  • 1 the Alps, Richard Strauss's Alpine Symphony and Environmentalism
Note: This is an expanded version of an article appearing in the journal Green Letters (2011); it is intended for a literary rather than musical readership, and the punctuation and spellings are British. The Alps, Richard Strauss’s Alpine Symphony and Environmentalism By Brooks Toliver Introduction After love and death, nature may well be European music’s preferred theme; it figures significantly in troubadour cansos, pastoral madrigals and operas, tone poems, impressionistic preludes, and elsewhere. In light of this it is puzzling how seldom actual nature is invoked in musical discourse. Composers—Richard Strauss among them—have been known to seek out nature in the manner of landscape painters, but there is no similar tradition among the critics, who ground nature-music and their judgments of it not in nature but in other music and criticism. When confronted with the vivid imagery of Strauss’s Alpine Symphony (1915), contemporaries wrote primarily of the aesthetics of vivid imagery, relegating the images themselves to the level of anecdote. Musicologists are quite adept at exploring the relationship of works to cultural constructions of nature, but relatively few have brought real environments into the discussion of canonical music. There has as yet been no serious consideration of how the Alps might be critical to an appreciation of the Alpine Symphony, nor has anyone theorized what the consequences of the Alpine Symphony might be for the Alps. Surely it is worth asking whether it metaphorically embodies sustaining or destructive relationships to the environment it represents, if it respects or disrespects nonhuman nature, and if love of nature is contingent on a symbolic domination of it, to name just three questions.

  • Schriftliche Anfrage Des Abgeordneten Florian Von Brunn SPD Vom 05.11.2020

Mitarbeiter W. Berndt, E. Bezzel, Z. Bierling, R. Bless, K .H. Christmann, R. Dobner, H. Summer Session Munich 2019 Monday, June 3 - Saturday, July 13, 2019 (6 weeks) (arrival Sunday, June 2– departure Sunday, July 14) Modern History of Sustainable Architecture 3 credits (ARC 368R / ARC 388R) Technologies and Techniques of Sustainable Design 3 credits (ARC 350R / ARC 386M) 1 objectives These two integrated seminars on sustainable architecture and design are designed to give students a deep insight into the cultural history of sustainable design in Germany and its direct application at a variety of scales. Due to the unique location of the summer session, the students will experience alternative models of urban planning and mixed-use developments. They will experience various forms of public space, private and public transport, and sustainable planning and design in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Most importantly is to experience life as a Munich resident while living in one or more apartments of different characteristics and locations throughout the city. While most of the time during the week the program will be located in Munich, but the group will also travel to places such as Stuttgart, Freiburg, Regensburg, and to the Alps with Mittenwald, Garmisch Partenkirchen, and Innsbruck, Austria. Typically, most weekends are free for individual or small group student travel. 2 contents 2.1 seminar on technologies and techniques of sustainable design Portions of the seminar will be taught by the instructor of this course in a classroom-style environment (past venues included at the 'Technische Universität München' (TUM) and/or at the Oskar von Miller Forum, both of which are located in the center of Munich).

  • Europe's Battery: the Making of the Alpine Energy Landscape, 1870- 1955
EUROPE'S BATTERY: THE MAKING OF THE ALPINE ENERGY LANDSCAPE, 1870- 1955 A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History By Marc D. Landry II, M.A. Washington, DC April 2, 2013 Copyright 2013 by Marc D. Landry II All Rights Reserved ii EUROPE'S BATTERY: THE MAKING OF THE ALPINE ENERGY LANDSCAPE, 1870- 1955 Marc D. Landry II, M.A. Thesis Advisor: John R. McNeill, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This study examines the environmental history of hydropower development in the Alps from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. Analyzing government archival files, associational journals, conference proceedings, and published contemporary material from several Alpine countries, it seeks to determine how and why Europeans modified the Alpine landscape to generate hydropower, and to explore the consequences of these decisions. I argue that during this time period, Europeans thoroughly transformed the Alpine environment, creating what I call "Europe's Battery": a gigantic system for storing hydropower and distributing it on a continental scale. This study shows how nineteenth-century innovations in energy technology contributed to a dramatic shift in the perception of the Alps as a landscape of "white coal." It demonstrates how at the outset of electrification, Europeans modified Alpine waterways on an unprecedented scale in order to tap into the power of flowing Alpine water. I show how after the turn of the twentieth century, Europeans took advantage of the unique mountain environment to store water, first by converting existing lakes into reservoirs.

They sum up a complex web of connections between people and natural resources, knit together by transport systems. Cities are also connected to other cities, regions, and countries. Like an organism cut off from its food, a city amputated from its vital connections to natural resources--food and fuel--can suffer and even die. This study argues these connections and the transport system that bind them together make a city work. Warfare, especially strategic bombing, disrupts these connections, having huge impacts on citizens’ lives. Urbanites are forced to confront their dependence on natural resources and vulnerability to natural forces such as weather. The subject of this study, Munich, experienced these changes both during and after WWII. Between 1939 and 1948, the city descended from thriving cultural metropole to isolated, burned-out wreck, then slowly rallied to become a city on the mend.
