Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I’d like to once again thank you for your support and dedication to the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America. Our success is directly linked to the members of our great organization, and because of you I’m proud to say that the oldest Greek fraternal organization in North America is thriving.

The history of our organization is nothing less than remarkable. Originating from a small island in the Aegean, we have grown into an entity that not only works to preserve our strong Ikarian heritage but pursues philanthropic and educational endeavors both domestically and abroad. I hope you are as proud as I am to be associated with the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood, and work to enlighten others on who we are and what we stand for.

As we prepare for the summer months ahead and our upcoming Supreme National Convention, I ask that you remain actively involved in your Chapter and work to set goals for the future. Our intent should always be to promote participation among all of our members, as this is the key to our success and longevity as an organization.

I’d also like to thank those of you who have helped Ikaria Magazine grow over the years, by con- tributing to the content shared in the publication. For me, the Ikaria Magazine is a special part of the Brotherhood, as it connects us together and informs us of news and developments from across the nation and abroad. Please continue to support this publication and encourage others to submit content, we love to hear of the news that our Ikarian brothers and sisters have to share.

I look forward to seeing you at the National Convention in Detroit, Michigan later this summer!

Fraternally Yours,

Damianos T. Skaros Supreme President Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America “Icaros”

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Many know of me as a sculptor, of which many large works and installations are in Universities and colleges as well as many corporations. Many do not know that I also paint. I do not profess to be a painter. To define my approach to painting, I paint as a sculptor interpreting what I see into form and space. During my career of exhibitions, I have sometimes included paintings, drawings and prints.

My return to painting was inspired upon my return to . We had a stone home built in 1913 and had fallen in total disrepair. Only the walls remained. In 2001 I began to restore the home, adding a second floor and beside it a garage with a second floor that serves as my art studio.

Soon, I furnished the home and prepared my studio for painting on the second floor of the garage. I also set up welding equipment to create steel sculptures in the garage. Many of these works were exhibited in Athens and purchased by patrons.

One of my exhibits was brought to the attention of the United States Ambassador. He then invited and prepared a reception for me in summer of 2009, and exhibited some of my work in the foyer of his residence. It was a memorable evening with many international guests. I was honored. My thoughts were personal in that a village boy was being recognized in the American Embassy. I wish I could have shared that event with my parents.

These paintings were completed between 2004 and 2018. I was inspired to be re-connected with my roots and to create these views of the areas of Karavostamo, Arethousa, and . Several of the works were brought back to my home in Pittsburgh.

I will be returning again summer of 2019 to continue creating new paintings of the wonderful views of vil- lages, the Aegean Sea, and landscapes.

Fascinating Facts About Greece Philip Chysopoulos Published in the Greek Reporter Contributed by George Paralemos

Everyone knows that Greece is the cradle of Western Civilization, the birthplace of democracy, that it has a stunningly beautiful coastline, and that our Independence Day is March 25th. However, there are some facts that very few people are aware of. There may be some things about Greece and its history that even many Greeks don’t know. Why not take this opportunity to brush up on some interesting facts and factoids about this most fascinating country before you travel there for an idyllic vacation this summer.

• There are about 2,000 islands and islets in Greece, but only 170 of them are inhabited. The largest, Crete, has an area of 8,260 square kilometers. • Greece is the number one country in the world in the natural sponge trade. • Athens had a population of about 7,000 only two centuries ago. Today the capital’s residents exceed 5 million, almost half of the country’s population. • Surrounded by the sea, there is no place in Greece that is more than 137 km (85 miles) away from the sea. Greece has the tenth-longest coastline in the world. • Greece’s merchant fleet accounts for 70 percent of all European ships. Domestic law requires 75 percent of a ship’s crew to have Greek citizenship. • Last year, Greece welcomed over 30 million visitors, almost three times its own population of 11 million. • Approximately 7 percent of all the marble quarried on the planet comes from Greece. • In the 1950s, only 30 percent of Greeks knew how to read and write. Today, the illiteracy rate is just 5 percent. • Greece ranks third in the world in olive oil production. The cultivation of olive trees in the country began in an- cient times. Indeed, some olive trees which are known to have been planted in the thirteenth century still produce fruit. • Even though Greece is surrounded by the sea, 80 percent of the country is mountainous. The country does not have even one navigable river because of its particular geomorphology. • Over twelve million people in the world speak Greek. There are ten million Greek residents, about one million Cypriots, and another million Diaspora Greeks, mainly in the US, Australia and in the countries of the EU. • The has been spoken for approximately 3,000 years, making it one of the oldest languages in the world. • Athens has been inhabited for 7,000 years, making it one of the oldest cities in Europe. • On average, Greeks enjoy 250 days of sunshine a year. This corresponds to 6,000 hours of sun per year. • Life expectancy in ancient Greece was only 36 years for women and 45 years for men. Of the children who were born in those times, only one half managed to survive infancy. Today, life expectancy has reached 77 years for men and 82 for Greek women. Greece ranks 26th in the world among countries with the highest life expectancy. • Greece has more archaeological museums than any other country in the world, which is only natural considering the age of its civilization. • About 100,000 birds from northern Europe and Asia spend the winter in Greece. • Slaves in ancient Greece accounted for 40-80 percent of the population of city-states. They were mainly prisoners of war, abandoned children or the children of slaves. • Wildlife in Greece includes 116 species of mammals, 18 amphibians, 59 species of reptiles, 240 species of birds and 107 species of fish. However, about half the mammalian species are now in danger of extinction. • Government corruption cost the country approximately 800 million euros in 2009 alone. • Eons ago in geological time, Greece was a rocky mass, covered completely by seawater. Its mountainous area was formed after the collision of its tectonic plate with Europe, and even today the earthquakes in the Aegean are related to the movements of its particular plate within the lithosphere.

