Abstract The following article examines museum development in the course of the 20th century in Germany. Numerous of these museums for the Fine Arts, Natural Sciences and Cultural History have their origins already in the 19th century. After the year 1900 were again foundations in different sections and of a progressive typology which developed themselves according to the needs of people. Deutsches Museum Munich (founded in 1903) was and is thanks museum-pioneers until today the extraordinary model for all of the Museums for Science and the Techniques world-wide. The journal “Museumskunde” firstly organized and published (1905) by the famous museum expert Karl Koetschau is also an example that survived the 20th century, and is until now the most important scientific museum publication in Germany. Within the periods of the First World War (1914-1918), National Socialism (1933-1945) and Second World War (1939-1945), the Museum-Landscape in Germany was confronted with serious problems. The further development after 1945 was characterized by museum experts, and the German Association of Museums (founded in 1917, re-organized after the Second World War).

  • 1 the Alps, Richard Strauss's Alpine Symphony and Environmentalism
Note: This is an expanded version of an article appearing in the journal Green Letters (2011); it is intended for a literary rather than musical readership, and the punctuation and spellings are British. The Alps, Richard Strauss’s Alpine Symphony and Environmentalism By Brooks Toliver Introduction After love and death, nature may well be European music’s preferred theme; it figures significantly in troubadour cansos, pastoral madrigals and operas, tone poems, impressionistic preludes, and elsewhere. In light of this it is puzzling how seldom actual nature is invoked in musical discourse. Composers—Richard Strauss among them—have been known to seek out nature in the manner of landscape painters, but there is no similar tradition among the critics, who ground nature-music and their judgments of it not in nature but in other music and criticism. When confronted with the vivid imagery of Strauss’s Alpine Symphony (1915), contemporaries wrote primarily of the aesthetics of vivid imagery, relegating the images themselves to the level of anecdote. Musicologists are quite adept at exploring the relationship of works to cultural constructions of nature, but relatively few have brought real environments into the discussion of canonical music. There has as yet been no serious consideration of how the Alps might be critical to an appreciation of the Alpine Symphony, nor has anyone theorized what the consequences of the Alpine Symphony might be for the Alps. Surely it is worth asking whether it metaphorically embodies sustaining or destructive relationships to the environment it represents, if it respects or disrespects nonhuman nature, and if love of nature is contingent on a symbolic domination of it, to name just three questions.

Das Reich der Seele Walther Rathenau’s Cultural Pessimism and Prussian Nationalism ~ Dieuwe Jan Beersma 16 juli 2020 Master Geschiedenis – Duitslandstudies, 11053259 First supervisor: dhr. dr. A.K. (Ansgar) Mohnkern Second supervisor: dhr. dr. H.J. (Hanco) Jürgens Abstract Every year the Rathenau Stiftung awards the Walther Rathenau-Preis to international politicians to spread Rathenau’s ideas of ‘democratic values, international understanding and tolerance’. This incorrect perception of Rathenau as a democrat and a liberal is likely to have originated from the historiography. Many historians have described Rathenau as ‘contradictory’, claiming that there was a clear and problematic distinction between Rathenau’s intellectual theories and ideas and his political and business career. Upon closer inspection, however, this interpretation of Rathenau’s persona seems to be fundamentally incorrect. This thesis reassesses Walther Rathenau’s legacy profoundly by defending the central argument: Walther Rathenau’s life and motivations can first and foremost be explained by his cultural pessimism and Prussian nationalism. The first part of the thesis discusses Rathenau’s intellectual ideas through an in-depth analysis of his intellectual work and the historiography on his work. Motivated by racial theory, Rathenau dreamed of a technocratic utopian German empire led by a carefully selected Prussian elite. He did not believe in the ‘power of a common Europe’, but in the power of a common German Europe. The second part of the thesis explicates how Rathenau’s career is not contradictory to, but actually very consistent with, his cultural pessimism and Prussian nationalism. Firstly, Rathenau saw the First World War as a chance to transform the economy and to make his Volksstaat a reality.

After the end of the Cold War, the German re-unification and a growing cooperation in Europe the beginning of the 21 st century seemed – in my eyes - to give good reasons for more optimism than working for the “defences of peace” . Now, at the end of 2017, it is with sadness that I acknowledge the wisdom of this constitution, in the face of wars, civil wars, terrorism, and growing tensions around the world. The need for an education for peace is growing again strongly . MoW and its registers have a very important role to play in it. We start this Newsletter with an outstanding document of the MoW Register, a letter from Gandhi to Tolstoy, just one document from that archive of the ”Tolstoy’s Personal Library and Manuscripts, Photo and Film Collection“ that was inscribed in the Memory of the World Register in 2011.

  • Schriftliche Anfrage Des Abgeordneten Florian Von Brunn SPD Vom 05.11.2020
