Alan Richards. Liaison Officer.

The Victorian Beer Label Collectors Society Committee appoints Liaison Officers to represent the Society as a liaison with specific responsibilities and guidance. Generally these Officers are the principal contact with the Major and Micro Breweries. With the growth of these Breweries it may be necessary to appoint representatives in each State however this is dependent on the Committee’s assessment at the time.

To avoid confusion with each appointed Officer and the Breweries, the following notes are presented as a guide to standard procedure.

Guidance Notes

1. Under the Constitution, the President is permitted to appoint a Liaison Officer who is to deal with the breweries in regard to their donation of labels for the V.B.L.C.S. membership. The Liaison Officer is responsible for the safe keeping of all labels derived from breweries and their distribution to those charged for their inclusion in the newsletter [normally the Editor or the Assistant Secretary]. 2. When a member agrees to serve as a Liaison Officer for a particular Brewery and the position is confirmed by the Committee, the President or Secretary will supply to them a copy of this statement, a copy of confirmation, brewery contacts and any other information available that may be helpful to that member. That member shall then be the sole contact with that / those breweries. 3. If requested, the Secretary will send the VBLCS newsletters bimonthly to a key contact at the brewery and acknowledge the breweries contribution to the Society. The Secretary will have no further contact unless for the purpose of answering specific correspondence. 4. In the event of a member not being able to continue as a Liaison Officer, he / she will advise the Secretary or the President who then will take over the role until another Liaison Officer is appointed. 5. Labels obtained from the breweries shall be forwarded to the Secretary as soon as convenient. Postal charges incurred by that member will be reimbursed. 6. The number of labels sought from each brewery will increase as our membership increases. The Secretary or President will advise the Liaison Officer of any changes in quantity required. 7. The VBLCS may use some short issued labels in raffles however those issued by the breweries will not be sold for profit. Any member selling labels issued through the above process may have their membership cancelled. 8. Roles and responsibilities may increase. If this role increases and there is a need to expand the number of Officers, then a copy of nominated responsible Officers will be sent to each Liaison Officer for reference and to ensure no accidental double representation occurs.

Robert Greenaway President – V.B.L.C.S 15 Nov ‘05 CASCADE BREWERY CO IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE SOMETHING 180 YEARS IN THE MAKING: IT’S HISTORY.

October 2005

Cascade Brewery Co is bringing its rich past to life, including a dedication to founder Peter Degraves.

More than just a brewery, Cascade Brewery Co has been integral to ’s community since founded in 1824 by Mr Peter Degraves, and endures today as a rich part of Australia’s history.

A pioneering industrialist and entrepreneur, Degraves was the visionary behind ’s Theatre Royal, the oldest theatre in Australia, and ran a successful saw mill, shipyards and hotels, employing hundreds throughout Tasmania. His Cascade Brewery was renowned in the 1800s throughout the Australian colonies, and continues to thrive as Australia’s oldest brewery.

“The history of the Cascade Brewery Co is something we are immensely proud of and we’re happy to be honouring Peter Degraves for his vision over 180 years ago,” said Dominic Baker, General Manager, Cascade Brewery Co.

Degraves fostered a legacy, built from his commitment to consistency, purity and quality, and Cascade continues his passion today. Cascade Premium Lager and Cascade Premium Light showcase the perfection of fine Tasmanian ingredients when handled by expert brewers.

Cascade Pale Ale, Australia’s oldest continually brewed beer, and Cascade Special have also been iconic beers since first brewed in the 1850’s. These beers, unchanged, now form part of a permanent range dedicated to Peter Degraves.

Named the Degraves Collection , it groups together Pale Ale, Stout and newcomers Amber Ale and Blonde Lager which pay tribute to Cascade’s highly successful seasonal beer favourites that are now permanently available. Each beer has its own unique story, inspired by the characters that have been a part of Cascade’s colourful and rich past.

