Un milagro que solo la tecnología moderna puede deparar. Esta versión de El Anillo del Nibelungo está caracterizada por una puesta en escena espectacular del Robert Lepage; quien usa todos los medios como imágenes 3D, proyecciones, mecanismos gigantes controlados por computadoras, naturalmente con el objeto de atraer a un público joven. No sé si ello hace la ópera o el drama musical, como se llama ahora, más accesible, pero de todas maneras es atractivo, si es que no tergiversa la trama o va a contrapelo con la música, como sucede en muchas de las puestas en escena en Alemania. No es el caso aquí, donde la escena acompaña a la música en todo momento – se puede decir en forma sincronizada, en el real sentido de la palabra. Hay momentos trascendentales, hermosos como el sobrevuelo del pájaro en el bosque, y otros cercanos a lo involuntariamente cómico, como el dragón que parece salido de una película de Walt Disney. Otros en que la gigantesca escenografía aplasta un tanto la intimidad de la escena, como en el dúo final de Brünnhilde y Siegfried – el fuego virtual sigue hasta el final de la ópera, y la intimidad de la escena del encuentro se pierde. Pero son pequeños detalles que no menguan la calidad de la presentación. En cuanto a los cantantes, el Metropolitan ha tenido problemas con el protagonista. El primer tenor seleccionado para el papel, Ben Heppner, decidió en febrero retirarse de este proyecto y renunciar a interpretarlo en el futuro. Es que es uno de los roles más exigentes para tenor, que demanda esfuerzos sobrehumanos que pueden llegar a mellar la voz. El reemplazo elegido fue Gary Lehman, quien tuvo que retirarse por una infección viral. Se eligió entonces a un joven tenor texano, Jay Hunter Morris, quien acaba de cantar el rol de Siegfried en San Francisco. Tiene el porte, la agilidad y versatilidad perfectas para el rol – pero su voz no es lo que se espera de un tenor heroico. Donde más se aprecia este hecho es en el aria de 'Notung', cuando forja la espada que rompió Wotan en la jornada anterior, "La Walkyria". Y tiene un enorme defecto para quien domina el idioma alemán: no se le entiende una sola palabra, cuando justamente en Wagner texto y música están íntimamente ligados. Dicho todo esto, Hunter Morris ha creado un excelente Siegfried. Deborah Voigt no me convenció. Su voz media no está totalmente controlada, aunque los agudos generalmente son excelentes, y a su interpretación escénica le faltó el fervor necesario. Es su primera interpretación del rol, y es probable que pueda irse integrando más en el transcurso de las próximas funciones. Quizás el personaje mejor interpretado fue Gerhard Siegel, un Mime absolutamente excepcional, tanto vocal como en su interpretación escénica. No así Eric Owens. A pesar de su voz extraordinaria, sobreactuó definitivamente el rol de Alberich, transformándolo casi en un papel bufo. Hubiera sido un excelente Osmin del "Rapto en el Serallo", de Mozart. El Wanderer de Bryn Terfel cubrió todas las expectativas. Un Wotan ya resignado, abatido y vencido en el tercer acto, y con grandes dotes vocales en su larga intervención con Alberich y luego con Siegfried. Un extraordinario cantante. Y finalmente la Erda de Patricia Bardon, muy buena vocalmente. Pero según el texto Wotan la llama “anciana”, y definitivamente no lo representa. También el director de orquesta tuvo que ser reemplazado. Debía haber dirigido James Levine, pero su enfermedad se lo impidió, y tomó las riendas el nuevo director musical del Metropolitan, Fabio Luisi, quien al mismo tiempo está dirigiendo "Don Giovanni". Imprime un ritmo ágil a la música, consiguiendo terminar 20 minutos antes de lo programado. Momentos líricos muy hermosos, como en la escena del bosque y plenamente wagnerianos con toda la fuerza necesaria. Excelente el desempeño de la orquest. On January 19, Vice President Erika Reitshamer gave an audiovisual presentation on Wagner’s early opera Das Liebesverbot. This well-attended event was augmented by photocopies of extended excerpts from the libretto, with frequently amusing commentary by the presenter on Wagner’s influences and foreshadowings of his future operas. February 23 brought the excellent talk by Professor Hans Rudolf Vaget of Smith College. Professor Vaget spoke about Wagner’s English biographer Ernest Newman, whose seminal four-volume book The Life of Richard Wagner has never been surpassed in its thoroughness. In the early part of the twentieth century, the music critic Newman served as a counterbalance to his fellow countryman Houston Stewart Chamberlain, Wagner’s son-in-law and an ardent Nazi. The talk also included aspects of Thomas Mann’s fictional writings on Wagner, as well as the philoso- pher and musician Theodor Adorno and Wagner’s other son-in-law Franz Beidler. On April 19 we learned the extent of Buddhism’s influence on Wagner’s operas thanks to a lecture and book signing by Paul Schofield, author of The Redeemer Reborn: Parsifal as the Fifth Opera of Wagner’s Ring. The star of the whole cycle became Nina Stem- me, a Brünnhilde who reminded many of us of Birgit Nilsson and her singing of that role. Stemme, another Swedish soprano, sang the role gloriously with a large, gorgeo- us voice which could easily be heard over the orchestra. Her top was secure, her mid- dle was very good, and her low notes usually projected well. She can even sing with por- tamento — the shaping and connecting of notes — something Birgit Nilsson could also so. But Stemme is a better actress and can move around the stage with dramatic intent. One wished that her German diction were better, but this was a minor flaw.
