In its 24th year, the AIBA is the largest annual beer competition in the world judging packaged and draught beer, awarding up to 30 champion and major trophies, and receiving over 1790 entries from 326 breweries, representing 36 countries globally. RASV is committed to creating opportunities of value for producers with the AIBA providing entrants with credible benchmarking of products, invaluable feedback from the judging panel and market differentiation with the seal of excellence an award represents. To all exhibitors, we thank you for your consistent dedication to quality and excellence and for producing world-class brews, as we have seen in this year’s awards. The 2016 AIBA judging panel boasted a line-up of Australian and international beer industry experts from countries including New Zealand, Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Vietnam, Japan, USA and Spain. The team of 63 judges was led by Little Creatures Head Brewer and Head Judge, Warren Pawsey. We appreciate and value the dedication, enthusiasm and professionalism of all the judges in assessing the entries to such a high standard. RASV is delighted to be a Festival Supporter of Good Beer Week (GBW) in 2016 and we congratulate the GBW team and Australian beer industry on a successful and exciting event. The awards would not be possible without the support of the valued sponsors or many stewards and volunteers and we sincerely appreciate their time and generosity in the delivery of the AIBA. RASV is dedicated to continually assessing and evolving the categories within AIBA to reflect industry trends, production techniques and consumer interest and we look forward to another year of innovation and exceptional brewing ahead. Mark O’Sullivan Chief Executive Officer Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria Australian International 4 Beer Awards Message from the Head Judge WARREN PAWSEY AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL BEER AWARDS HEAD JUDGE The 2016 Australian International Beer Awards judging panel was a diverse mix of locals and internationals, experienced brewers and well-seasoned judges, sensory trainers and some eager associates. The atmosphere on the judging floor was convivial but the judges take their roles very seriously as they assess some of the best beers in the world. Overall the quality of beers assessed this year was a marked improvement on previous years with 108 gold medals awarded, which reflects the standard & overall quality of beers received this year. 960 medals were awarded across all classes. The largest numbers of entries received this year were in the best Specialty Beer, IPA & International Pale Ale classes. It was great to see such quality of entries in these classes as well as the new class for New World Pale Ale with some stand out beers in this class. It was also great to see the Best Amber Dark Lager awarded gold and the Gypsy Brewers Award recognised for the first time this year. There was only one trophy not awarded which was European Style Ale where no golds were awarded in this class. Hats off to the RASV and the AIBA dedicated team. The three days of judging ran smoothly which would not have been possible without the efforts of the competition organisers and the stewards. Back of house ran like a well-oiled machine and we thank you for your professionalism and enthusiasm.
