3 Annual Report 2010-2011

Phil Clements

It gives me great pleasure to present the club‘s 52nd Commodore‘s report. There is no doubt we have had a fantastic season and the future is looking bigger and brighter than it has for many years.

For the first time since the 2003 annual report I don‘t need to preface my report lamenting the fact that we have come through another drought-affected season! Not only did we start with a full lake, but we finished with one as well.

It seemed to be a case of ―just add water‖ as we surged forward as a club. I would also suggest that we were well placed to take advantage of improved water levels. The combination of a careful approach to operate within our means during the recent lean years and still maintain the facilities and enthusiasm also contributed to a successful resurgence.

A strategic planning session was held in August and a number of key goals were identified. Nearly all of these were either achieved or acted on during the season.

Despite showing their age, our facilities are still very good; our location is still the best place on Lake Hume; the water is fresh and clean (most of the time); the foreshore is well protected and safe AND we offer a terrific program of sailing and social events to enhance your sailing skills and/or enjoyment of a relaxing time by the water.

When it comes to reviewing the activities for this season, the list of highlights is extensive. It is very gratifying to be able to reflect on so many good things that have happened during the course of the last season.

Noteworthy events and activities included:

 A significant increase in new members who started making a positive and valuable contribution to the running of the club from the day they arrived!

 Juniors, juniors and more juniors! What a delight it has been to see so many youngsters at the club. Special thanks to this year‘s junior rep Aaron Pimm. He was a regular participant and assistant at all the club activities this year and a regular newsletter contributor. Well done.

 Successful calendar of events and activities on and off the water. Some notable achievements on the competition front that VC Terry will have in his report.

 The establishment of the pizza oven and revamped BBQ area. Brilliant effort by Mark Harris to get this project off the ground. It has been and will continue to be a significant and distinctive feature of the AWYC social scene. Thanks also to Darren Kiel for his generous contributions of materials for this project.

 The Tackers mobile boatshed program. It‘s difficult not to get carried away with the praise for this program. It was sensational and another catalyst for giving our membership a real kick along this year. We were fortunate to have two programs during the season. The schools-week saw over 200 kids put through a half day course and the full program had about seventeen complete a week-long program in the school holidays.

 An AWYC Basic Sailing Program was conducted on ten successive Saturday mornings. This provided introductory training for over twenty people both younger and older. It was initiated by YA accredited trainer Noel Ryan and very well supported and carried through by many other club members. Special thanks to Rob Minato and Peter Kalin.

 Establishment of a fleet of junior Lasers that will provide some healthy competition for the younger club members.

 Sailability coming of age in a spectacular fashion. Up to 50 participants per session; Continued support from CARN and Rob Newman and the very successful hosting of the Valvoline Vic Access Dinghy Championships.

4 Annual Report 2010-2011

 Community support and assistance for the Sailability program has been a big highlight. In particular our thanks to:  Commercial Club Albury for the new RIB  Albury Rotary Club Foundation (pontoon replacement contribution)  Valvoline (Sponsorship of Access Dinghy Titles)  Dean Quinlivan (Border Mower Supplies)

 The Naval Cadets continued to expand their program and held a successful inter-unit regatta at the club. We look forward to seeing more of them during the 2011-12 season.

 The Lady-helm and novice racing program was commenced and is showing signs of gaining momentum. Congratulations again to John Landon for continuing with the Wednesday evening social and sail program. This excellent initiative gathered momentum this year with up to 70 people enjoying a mid-week hit out at the club.

 Open Day attracted a great crowd and resulted in new members signing up on the day. We also had a visit from a float-plane.

 Participation in the Camp Quality program. Apparently a big hit with all participants.

 Lease arrangements with GMW are all but finalised and we will have an acceptable 10-year lease in place.

 We continued to maintain our presence at a YV level with attendance at the YV Club Conference and Commodores‘ Forum. We also hosted a visit from the CEO of YV, Ross Kilborn. Numerous ‗Club‘ Boats have been resurrected and put back into action. Servicing of the Access and Extreme dinghies also took place.

 What a year it has been for publicity! Excellent efforts by our PR guru Wes and some great support from local journo and photographer Trevor Jackson, was much appreciated. One edition of the BM even featured sailing on the front and back pages!!

 The pine plantation next door has been given a clean up thus reducing fire hazards and is now less of an eye- sore.

 The galley again catered beautifully for all our culinary needs. Big thanks to the Pimm family for a huge effort in this important part of the club.