Greek Islands, where people live longer than just about anywhere else

Kenneth Dickerman and Lily Bungay Published in the Washington Post Contributed by George Paralemos

Legend has it that Icarus flew too close to the sun, ignoring the warnings of his father, Daedalus. As Icarus excitedly soared across the sky, his wings, which were made of feathers and wax, began to melt, and he tumbled into the sea and drowned. His body later washed up on an unnamed island. In honor of his fallen son, Daedalus named the island and its surrounding sea after Icarus. Many of us hope to live long, fruitful and healthy lives. And some of us, in the end, are more successful at that pursuit than others. But there are several regions around the world that have been found to foster those kinds of lives more than others. At least, that’s what New York Times best-selling author and National Geographic Fellow Dan Buettner determined after studying the work of two researchers. In a study published by the Journal of Experimental Gerontology, Gianni Pes and Michael Poulain identified Sardinia as the region with the highest concentration of male cente- narians. Buettner, along with a team of researchers and demographers, found other regions where they determined that people lived longer, including Oki- nawa, Japan; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Loma Linda, Calif.; and a small, out-of-the- way Greek island called Ikaria. Photographer Lily Bungay became intrigued by Ikaria and decided to see what life was like for its residents. What she found was an island where people enjoy activi- ties such as beekeeping and grow- ing their own vegetables. Bungay says that, “Ikarians are more likely to celebrate their 100th birthday with the whole village, than to be seg- regated from their community. Institutional care homes do not exist on the island, but instead, every individual home is cared for.” Bungay’s exploration of Ikaria was fueled by her interest in aging and “how we talk about (and don’t talk about) and visualize older people.” The result of her exploration came to fruition in a project she calls “a visual ode to the residents I met, their landscape, diet and the magical feeling that time is irrelevant on the island . . . Recurring shapes and whispers of Greek mythology are punctuated by the stories of characters found living in the mountains. This is not an attempt to uncover the secret to the islanders’ longevity, but rather, to trace the unhurried rhythms of a community where every person is valued and included, no matter their age.”

Hello from the members of Cleveland Chapter Pharos. Hoping everyone had a good winter and you are all gearing up for the summer. Here in Cleveland, we’ve been pretty busy. In March we hosted a spaghetti dinner for one of our fellow Ikari- ans, Irene Gerakis Gemelas. Irene needed some help in purchasing special eyeglasses to help her with her vi- sion. Thanks to our members and friends we were able to raise a substantial amount. Irene was very moved and appreciative of the support. We also hosted our Independence Day Dance on March 30th. For the first time in many years, it was a dinner dance and very well attended. We danced well into the

night with the help of Teddy Poulos and Victoria Mavorgeor- gis on their violins. Earlier that day, many of our mem- bers also attended Cleveland’s Greek Independence Day Parade. Even though it was a little rainy that day, the sun came out for a little bit, while we marched.

We were saddened by the loss of several of our members in the past few months. Nicholas Chapler, John Papan- dreas, and Elpida Glaros. May their Memory be Eternal.

Our members are planning for our picnic to be held sometime in August, stay tuned for more details. Have a great summer, and see you all in Detroit Labor Day weekend.

April 14, 2019 – Greek Independence Day Parade – We participated in the annual Greek Independence Day Parade on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. We had excellent participation and energy spearheaded by the float, which, featured Icarian music. All parade spectators were dancing the ikariotiko as our float was making its way up Fifth Avenue. We also had the honor of Supreme President Damianos Skaros joining us in the festivities.

