It is funded by donations from philanthropic trusts and individuals, memberships and commissioned research. Since its launch in 1994, the Institute has carried out highly influential research on a broad range of economic, social and environmental issues. Our philosophy As we begin the 21st century, new dilemmas confront our society and our planet. Unprecedented levels of consumption co-exist with extreme poverty. Through new technology we are more connected than we have ever been, yet civic engagement is declining. Environmental neglect continues despite heightened ecological awareness. A better balance is urgently needed. The Australia Institute’s directors, staff and supporters represent a broad range of views and priorities. What unites us is a belief that through a combination of research and creativity we can promote new solutions and ways of thinking. Our purpose—‘Research that matters’ The Institute aims to foster informed debate about our culture, our economy and our environment and bring greater accountability to the democratic process. Our goal is to gather, interpret and communicate evidence in order to both diagnose the problems we face and propose new solutions to tackle them. Vol-2, Issue-4 PP. 735-741 ISSN: 2394-5788 THE STRUCTURE-CONDUCT-PERFORMANCE PARADIGM AND THE BEER INDUSTRY IN ZIMBABWE Clainos Chidoko and Rose Constancia Sakuhuni & Shylet Mufandaedza Faculty of Commerce, Department of Economics, Great Zimbabwe University, Box 1235, Masvingo, Zimbabwe Abstract The beer industry has the greater market share owned by the informal sector which holds a larger share of home brew market. To investigate the beer industry the study utilized the Structure-Conduct –Performance paradigm to link the structure of the market, the conduct of the firms in the market and their economic performance. The results show that Zimbabwe’s beer industry has a competitive market structure and high levels of industrial concentration in commercial produced beer. Low-end beer industry in Zimbabwe has low entry barriers resulting in plenty of low-end beer business and low quality of products, which determine the fierce competition of the market. Key words: S-C-P paradigm, Beer industry, Concentration, Causal relationship, Market structure, Informal. Contribution/Originality This is one of few studies which have made an in-depth analysis of the beer industry using the structure-conduct- performance paradigm. The analysis has enabled the observation that low-end beer industry in Zimbabwe has low entry barriers resulting in plenty of low-end beer business and low quality of products, which determine the fierce competition of the market. 1. INTRODUCTION The Zimbabwean beer industry is characterized by high levels of concentration with Delta Beverages dominating the market.