 Administratively, we have undertaken the necessary repair and maintenance activities to keep the club comfortable and attractive. This has been done based on the philosophy that we should be aiming to retain sufficient cash reserves to cater for significant capital improvements or emergencies. We did however take the plunge and utilise some of these reserves to re-tile the clubhouse ceiling which was badly in need of a spruce up.

 A small surplus was generated this year thanks to the improved membership situation. More about that in the Treasurer‘s report. I would like to also acknowledge the contribution by Victoria to our drought situation. They have given us considerable flexibility in regard to fees that would normally have to be paid.

 Well-attended and productive working-bee sessions.

 An enjoyable and best attended Annual Dinner and presentation night held at the Commercial Club. (Thanks to John and Alison Pimm )

The ‗new‘ Committee has preparations well underway for the next sailing season and you will be presented with drafts of next season‘s calendar and budget.

The Calendar will be published in the July Newsletter after ratification by this AGM.

Next Season’s Focus:  Membership recruitment and retention.

 Need volunteers!! If you‘d like to be more involved please talk to us. Committee members really would appreciate hearing from people who are able to give a little of their time to the running of the club. Even if you

5 Annual Report 2010-2011

aren‘t sure what needs to be done please let us know that you are prepared to be asked. Our new lease will have a number of new initiatives and requirements that will require input from members. Details of these will be prepared and advertised in the newsletter.

 Increase the emphasis on training and coaching (especially for beginners).

 Complete the Business Plan

 Undertake further improvements to the Clubhouse facilities

 Prepare a plan for a possible new club house.

There is plenty of enthusiasm and commitment from all of the Committee and they are looking forward to your continued support and participation in the planned events and suggestions for alternative ones if required.

Thankyous:

This has been my 10th year as Commodore and my 14th as a member of the committee. The opportunity to be part of the operation of the club for so long has been enjoyable and rewarding. I‘m delighted that I am able to step aside with the club on the ascendency. I have worked on many committees for various clubs and organisations over the years and there is no doubt that the AWYC is the best on all fronts.

I would like to acknowledge the excellent contribution from all members of the Committee. They not only ‗put in‘ but are also a great team who enjoy their sport and this club. I have thoroughly enjoyed your company.

To the spouses and families of the Committee members, your continued support, assistance and tolerance of the ‗work‘ associated with our recreation is appreciated.

My congratulations and thanks to the commodore-elect, Dave Stoffels. I am confident that we will be in very capable hands under his leadership. Dave is backed up by a very talented committee that will ensure AWYC retains its position as the premier inland club in Victoria (if not Australia!)

I would also like to acknowledge the assistance of: Caretaker, Shayne Kimball who continues to play a vital role in safeguarding our assets; Leigh Caldwell for her assistance with the newsletter; John Keane, our Starter, Stirlings Accountants for their audit services and Tony Brandt our Honorary Legal Officer.

Thanks also to major sponsors Hume Building Society and Thomson Graphipress who have made significant contributions to the club.

Finally, another big thank you to all the members who have made AWYC such a vibrant and enjoyable place to be.

Phil

What a marvellous season of sailing on Lake Hume with a full lake for the whole season and not having to make a cross-country trek down to the number two ramp. The breezes were good too, with a resail needed only twice. The conditions were perfect to hold the Valvoline Victorian Access Dinghies Championships, which included a few locals who joined AWYC and represented the club in this event.

AWYC boats have done well again this year. The TYs took the top three places in the 725 Regatta, the Rose Festival Regatta, the Noelex Country Championships and the Audi Victoria Week Regatta. Peter Kalin in Plane Sailing was first in the National TY Championships in Canberra and the top AWYC result in the Victorian TY Championships at Paynesville was a fourth to John Carlé‘s Zilzie Express, including a heat win. Sadly, I can‘t report on success in the Noelex National Championships this year as AWYC sailors had a bit of a shocker in the very fluky conditions with a surprisingly strong current through the racing area. Mitch Harris has acquired Chris Avery‘s Castle 650, so there will be formidable competition for the Noelexes in the club racing with three Castles on the water.

There might be a few TYs missing from a few races at the beginning of the 2012-2013 season with discussion about a September/October 2012 cruise from Mackay to Bowen, including the Whitsundays and several other great island groups, gathering momentum.

