ogle) FEATURES Giant, clump-forming, gynomonoecious, summergreen herb, with short, Dunedin Botanic Garden. Photographer: John stout, horizontal rhizomes. The slender radiating inflor. branches are 9.5-11 cm long in G. manicata cf. the thicker branches 4-7 cm X 5-7 mm in central part of panicle (Webb et al.1988). -

It is largely the fruit of many pleasant hours of botanising by the author and a few others and as such reflects their particular interests. History of Plant Recording Peeblesshire is thinly populated and has had few resident botanists to record its flora. Also its upland terrain held little in the way of dramatic features or geology to attract outside botanists. Consequently the first list of the county’s flora with any pretension to completeness only became available in 1925 with the publication of the History of Peeblesshire (Eds, JW Buchan and H Paton). For this FRS Balfour and AB Jackson provided a chapter on the county’s flora which included a list of all the species known to occur. The first records were made by Dr A Pennecuik in 1715. He gave localities for 30 species and listed 8 others, most of which are still to be found. Thereafter for some 140 years the only evidence of interest is a few specimens in the national herbaria and scattered records in Lightfoot (1778), Watson (1837) and The New Statistical Account (1834-45). -

Kellermann2 Perennial stoloniferous herbs with ascending or creeping stems, monoecious, gynomonoecious (in S.A.) or dioecious; leaves arranged in a basal rosette, orbicular to ovate to palmately lobed, petiole with basal ligulate scales, margin serrate. Inflorescence a simple or compound raceme or spike or panicle with numerous minute flowers; male and female flowers in separate inflorescences, or when in the same inflorescence, male flowers towards apex and female flowers below, sometimes bisexual flowers in between; sepals 0, 1 or 2; petals 0, 1 or 2, slightly hooded; stamens 1 or 2; ovary inferior, carpels 2 with 1 ovule per locule, styles 2, entirely stigmatic, fimbriate. Fruit a drupe or nut with 1 seed. The family is monogeneric with 34–50 species. It is distributed in temperate regions of the southern hemisphere, extending to Madagascar, Malesia, Hawaii and S America, N of the equator. In Australia 1 species, G. cordifolia (Hook.f.) Hook.f., is endemic to Tas., 2 other introduced species have escaped from cultivation. It is found mostly along watercourses, in boggy or marshy places. Species of Gunnera have a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, which are attracted by a mucilaginous substance at the base of the leaves.