Olga Loizon

Olga Loizon, loving wife of 72 years of John W Loizon, Loizos, Architect of Birmingham, Michigan, passed away surrounded by her family on January 21, 2019. Olga was born in 1926 and raised in Detroit, daughter of Greek immigrant parents Anestis and Panayota Patrikis. Olga learned about taking risks at an early age from her father, a real estate speculator. At the age of 8, Olga first experienced the retail food business by helping her mother sell candied apples on the steps of local elementary schools. Olga's idea for her souvlaki concept was sparked while visiting Greece with her children in the 1960s. During a visit to the local market square, Olga and her children first tasted souv- laki, a traditional Greek sandwich of meat and vegetables wrapped in a baked pita bread. She and her kids were hooked…and Olga was inspired. While she and her three children would visit the souvlaki shop weekly for dinner, Olga's ideas were developing. In 1971, after being the first women to secure a business loan from her local bank, Olga opened her first restaurant in an 11 by 14 foot space in Birmingham's Continental Market. When she opened her first shop in 1971 the souvlaki would cost you 75 cents. The rent was $150 per month. First day sales were $13. . . Yes thirteen dollars. Unbelievably Olga was optimistic, telling her son and skeptical partner Bill “Thirteen dollars? That’s Great!" With the taste, quality and uniqueness of her food, she quickly outgrew this small location and took over the bakery across the hall. Within 5 years Olga would turn this single location into an opportunity for investors to create a small chain of restaurants throughout southeast Michigan. Today, Olga’s Kitchen is an iconic Detroit brand run by Team Schostak with 26 locations. Olga is a true pioneer not only in the restaurant business, but also as a Greek female entrepreneur. Her vision, tenacity and passion for great food has created a Detroit brand and fan base that spans generations.” Awarded the prestigious Esteemed Women of Michigan award in 2011, Olga herself was still an active and vital part of Olga’s Kitchen. In 2016 the Greektown Preservation Society recog- nized Olga for her contribution to Greek culture in Michigan. Her “Olga Visits” to the numerous restaurant locations have become immensely popular among guests. She loves to sit and hear the stories of her loyal fans of college kids heading right to Olga’s upon their return home, or out-of-towners insisting on stopping at Olga’s straight from the airport, and small chil- dren begging for Olga’s for their birthdays. It warmed her heart and justified her journey. Olga's parents would be proud. Olga's legacy will live on at the Olga’s Kitchen restaurants and through the Olga Loizon Memorial Foundation. The Olga Loizon Memorial Foundation was founded to provide financial support to local women pursuing their dreams and passions, paving the way for a long and successful career.

Despina Xenakis

Despina (Gemelos) Xenakis passed on February 11, 2019 at the age of 86. Beloved wife of 63 years to the late An- thony Xenakis. Loving mother of Kathy (John Mantagos), Ergetti, Emanuel (Dee), Alexander, and Theodore Xenakis. Devoted grandmother of Paraskos (Emmanuela), Antoni, Kalliope (Sebastian), Shane, Teriann, Despina (Clint), Dede, Anthony, Angelo, Dessie Joy, Nikki and Alexa. Great-grandmother of Ion, Dioni, Luke, Emanuela, Aristides, Alexan- der, and Leonidas. Despina lived in Pittsburgh all of her life and worked with Pittsburgh Public Schools for 24 years. She was extremely proud of her Greek heritage. She was a member of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church since she was married and a member of Holy Cross Philoptochos Ladies since 1950. Despina was also a member of the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America since 1950 and served as secretary of the Foundation for 10 years. She also served as head of a Cub Scout group of St. Pius Church for 10 years. Together again with the love of her life Anthony Xenakis.

Tribute to our Loving Parents – Despina and Anthony Xenakis How blessed we were to have such loving parents that were so devoted to each other and to their children. The values they instilled in us; foremost faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, always love and support your family, and embrace your rich Icarian heritage. My parents’ home, which was the first Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, was truly blessed. Though the house was small, it was filled with love and welcomed all. My parents lived modestly, yet their table was always plentiful for all who came to visit. I remember as a young lady, Mom had issues with me staying out late. I would tell her, but I am with the children of your Icarian friends. She said that it was not acceptable for me to come home so late, and if I was hungry after a Greek dance or party to come home and eat. So that’s what I did, coming home at 3:00am with 20+ people, and Mom would wake up and start making breakfast for us all. My friends always commented on how much they appreciated her hospitality, which extended later on to their own children. Our door was always open and Mom and Dad were truly excited and glad for the visits. My Father’s customers would tell me how my Dad would walk in the restaurant with a big smile and a sincere greeting shout- ing “How is everybody today?!” They would tell me they could never imagine Daddy angry, he beamed with such happiness. When Daddy would come home from a long day’s work, he would

Tribute to Despina and Anthony Xenakis - continued always shout for my Mom to give her a big kiss and then hug all us kids. Daddy enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, material things were not important to him; he was a true minimalist. Daddy would tell anyone who would listen, “I am married to this beautiful woman for 62 years and she blessed me with 5 healthy children and 12 grandchil- dren.” Daddy’s devotion to Mama was constant. When he looked at her it was as if he still saw the 18 year old beauty he married. Lastly Daddy’s dedication to his siblings and the love he held for them transcended through the genera- tions. Two generations later, my chil- dren, nieces, and nephews are as close with their cousins as Daddy was to his siblings. My Mom was the perfect example of unconditional love. No matter what life threw her way, she always stayed posi- tive. Though her body was sabotaging her, she never lost her zest for life; dancing while holding on to her walker. Her mind was as sharp as a tack, especially her strong Democrat opinions. She was so worried that our leaders have lost their humanity. As a daughter I could always count on Mom to cushion the blows of life. I was willing to take risks and pursue my dreams because I could count on Mom being my rock. We didn’t always agree, but no matter what the differences her love was constant. Mama was my best friend, my travel companion, my shopping buddy, my confidant; I miss her so.

Thank you Mom and Dad for being the best parents a child could ask for. Submitted by Ergetti Xenakis Faatuiese