In the OTB monohulls, Wes Ward and Aaron Pimm in The Grey Ghost came second in the Ronstan Sail Inland Series and third in the Rose Festival Regatta; and finished mid-field in the Victorian Championships. Two other have shown vast improvement, so Wes and Aaron will have to be at their best next season.

In the Cats, we had a third in the Rose Festival Regatta and the Ronstan Sail Inland Series with John Demeo in Wear The Fox Hat. Jack Harris will be sailing an A Class regularly next season and is sure to be very competitive.

Unfortunately, AWYC didn‘t retain the Ronstan Sail Inland series, but next season should see a swing back, with a few of past good sailors returning to represent AWYC.

In this season, we did not have junior skippers sailing enough races for the Rear Commodore series, but Murray MacPherson was recognised as the most improved skipper. Several juniors were competent crew on OTB boats and TYs. The junior numbers have swelled with the Tackers program and the Basic Training program bringing many new juniors to the club – increasing from five to forty-five! (Santa will need a bigger bag). A big thanks to members who helped with both programs. Through Donald Thomson‘s initiative, several of these juniors will be sailing 4.7s next season and they will also benefit greatly from Donald‘s coaching input.

Thanks to Daryl Stone assisting a few members to familiarise themselves with the basics of the AWYC website, and it has been kept up to date with news items, feature articles, photos and results.

Thanks to everyone for their efforts on duty for our club racing. Once again, John Keane‘s efforts as starter are very much appreciated. John Demeo did a good job as race officer for the 725 Regatta and the Victorian Access Championships. The roster for duty personnel has gone well, except for the weekend for which I didn‘t include a list in the newsletter!

The racing schedule and socialising, including Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings, seem to have worked well and feedback and suggestions are always welcome. A draft of the club calendar has been included in the book of reports.

Sailability had several Saturday sessions on our sailing program again this year, thanks to Donald and Leanne Thomson with several members assisting. All members are encouraged to consider helping with this activity again next season, as the number of participants has increased markedly. We may need to seek sponsorship for a couple of new Access Dinghies, possibly the Access 303s.

I‘m looking forward to next season. Let it be a good season of racing with AWYC sailors continuing with success in major events; new members continuing to learn sailing skills; and enjoying friendly social interaction. We have had a good increase in membership in the past season, and we would still like to see more sailors enjoying our wonderful sport, good company and the AWYC facilities.

Cheers

Terry Caldwell

Peter Quigley This year we saw a significant major increase in the number of members, most significantly in the number of youth members. Membership now stands at a total of 160.

The decline in members sailing off the beach boats has been reversed and the number of boats racing has increased significantly particularly at towards the end of the season when the Laser 4.7 invasion commenced. This season has seen a greater emphasis on fun on and in the water rather than just racing and that has contributed to a very family friendly environment at the club.

To ensure the future of the club we must make sure that the interest of these young members in sailing is maintained. The future of the club continues to be dependent on the off the beach fleet which provides an entry level for new members particularly families and young people.

Many of the old boats which have been stored at the club for many years have been dusted off and are back on the water. The older boats which were beyond repair have been disposed of. The boat register included in the annual report includes the boats nominated on the membership application and those subsequently advised to the Secretary. Many of the more recently acquired boats are not included. Members need to advise the secretary of these new boats so they may be added to the register.

The Wednesday evening activities organised by John Landon continued to be a great success although with a greater emphasis on the social side of things rather than sailing.

The involvement of the Naval Cadets again provided an opportunity to introduce a new generation of young sailors to the benefits of sailing on Lake Hume.

A very successful sail training program was conducted this season which introduced a new group of keen participants to sailing and to the club.

Some members continue to be slow in paying the membership fees. This makes the administration of the club and particularly the updating of the Yachting Victoria records difficult. Membership forms will be sent out in August and should be returned before the end of September. It is also important to complete the form in full and sign the declaration before returning the form.

Elsewhere in this report, you will find the Members and Boat Register.

What a way to end the year. The Annual Dinner was attended by 101 people, 25 of whomwere under 12; and 6 others under 16. It was a fantastic sight to see all those people at this event.

This year, the galley has catered for some big events. These included Ronstan Sail Inland, HBS Rose Festival, Valvoline Access Dinghy titles, Naval titles and a wedding. Along with this it had to cater for the normal weekend obligations.

I would like to firstly thank my wife Alison for her support in the running of the galley for the year. Another big thank you should go to Andrea for her support during the big events. Also I would like to thank all those who turned up for their turn at duty every weekend. This just makes it easy for me to do more sailing.

