  • A Writer's Calendar
A WRITER’S CALENDAR Compiled by J. L. Herrera for my mother and with special thanks to Rose Brown, Peter Jones, Eve Masterman, Yvonne Stadler, Marie-France Sagot, Jo Cauffman, Tom Errey and Gianni Ferrara INTRODUCTION I began the original calendar simply as a present for my mother, thinking it would be an easy matter to fill up 365 spaces. Instead it turned into an ongoing habit. Every time I did some tidying up out would flutter more grubby little notes to myself, written on the backs of envelopes, bank withdrawal forms, anything, and containing yet more names and dates. It seemed, then, a small step from filling in blank squares to letting myself run wild with the myriad little interesting snippets picked up in my hunting and adding the occasional opinion or memory. The beginning and the end were obvious enough. The trouble was the middle; the book was like a concertina — infinitely expandable. And I found, so much fun had the exercise become, that I was reluctant to say to myself, no more. Understandably, I’ve been dependent on other people’s memories and record- keeping and have learnt that even the weightiest of tomes do not always agree on such basic ‘facts’ as people’s birthdays. So my apologies for the discrepancies which may have crept in. In the meantime — Many Happy Returns! Jennie Herrera 1995 2 A Writer’s Calendar January 1st: Ouida J. D. Salinger Maria Edgeworth E. M. First Ave, Tucson, AZ 85719 [email protected] www.invisibletheatre.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Invisible Theatre continues its 46th Anniversary Season with LEBENSRAUM An Evocative Drama by Israel Horovitz February 7 – 19, 2017 (January 13, 2017, Tucson, Arizona); IT continues its 46th Anniversary Season with the evocative drama LEBENSRAUM by award winning playwright Israel Horovitz featuring David Alexander Johnston, Lucille Petty and Steve Wood. It is the dawn of the 21st century. The new German chancellor invites six million Jews from around the world to make Germany their home as a gesture of reconciliation. Three actors play over forty roles in an unforgettable journey exploring the effects of this policy. Although set mostly in Europe, it is clearly relevant to an America where we’re still very much navigating the ramifications of our own past sins of slavery and racial injustice. This heart-felt theatrical gem directed by Susan Claassen combines political wallop with an emotional climax. This production is made possible in part through the generous support of Mary Ann Stubbs “LEBENSRAUM is rivetingly real and yet thrillingly theatrical!” - Broadway World LEBENSRAUM by Israel Horovitz will play from February 7 - 19, 2017 with the official press opening on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. The Invisible Theatre is located at 1400 N. First Avenue (at Drachman), Tucson, AZ 85719. The single show ticket price for LEBENSRAUM is $32. A low cost preview ($20) takes place on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.

A Message from the President A NEW YEAR, A NEW DAY, NEW QUESTIONS association It struck me the other day that Elul, the month preceding Rosh Hashanah, the new year, the month that for jewish usually coincides with the end of the summer, is marked in two ways: hurricanes and the theatre sounding of the shofar! During the month of Elul we are supposed to hear the blowing of the shofar! The shofar is a call to awaken us from our mundane fall routine, awaken our consciousness to be aware of ourselves and our actions, to be conscious of our actions toward others, to be conscious of how we are in our community. So, too, hurricanes are a reminder that with all our technological advances, Nature/Mother Earth/G-d, however you see it, has its own way of shaking things up - reminding us not to take life or our community for granted, and that life is greater than possessions. So what does that mean to us, AJT, to Jewish theatre artists, producers and scholars? What is our wake up call? To discover how we can best serve each other and the AJT organization. AJT’s Executive 2004-2005 To reach out to each other, our audience, our community. To reach across continents and oceans to our colleagues. President (2nd Term) Deborah Baer Mozes To listen with great care to each other. Especially the difficult, small squeaking voice within your association, your board, your Vice-President Mira Hirsch cast – or yourself. Treasurer Janet Arnold Independent and Playwright Reps It’s time to awaken ourselves to the fact that a new year and perhaps a new era for AJT are coming.

He also wrote articles, criticism and reviews for Art Forum, Brooklyn Bridge, The New York Times, The Newark Star Ledger, and The Village Voice. It was in the course of this work that he amassed his collection of papers. Mr. Harris died of a massive coronary July 27, 2000, in New York City at the age of 49.
