nº 24 - SEPTEMBER 2015 PACIFISTS DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR IN DEPTH “The whole world is our homeland”: Anarchist antimilitarism Dolors Marín Historian Anarchism as a form of human liberation and as a social, cultural and economic al- ternative is an idea born from the European Illustration. It belongs to the rationalism school of thought that believes in the education of the individual as the essential tool for the transformation of society. The anarchists fight for a future society in which there is no place for the State or authoritarianism, because it is a society structured in small, self-sufficient communities with a deep respect for nature, a concept already present among the utopian socialists. A communitarian (though non necessarily an- ti-individualistic) basis that will be strengthened by the revolutionary trade unionism who uses direct action and insurrectional tactics for its vindications. On a political level, the anarchists make no distinction between goals and methods, because they consider that the fight is in itself a goal. In the anarchist denunciation of the modern state’s authoritarianism the concepts of army and war are logically present. This denunciation was ever-present in the years when workers internationalism appeared, due to the growth of modern European na- tionalisms, the independence of former American colonies and the Asian and African context. The urban proletariat and many labourers from around the world become the cannon fodder in these bloodbaths of youth and devastations of large areas of the pla- net. The workers’ protest is hence channelled through its own growing organizations (trade unions, workmen’s clubs, benefit societies, etc), with the support and the louds- peaker of abundant pacifist literature that will soon be published in clandestine book- lets or pamphlets that circulate on a hand-to-hand basis (1). -

Cruz, B.A., M.A. Denton, Texas May, 1996 Cruz, Richard A., Andre Malraux: The Anticolonial and Antifascist Years. Doctor of Philosophy (History), May, 1996, 281 pp., 175 titles. This dissertation provides an explanation of how Andr6 Malraux, a man of great influence on twentieth century European culture, developed his political ideology, first as an anticolonial social reformer in the 1920s, then as an antifascist militant in the 1930s. Almost all of the previous studies of Malraux have focused on his literary life, and most of them are rife with errors. This dissertation focuses on the facts of his life, rather than on a fanciful recreation from his fiction. The major sources consulted are government documents, such as police reports and dispatches, the newspapers that Malraux founded with Paul Monin, other Indochinese and Parisian newspapers, and Malraux's speeches and interviews. Other sources include the memoirs of Clara Malraux, as well as other memoirs and reminiscences from people who knew Andre Malraux during the 1920s and the 1930s. The dissertation begins with a survey of Malraux's early years, followed by a detailed account of his experiences in Indochina. -

Enfrentado a los grandes movimientos de masas coetáneos, principalmente fascismos y comunismos, ha salido moral- mente más que airoso al anteponer el valor de la libertad sobre todas las cosas, al proponer la independencia frente a la sumisión, a Dno reducir su liberalismo a una simple cuestión de libre comercio. Ha tra- tado de mantener su fidelidad al racionalismo enciclopédico en el corazón de las tinieblas del irracionalismo del siglo, pero no parece haber salido precisamente indemne de todos estos enfrentamientos. Es posible que se haya equivocado a la hora de valorar la condición humana. La filósofa Hanna Arendt, que sufrió también los avatares de una época dura para quienes poseían una habitación propia en su pensamiento, pasó la segunda mitad de su vida tratando de entender precisamente el poliedris- mo de esta condición humana. THE WRITER’S RESPONSIBILITY IN FRANCE From Flaubert to Sartre1 Gisèle Sapiro Centre national de la recherche scientifique As Michel Foucault observed in his famous essay, “Qu’est-ce qu’un auteur?” before discourse was a product, it was an act that could be punished.2 The author’s appropriation of discourse as his personal property is secondary to its ascription to his name through penal responsibility. In France, authorial responsibility was introduced in 1551 through royal legislation directed at controlling the book market. The Chateaubriant edict made it compulsory to print both the author’s and the printer’s names on any publication. The notion of responsibility is thus a fundamental aspect of the emergence of the figure of the modern writer. The state first imposed this conception of respon- sibility in order to control the circulation of discourses. But after writers inter- nalized the notion, they deployed it against the state in their struggle to establish their moral right on their work and to have literary property recog- nized as individual property, a struggle that culminated in 1777 with a royal decree recognizing literary compositions as products of labor from which authors were entitled to derive an income.3 This professional development reinforced the writer’s social prestige and status, in Max Weber’s sense.4 The withdrawal of the state from the control of the book market and the abjuration of censorship entailed the need for new legislation restricting the principle of freedom of speech, which had been proclaimed in Article XI of the 1789 Déclaration des Droits de l’Homme et du citoyen. -

