Gosset Pierre Gosset was Mayor of Ay when, in 1584, he founded his boutique Champagne House. Gosset still has a site in Ay although they have now a grander establishment in Épernay as well. They attach great importance to the specific character of each individual terroir and, using their long standing contacts, they blend together the best Crus from 45 Grand and Premier Cru villages to great effect. They believe in the old ways, not only is the fruit all harvested by hand, but the ‘rémuage’ (turning of the bottles) is all done by hand as well. The results speak for themselves. Blin Champagne H. Blin started in 1947, after Henri Blin, from the ancient Vincelles family, together with 28 other winemakers bought a press house. Pinot Meunier dominant, the House is situated in the Marne Valley where this grape flourishes producing a unique, subtle freshness and fruitiness. Louis Boyier champagne was named after Alfred Louis Bower, the Lord Mayor of London 1924-25. Krug Special Cuvée is blended from up to 30 different Premier Cru plots, some no bigger than a back garden, and from as many as ten different vintages, all barrel fermented. Prices valid from 23rd May - 4th June 2017 Domaine Auguste Clape Now in his eighties, Auguste Clape is one of the few remaining old-school proponents of French winemaking, a pioneering and unassuming genius who falls almost effortlessly into the category of ‘great.’ In reality, of course, there has been much effort involved, the Clapes inserting themselves into the northern Rhône landscape in the early 1900’s to build their fortunes from next to nothing. Indeed, the Clape Syrahs from the Cornas appellation are among the most celebrated in France. Auguste paved the way there as the first to bottle his own wine. Today he works alongside son Pierre and grandson Olivier, farming a mere eight hectares of precipitous terraces by hand using traditional methods. Here, old vines are harvested as late as possible in a gamble with Nature to produce wines capable of tremendous longevity. The King, then, of Cornas, both because his wines are widely considered to be the best from this tiny appellation, and because he has at times fought single-handedly to maintain its integrity. This thesis-guide was compiled through the research of the various Denominaciones de Origen of Spain, the history of Spain, the regions of Spain and their individual histories and cultures, and, of course, the many, many wines of Spain.
