    Reel Injun While we watch the documentary “Reel Injun” produced by Cree film maker Neil Diamond, we want to think about how the media has shaped the images of First Nations people. We also want to think about who benefits from the construction of these images. Remember, media images are CONSTRUCTED; that is to say that they have been created by people for a purpose. Your task as a learner and as a citizen is to develop skills that allow you to DECONSTRUCT the images by analyzing them and putting them in their historical and social context. The documentary “Reel Injun” attempts to do this by studying the Hollywood portrayal of “Indians” in the movies. We are going to watch the documentary and record the most important ideas that come out of the Neil Diamond’s work. The documentary has a structure that is important to understand. The film maker interviews experts and eyewitnesses while superimposing images from movies over the years. He is attempting to connect pictures with ideas. This technique is used constantly in film making. This technique is powerful in that human memory is stronger when ideas are connected to images or stories. Your task is to view the film and make those connections. In order to do this you have to engage in the film in a more active way. You have to watch with focus and record what you see and the commentary made by the experts and eyewitnesses. Why is there such a stark difference? Why are Native Americans so often thought about as only in the past? From the early days of books and portraits to the television shows and films, Native Americans have always been portrayed as warriors and as obstacles with the view point of the various media from the “White Man’s” perspective.

    Portraying Indigenous Perspectives through Self Representation By Mykalah Singh During this semester I have been examining the way Indigenous peoples are portrayed in Hollywood films. For so long indigenous peoples have been only portrayed as static, one dimensional characters, who are reduced to various stereotypes, with their stories being told not from their own perspectives. Since the early beginnings of Hollywood film, non-indigenous filmmakers have told untrue stories of indigenous people. They have recycled the same old tropes wherever they see fit without acknowledging Indigenous perspectives, or taking into account the implications of their actions. By doing so, these filmmakers fail to realize how these images and storylines portraying indigenous people affect indigenous people themselves, and the way non-indigenous people see them. This essay will examine the need for accurate portrayals of indigenous peoples, and how Indigenous filmmakers are responding effectively to non-indigenous perspectives, through the practise of self-representation. I first became interested in the ways in which Indigenous people were portrayed in Hollywood films, when our FNIS100 class read Thomas King’s novel “the Inconvenient Indian: a Curious Account of Native People in North America”. Here I learned and the characteristics of stereotypes present in Hollywood films that I had noticed but never really thought critically of before. Examples of some of these stereotypes included the ‘noble savage, blood thirsty savage, Indian princess, and vanishing Indian’, all of which have been overwhelmingly present in Hollywood’s films throughout the years. Through our class’ discussions I realized the influence these representations had on the viewers, and how there was virtually no accurate representations taking place in these narratives told by non-indigenous perspectives.

An article defending the petition states: “With so few movie heroes in the US being people of color, non-white children receive a very different message from Hollywood, one that too often relegates them to sidekicks, villains, or background players.”1 Additional examples of such outcries over recent miscasting include Johnny Depp as Tonto in The Lone Ranger (2013), as well as, to a lesser extent, Benicio Del Toro as Jimmy Picard in Arnaud Desplechins’s Jimmy P.: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian (2013).2 Neither the problem nor the outcry are new. Many studies have shown why the movie industry has often employed non-Indian actors to portray Indian characters.
