Deus Ex Machina? Witchcraft and the Techno-World Venetia Robertson Introduction Sociologist Bryan R. Wilson once alleged that post-modern technology and secularisation are the allied forces of rationality and disenchantment that pose an immense threat to traditional religion.1 However, the flexibility of pastiche Neopagan belief systems like ‘Witchcraft’ have creativity, fantasy, and innovation at their core, allowing practitioners of Witchcraft to respond in a unique way to the post-modern age by integrating technology into their perception of the sacred. The phrase Deus ex Machina, the God out of the Machine, has gained a multiplicity of meanings in this context. For progressive Witches, the machine can both possess its own numen and act as a conduit for the spirit of the deities. It can also assist the practitioner in becoming one with the divine by enabling a transcendent and enlightening spiritual experience. Finally, in the theatrical sense, it could be argued that the concept of a magical machine is in fact the contrived dénouement that saves the seemingly despondent situation of a so-called ‘nature religion’ like Witchcraft in the techno-centric age. This paper explores the ways two movements within Witchcraft, ‘Technopaganism’ and ‘Technomysticism’, have incorporated man-made inventions into their spiritual practice. A study of how this is related to the worldview, operation of magic, social aspect and development of self within Witchcraft, uncovers some of the issues of longevity and profundity that this religion will face in the future. Witchcraft as a Religion The categorical heading ‘Neopagan’ functions as an umbrella that covers numerous reconstructed, revived, or invented religious movements, that have taken inspiration from indigenous, archaic, and esoteric traditions. -

Reviewed by Sean McCloud (Department of Religious Studies, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte) Published on H-Amstdy (September, 2006) Toward the History of an Emergent New Religion Her Hidden Children examines the historical development of American Wicca and the broader Pagan movement. Together, these two combine to constitute what is likely the fastest growing new religious movement in the United States today. Chas S. Clifton, a Colorado State English professor and movement member since 1972, suggests that Wicca, the largest branch of Paganism, has even "become a world religion, although a tiny one" (p. 3). Despite its explosive growth, American Paganism is an amorphous and elusive entity. It lacks the elaborate institutional structures and centralized hierarchies of many established religions. In addition, as many as 80 percent of all Wiccan practitioners are "solitary," meaning that they worship outside of formal groups. These characteristics provide obstacles for the scholar seeking to narrate the movement's history. Indeed, Clifton suggests that "there is no one narrative about the growth of Pagan Witchcraft in America, but rather multiple narratives springing up at once" ( p. 11). Despite such difficulties, Clifton has provided readers with an initial and useful step toward the emergent history of American Paganism and Wicca. -

chapter 1 Introducing Religion and Dark Green Religion This chapter explores terms that are central to this study: religion, spiri- tuality, nature religion, green religion, and dark green religion. Although this sort of linguistic labor may seem most pertinent to those with back- grounds in anthropology and religious studies, it should be even more valuable to those with little background in the academic study of reli- gion. The rationale for this starting point is simple: terminology mat- ters. It shapes methods and focuses attention in illuminating ways. Ter- minology also carries assumptions that may occlude phenomena that might well be relevant to any given inquiry. It is important in this inves- tigation, therefore, to reflect critically on the terms employed. What, for example, is the difference between religion and the absence of religion— or between religion and spirituality— or between what I am calling nature religion, green religion, and dark green religion? Where are the boundaries between them? Do such distinctions illuminate or confuse our understanding of the world we inhabit? Religion and Family Resemblance Analysis There has been much debate, of course, about the origin, definition, and utility of the word religion. One of the reasons for this lack of con- sensus is the difficulty of agreeing on what characterizes “religious” phenomena. Does religion have a substantive essence? Or does it func- tion typically or universally in certain ways? No consensus has emerged, however, including as to whether any specific traits or characteristics are essential to the phenomena. -

SOLSTICE PRAYER JUNE 20161 Grace, Mercy, Love and Peace continue to be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. This month is full of major activities and alignments in the heavens. We are sending this full moon and solstice letter out now so as to equip you for the peak activity of June – the Summer solstice. We want to put you on alert concerning the main issues to tackle in prayer as you man the altar of the Lamb of God this season. Summer/Winter Solstice Saturnalia – Northern Hemisphere In ancient times, Winter Solstice and Saturnalia are celebrated hand in hand by pagans (witches, wizards, all manners of sorcerers, and so forth). Celebration of the winter solstice (December 20/21/22), the longest and darkest night of the year, usually begins with the Saturnalia. From December 17-21, pagans honoured Saturn, god of agricultural fertility with feasting. During this time, masters feasted with slaves. A slave is usually appointed as a mock king of the household. Throughout Saturnalia, the mock king rules and all slaves are given the freedom to do and say what they liked. After that, slaves go back to being slaves until the following year. During the time of slavery in America, Saturnalia was a major event and is still celebrated today in New Orleans. It is significant to note that the final abolition of slavery act in the U.S. was passed during the 1865 celebration of Saturnalia, a time for mocking slaves. A time in which slaves can pretend they are free. -

Social Constructions of the Native Faith: Mytho-historical Narratives and Identity-discourse in Hungarian Neo- paganism by Ádám Kolozsi Submitted to Central European University Nationalism Studies Program In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Advisor: Professor András Kovács CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2012 Abstract This thesis provides a detailed examination of the historical roots and national ideologies of contemporary Hungarian native faith movements, focusing specifically on the narrative boundary-setting mechanisms. In my historical research, based on the analysis of primary resources, I am looking for the roots of neo-pagan concepts in Hungary. In the narrative analysis of contemporary neo-pagan discourses, I examine the ethnic myths, historical memories, national ideologies and symbolic boundary-setting mechanisms. The thesis shows that native-faith myths (re)define actual group boundaries and reinforce current group identifications. In this way, neo-pagan nationalism contributes to the reformulation of national ideologies, national sentiments and „groupist‟ ideas. I argue that the public success of native faith ideas is explicable by their fitting to broader group beliefs of contemporary ethno-nationalism. Heelas asks "How is clear cut conversion, when it occurs, to be explained? It must immediately be noted that the academic community is far from agreed about what could be taking place. Theories abound, ranging from the psychoanalytical to the cognitive. Advocates of different theories are committed to different accounts of human nature, ranging from the behaviouristic to the voluntaristic. Indeed there is so much diversity, with so little advance on the front of finding evidence which conclusively counts either for or against particular claims, that some academics have suggested that the best strategy is to be agnostic for the time being - on the matter of what exactly generates change" (Heelas 1996: 186). Certainly "conversion" has meant different things historically in different social and religious settings. It also has legal, political and cultural implications that vary in significance depending on the convert’s chosen religion and the country in which they practice their faith. All religions have different requirements and criteria for accepting a convert as one of their own, these vary considerably; while the Christian faith has historically been quite happy with the concept of enforced conversion, the Zoroastrians do not traditionally have any mechanism accepting converts, not even a spouse Lamb and Bryant (1999). Ill Abstract Most research indicates that almost 100% of British adults know their birth-sign. Astrology is an accepted part of popular culture and is an essential feature of tabloid newspapers and women's magazines, yet is regarded as a rival or, at worst, a threat, by the mainstream churches. Sceptical secular humanists likewise view it as a potential danger to social order. Sociologists of religion routinely classify it as a cult, religion, new religious movement or New Age belief. Yet, once such assumptions have been aired, the subject is rarely investigated further. If, though, astrology is characterised as New Age, an investigation of its nature may shed light on wider questions, such as whether many Christians are right to see New Age as a competitor in the religious market place.