Anti-patriotism was the reaction of reason and sentiment the moment patri- otism reigned. It took on diverse forms in accordance with the degree to which it relied more or less consciously on individualism, on love for all men, on love for one man (as with Camille, the sister of the Horatii), or even on a reasoned or sentimental preference for the laws and morals of a foreign country. Buddha was necessarily hostile to any patriotic exclusivism, this man who doesn’t even admit what can be called human chauvinism, but extends to all liv- ing beings his loving mercy. In Greece the Sophists were anti-patriotic. Socrates, the greatest of them, proclaimed: “I am not Athenian; I am a citizen of the world.” He condemned the fatherland in the name of “unwritten laws,” i.e., in the name of conscience. Other Sophists rejected it in the name of a more in- terested individualism. Nevertheless, their contemporary Aristophanes detested his democratic fatherland because he admired the aristocratic organization of Lacedemonia. (Thus M. Paul Bourget and M. Leon Daudet, dazzled by the pre- cision power of the German command had their years of naive patriotism: little gigolos who almost inevitably surrender themselves to the most fearsome “ter- ror.”) Plato and Xenophon, poor disciples of Socrates who falsify and use him a bit like M. Charles Maurras falsifies and uses M. Auguste Comte, have sen- timents similar to those of Aristophanes. -

Armand (1872-1962), was a member of the Salvation Army when he discovered anarchism around 1896 while reading Les Temps nouveaux, a journal recently launched by Jean Grave. He contributed to Sébastien Faure’s Le Libertaire before founding L’Ere nouvelle with his companion Marie Kugel. From 1901 to 1911 the journal evolved from mystical Christian socialism to philosophy and the Communist libertarian morale, culminating in individualist anarchism. In 1907 he wrote his first pamphlet on sexuality: De la liberté sexuelle, where he advocated not only a vague free love but also multiple partners, which he called “plural love.” Although the publication’s tone was considerably more outspoken than most others like it, Armand’s theses did not differ significantly from the ones repeated incessantly by the male and female companions that supported free love. Only after founding L’en dehors (1922) did Armand elaborate an increasingly original conception of libertarian sexuality. 1. The establishment of l’en dehors and the campaign for revolutionary sexualism L’en dehors did not champion revolutionary sexualism from the outset. During its first twenty months, few articles referred explicitly to issues concerning sexual ethics. Armand tried at first to state his view of anarchist individualism by re- pudiating both the vegetarian movement and the “heroic” interpretations of indivi- dualism. -

1 n 1923, during a series of lectures on political parties and doctrines organised by the Romanian Social Institute, INicolae Petrescu – who took the fl oor on the matter of anarchism –, concluded: “we do not have a proper militant or theoretical anarchist movement.”1 His claim had a categorical tone, leaving no room for doubt. The subject seemed therefore closed, despite the fact that during another set of conferences about the new Romanian Constitution, anarchism was at one point brought into discussion as a threat to democracy. Perhaps Petrescu was convincing enough and it is clear that his opinion was also shared by the academic community: to date, next to nothing has been written in Romania about anarchism on Romanian soil, or about anarchist ideas in a Romanian context. Indeed, today no anarchist movement is known to a wider audience. While these things are clear, one may wonder how the following statement should be judged: Radovici had his Socialist library quite well supplied, and he made it available to all of us [...] By chance or due to Radovici’s preferences, most of the works were anarchist publications. For every Paul Lafargue or Benoît Malon, you would fi nd a Jean le Vagre (Jean Grave), a Kropotkin, an Élisée Reclus (the great geographer), a Bakunin, or a Domella Nieuwenhuis – the Dutchman …2 1.
