While I haven’t had the chance to visit with all of you, I am fortunate to have been given the opportunity to serve the Brotherhood and visit with several Chapters throughout the country. I’m continuously inspired by the passion and warm Icarian hospitality that I’m greeted with. While we live in different regions and environments, our strong Icar- ian heritage resonates throughout each of us. I’d like to thank my fellow Supreme Lodge members for their hard work and commitment throughout the year: Cathy Pandeladis – Supreme Vice President, Katerina Mavrophilipos – Supreme Secretary, Evangelos J. Fragos – Supreme Treasurer, Maria Vardaros – Legal Counsel; and District Governors: Chrissa Lefes, Erica Aivaliotis, Stelios Alexan- der, Steve Stratakos, Alexandra Katsas, Sissi Makris, and Yianni Fragos; Scholarship Chairman: George Livanos; our Social Media Team: Katie Kefalos & Rainia Lardas; Magazine Editor: Mary A. Deschamps; and Webmaster: Joanna Pantages. I’d also like to thank the Foundation Board for working diligently and closely with the Supreme Lodge for the advancement of our great organization. This is an exceptional group of individuals who work hard as a team for the advancement of the Brotherhood. As our national convention draws near, I’d like to encourage each and every one of you to do what you can to attend. The convention is the one time of year we gather together to set our objectives for the year ahead and goals for the future. It is also an opportunity for us to enjoy our rich heritage and culture, and help solidify it for generations to come. I’d like to thank Chapter Spanos-Areti for their hard work in organizing the national convention. This year’s conven- tion, which will be held in Detroit, promises to be a memorable one with many exciting events and activities planned throughout the weekend. As a reminder, the Convention hotel is the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel. The Supreme Lodge recently emailed and mailed the “Convention Delegate” and “Chapter Officer” forms to each of the Chapter Presidents. Please ensure that these forms are completed for your Chapter and returned to our National Secretary Katerina Mavrophilipos. It is important to return these forms as soon as possible, to ensure all necessary Chapter and Delegate information is available by the start of the convention. Finally, I’d like to sincerely thank the Chapter officers and members of the Brotherhood who have done so much throughout the year. Your commitment and dedication to our great organization is precisely why the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America continues to thrive and accomplish so much. Παρ᾽όλο που δεν ευκαίρησα να επισκεφθώ όλα τα παραρτήματα της αδελφότητας, με συγκίνησε η ζεστασιά και η φιλοξενία όλων των παραρτημάτων που κατάφερα να επισκεφθώ. Αν και ζούμε σε διαφορετικές περιφέρειες από άκρη σε άκρη της Βόρειας Αμερικής, η δυνατή Ικαριακή κληρονομιά μας είναι εμφανείς στον καθένα από εμάς. Καθώς πλησιάζει το ετήσιο συνέδριο μας, θα ήθελα να σας ενθαρρύνω να προσέλθετε. Το συνέδριο μας δίνει την ευκαιρία να συγκεντρωθούμε ώστε θα θέσουμε νέους στόχους για το μέλλον της αδελφότητας. Ασφαλώς είναι και η ευκαιρία να χαρούμε όλοι μαζί παρέα την πλούσια κληρονομιά μας και να καλλιεργήσουμε φιλικές και κοινωνικές σχέσεις για τις επόμενες γενεές. Πρόσφατα, το διοικητικό συμβούλιο απέστειλε αιτήσεις δια τον ορισμό α) Αντιπροσώπων Συνεδρίου και β) Εκπρόσωπο του Παραρτήματός σας. Παρακαλώ να μην αμελήσετε να συμπληρωθούν και να επιστραφούν στην Γραμματέα Κατερίνα Μαυροφιλίππου, καθώς η άμεση επιστροφή των αιτήσεων εξασφαλίζει την έγκυρη πληροφόρηση για τους διοργανωτές του συνεδρίου. Ολοκληρώνοντας, ευχαριστώ θερμά τους αντιπροσώπους και μέλη όλων των παραρτημάτων, οι οποίοι έχουν προσφέρει τόσα καλά αυτή την χρονιά που πέρασε.     Arms and the Woman Margaret Poulos From Heroines to Hyenas: The Civil War, 1946–49 5.1 Introduction As the previous chapter argued, EAM's importance lay in its parallel function as a social 1 movement that sought to transform national socio-political culture according to the standards of Western modernity. As such, the mass mobilisation and participation of Greek women in all facets of the national liberation project ushered in new possibilities for women's citizenship and gender politics in Greece. With liberation in 1944, great promise for lasting social change held sway, and few predicted the tragedy that was to unfold over the next four years. How did the Civil War, and the attendant cultural turbulence, affect notions of social justice and 2 gender equality established on a mass scale during the Resistance? Was the experience of the partisan women fighters of the Civil War seamlessly linked to that of the EAM-ELAS women fighters? How does the experience of the female partisan fighters of the Civil War inform our understanding of the relationship between nationalism and emancipatory politics, or feminism, which are questions pertinent to this book? Put simply, the Civil War was the culmination of escalating tensions between left and right 3 during the Axis occupation, complicated further by foreign intervention in the context of emergent Cold War politics. At another level, it was underpinned by the clash between Greek traditionalists and progressives, between those hostile to EAM's socio-economic reforms and those who were its greatest beneficiaries. Officially, the Civil War began in 1946 and ended in 1949 with the defeat of the partisans on the northern Macedonian mountains of Grammos and Vitsi.

I argue that it was the ambiguous play between Greek music’s discursive value (its “image”) and the semiotic potential of its sound and music-adjacent practices, that allowed for its double-reception by Euro-Israeli elites and Working-class immigrants from Arab and Muslim countries (Mizrahim). This ambiguity positioned Greek music as a site for bypassing, negotiating, and subverting the dichotomy between Jew and Arab. As embodied in the 1960s by the biggest local star of Greek music––Aris San (1940- 1992) ––and by Greek international films such as Zorba the Greek, Greece and “Greekness” were often perceived as an unthreatening (i.e. neither Arab nor Muslim) Mediterranean culture. ii At the same time, much of the popular music practiced under the Greek sign betrayed the lingering influence of earlier Ottoman café music, which it shared with other forms of popular and traditional music from across the Middle East. As such, it successfully furnished sonic spaces catering to immigrants from Arab and Muslim countries and even to Palestinian-Arab audiences, and provided a model for the hybridization and modernization of Oriental musical practices and tastes.