Our brewers still love to experiment with the freshest local ingredients available and the successful seasonal format will continue. Cascade will continue crafting small batch brews at different times of the year, known as Cascade Limited Releases . Cascade First Harvest, which has delighted beer lovers since first brewed in 2002, will naturally be a part of this range.

The heritage listed Brewery, with the breathtaking backdrop of Mt Wellington, and surrounding gardens remains among Tasmania’s top tourism destinations.

“Visitors to Tasmania have long been seeking out the Cascade Brewery, and we’ve now improved the experience. A complete refurbishment of the popular Visitor Centre now boasts a spectacular extension with a view to Mt Wellington, and a new bar that has the complete suite of Cascade beers on tap, enabling visitors to sample the range. Cascade’s rich history can also be further explored with memorabilia on display. Our botanic style gardens, yielding some unique and rare flora species, have also been regenerated to ensure its historical significance is retained,” added Dominic. “It’s really is one of the most picturesque historical sites in the country.”

Throughout its 181 year history the Cascade Brewery has become a beloved Tasmanian icon, continually celebrating its unique heritage and, to quote Peter Degraves himself, ensuring it continues to brew “genuine beer… beer that cannot be excelled in this colony.” About Peter Degraves Peter Degraves was born in 1778 in Kent, England. Having amassed and lost a fortune in manufacturing by his early 40s, Degraves looked at where he could rebuild his ventures and began making plans to move to Australia.

After a failed first attempt, due to a damaged ship that saw Degraves detained for breaching passenger contracts, he, his wife and eight children sailed on the ship, the Hope . Landing in Hobart in early 1824, Degraves obtained 2000 acres of land at the foot of Mt Wellington, know as The Cascades, where he established a saw mill and small brewery.

In 1825 he was imprisoned in the Hobart Town Gaol for monies allegedly owed in England. He continued to conduct his business affairs from within his cell, beginning plans for a brewery and even re-designing the goal. Released after five years, construction on the brewery began in 1832 beside the Cascade rivulets. These pure waters were the secret to the superior taste of the Cascade beers. At this time Degraves made a promise to produce “genuine beer… beer that cannot be excelled in this colony”. His first beer was on sale in December.

Peter Degraves died on New Years Eve, 1852. A pioneering industrialist and fervent business man, Degraves financed and built the Theatre Royal in Hobart as well developed a profitable shipbuilding business, which at one time constructed the largest vessel of the Australian colonies.

His sons followed him at the Cascade Brewery Co, carrying on their Father’s promise, as Cascade still does today.

About Cascade Brewery Co. By the 1850s in Tasmania alone there were 48 breweries competing for market share. None however could compare with Cascade Brewery, which had already by that time developed inter-colonial export markets in Sydney and Melbourne. This was primarily due to the reputation Cascade had quickly gained for brewing quality beer and for using only the finest ingredients.

Tales from early life at the Brewery abound, and there were brushes with famous Tasmanians. In the early 1900s a young Errol Flynn lost his way walking in the Cascade bushland. Estate ranger Court Oakes (Cascade’s ranger until his death in 1976) found Errol the next morning wandering aimlessly around the Cascade gardens. Court returned Errol to his parents but not before he gave him a “kick in the pants”.

In 1927 major extensions took place with three stories added to the original 1824 building. This was to facilitate state- of-the-art brewing equipment for the production of .

The Brewery was struck by fire on 7 February 1967. In the aftermath, beer was salvaged from an undamaged tank and bottled for Tasmanians. Despite the devastation, it took only three months production to be back at full capacity. It was said “cold beer kept flowing even while the ashes were still hot.”

In 1987, Cascade Premium Lager was launched and Australia’s love of Tasmanian beers was rekindled for a whole new generation. Cascade has had great success with seasonal and limited release beers, with both the Four Seasons range and Cascade First Harvest Ale receiving critical acclaim.

Throughout its long history Cascade has been awarded medals, trophies and commendations from respected exhibitions, shows and festivals, totalling too many to list. Most recently at 2005 Australian International Beer Awards in May a gold medal was awarded for Cascade Premium Lager, among 10 other medals for Cascade beers.
