Trimming adjustments for speed. by Coach Tom Uebel, the champion canoe sailor. pictured below and on the left

On any leg except down wind, First trim the sail for the most wind. Next work on weather helm. Adjust the leeboard to track the boat straight. If more trim is needed change the hull to windward, careful not to overdo it but maintain speed. If need to really lay into on heavy winds my next adjustment is to let off on the sail. Constantly repeating to achieve the most speed with the least amount of steering. On many a light wind something to do. Downwind I lift the boom by leaning the hull.

Canoe Sailor 56 page 9 Canoe Sailor 55 page Canoe Sailor 56 page 10 BAIL AND SAIL

Sometimes it is so windy it feels like you are flying but then you end up swimming! Many experienced canoe sailors have sail canoes with decks and bulkheads or air bags tied under the gunwales and to the floor, or custom flotation tanks. FLOTATION will keep the canoe above water so that you get in and bail.

Here are a few ways to tip over – in case you want to practice, while wearing a comfortable proper-fitting PFD. Tie in tie bailer and the paddle to the boat ahead of time. You can sit on the mainsheet, sail downwind in heavy weather and jibe accidentally, fall asleep sailing in a wind shift, disregard small craft warnings, disregard power boat wake, sail fast in heavy weather heeling over a lot feeling exhilarated, have a hiking strap break in a good breeze, or sail with a lot of water in the canoe, for examples. Once you are in the water and the sail is all over the place, don’t forget to look for your hat, your bailer, your paddle, your whistle, and your friends. You may want to take the sail down.

GETTING BACK IN - so you can bail. Maybe a or canoe can hold your canoe and sail rig and help bail, steadying the canoe so you can get in. Get on the leeboard to pull the canoe over stand on the leeboard, slowwwlly pulling the canoe up. Get on the leeboard to roll the canoe up slowly. Kick if you must to get in. Climbing in amidship, hold onto the thwart or opposite gunwale while patiently steading the hull. After bailing the water, you can paddle to shore, or with experience, sail on a reach.

A great deal is available from a guy in NJ. a complete ACA rig, with sail #1420, that I will sell for $275 firm. John Depa [email protected]

Grumman sailing canoe. No sailing rig. Boat is in good condition. Needs paint and repair or removal of wooden trim. Trim is not original. Has Rudder gudgeons, $750 or make offer. The canoe sports the original canvas but has been refinished, inside and out, many times. The leeboards and rudder are in near-perfect condition but the sail is tattered and the mast broken but useable. The canoe comes with floor boards and a fan seatback. Spruce gunwhales, no broken planking or ribs. Asking price - best reasonable offer. Canoe is in Trumansburg, NY. Contact Scott A. Sutcliffe [email protected] or 607-387-9247 and leave a message.

Old Town Sail and spars, $250. Marilyn Vogel email: [email protected]

For Sale: 17 foot 1926 Old Town Otca Canoe The boat is a CS model with all of its woodwork in good shape. The boat is in A-1 physical shape and can be used as either a restoration project needing minor modifications to bring it to original 1926 condition--details on request--or kept in its current status. We re selling this classic beauty because we really do not have a good place to keep it. It needs a garage or barn or living room- somewhere dry and protected; out of the weather and off the ground. The exterior varnish work is done with a high tung oil varnish--more delicate than urethane but more easily maintained. The interior wood has not been touched. There are two minor patches in the canvas. The outside was repainted 2 years ago with Interlux Burgundy urethane. Although the boat has hardware to rig it to sail, it was not originally a sailing canoe.. The original owner created a mast thwart and step. I have purchased and installed rudder hardware as well as a rudder. Also included are: 2 fanback Seats, Floorboards, 1 wood paddle, 2 original seats (needing re-canning).

A complete ACA sail rig is available with boat purchase at an additional $300. Boat is located in Basking Ridge, NJ. Delivery can be arranged within 300 miles. If you would like photos of details of the boat and of the boat under sail, please e-mail me directly. This boat was featured in WoodenBoat Magazine in the March/April 2014 Relaunchings section. Price - Reduced to best reasonable offer. Hillary Zaenchik Eric Russell 908-244-6202 917-446-5414 [email protected] [email protected] Canoe Sailor 56 page 13 Development of the ACA Rig

Before Larry Zuk designed the ACA lateen sail and rig in 1981 the sails for canoes were hard to set up or use and many had to be designed individually and made for a traditional cruising class sail canoe. For ACA racing, the traditional wooden canoe, designed for , had to be measured for a specific sail area to make different size canoes fairly competitive. Each cruising class canoe had a sail with a specific size which often had to be custom made. Other sails such as the Grumman, OldTown and Peterborough sails made for canoes were sometimes sluggish or cumbersome. Mad River canoe had a commercial 55 square foot rig for a short time. A variety of canoe sail rigs made it hard for canoeists to sail together.

The ACA sail and rig were designed for canoe paddlers who were on a trip to set up a sail and take it down and stow quickly and easily. It was also designed to enable more paddlers to take up sailing a canoe. The sail was also designed for cruising class racing. In 1983 the ACA class started as a racing class. Chuck Tummonds, a canoe sailor and at the time Commodore of the ACA, helped Larry refine the design.

Larry Zuk wrote “To try to fill the need for an introductory sailing rig, for most commercial canoes, that is efficient, relatively inexpensive and can be made by most canoeists, I designed the ACA-Class rig and developed the sail through four prototypes. I gave the rights to the American Canoe Association Sailing Committee. The sail is a cruising sail for day sailing or taking trips with camp outfit. For that purpose the rig should be simple, light weight, have a sail which is efficient so that it moves the canoe in light air but is still manageable in a stiff breeze and not too high, for getting under tree limbs when coming ashore. The sail should be quickly hoisted, lowered and stowed by the crew underway in the canoe and the boom should be high enough to clear the sailors head, when he is sitting in the bottom of the canoe where he should be, so he can see and doesn’t have to be ducking the boom all the time.

Of course, the racers wanted to race the rig, so, after consultation with many sailors, I developed a simple set of rules, which made almost any commercial canoe eligible for the ACA- Class and the rig is also eligible for the cruising class on most canoes. The Class became an official ACA sailing class and also an official class in Finland with other countries considering adopting it. The rig has been relatively successful as we have already sold more than 450 sails and people keep sending me pictures of canoe sailing with it in , Africa, Australia, etc. The sail is very well made of extremely fine sailcloth and is sold at the price at the sailmaker and shipping cost. There is no dealer’s profit. Along with the sail we send instructions for making the rig from wood or aluminum, and setting the rig on your canoe.”