Our profits this year will seem to be down a bit on last year, but there are a few things to remember. With the galley money we have had to purchase new equipment for the galley to run, including pizza trays and racks for those fantastic nights around the oven. The galley also supplied the winnings for the Wednesday social nights, and what a great success that has been. Even though I struggle to get there, I have enjoyed the ones where I have. The final figure will be in the Treasurer‘s Report. The club will also be buying a new freezer as the old one has become unreliable. This we should have by the start of the new season.

I would like to thank everyone for their support and look forward to their support again next year as, yes, I will be running for Rear Commodore again.

Good water levels, good winds and some good ideas - all the ingredients for a very busy season for the AWYC Publicity Officer.

Many of our combined efforts this season concentrated on supporting initiatives involving juniors and sailors with disabilities. And it was well noted by the media, as seen by the extensive coverage received in local newspapers: Midweek Express, Border Mail and especially News Weekly. NW journalist Trevor Jackson spent many hours in the crash boats this year chasing photos on the water. I hope we can continue to lure him onto the lake next season, too! And we even got the front and back pages of the Border Mail with some great photos.

I wrote twenty-one releases this year, most of which are on the AWYC website here >http:// www.awyc.yachting.org.au/news.asp which helped attract media to upcoming events as well as provide information for the papers in the week following the event.

Results were sent by the Vice-Commodore to me each Sunday night for use in a release which was sent by lunchtime each Tuesday, to fit in with newspaper deadlines.

Television stations and radio were particularly interested in the Tackers program run by Yachting Victoria and the various events we held at the club for sailors with disabilities, culminating in the 2011 Valvoline Victorian Titles for Access Dinghy.

Without outstanding support from our members, however, none of these events would have gone ahead and we would not have had the wonderful media exposure we received this year.

My special thanks should go to Donald and Leanne Thomson for their outstanding leadership in running the Sailability program which I believe is a fantastic initiative and great addition to the activities at the club. To show his enthusiasm for the project, Donald even came out midweek to complete an interview with a local ABC station which resulted in an excellent radio interview podcast, also with Mark Durnan sailing on the lake with the reporter. To hear it, go to www.abc.net.au/goulburnmurray and enter Mark Durnan in the Search (top right corner of the page).

I also thank those skippers who went beyond the call of duty and donated their time and boats, at times with great hardship as ‗backdrops‘ for the fashion photo shoot seen last year in the Border Mail. You know who you are - your hard work and diligence for this event will not go unrewarded!? You can put your eyes back in your heads now ...

This is that last year of my second stint as AWYC Publicity Officer. Many thanks to all the people who have helped me over the years in getting stories and pictures together and for spending their own time in showing journalists around and making them feel welcome. It really does make a difference if they like to come out here.

I wish the new Publicity Officer all the best for the new season and hope you receive the same great level of assistance from club members as I received, particularly this year. And let‘s hope Mother Nature is kind and we get a full lake again next year.

Now I look forward to doing some seriously serious sailing as well as cruising wonderful Lake Hume and elsewhere. With some serious study on the horizon too, looks like my weekends are full-on again!

See you on the water next season,

Wes Ward (and The Grey Ghost)

This has been the best year for juniors since I have been a member at the club. The year started with probably four juniors racing and ended with about twenty.

It was a year that we hope we can build on for juniors. Time will tell as there seem to be a lot of Laser 4.7s getting around.

This year, we had a couple of major events for the club and juniors. These were the Tackers program and the sail training program. Both have opened the club up to new members. I was able to help and participate in both programs.

Along with these two programs, I was also able to help with Sailability which I enjoy very much. Getting in the boats with the younger disabled sailors and helping them enjoy their time is a fantastic experience.

I have enjoyed my time as junior rep. I would like to thank my parents for their support and help getting to and from the club each week and to the special events. I would also like to thank those members of the club who support me and other juniors each week.

Yours in Sailing Aaron Pimm

My role as an additional General Committee member continues to evolve.

I am extremely happy to report that the Wednesday evening sailing and socialising continues to get bigger and bigger with the advent of the pizza oven we have seen upwards of 70 people at the Club on a Wednesday evening.

The idea of a member draw was also well accepted by the membership. It would be my intention to run that again this coming season with the approval of the new Committee.

The sailing side of this evening has been a bit limited (lack of wind) but I would like to run a yardstick (ie a dinghy would start first and an A class Cat last) type race with the first boat leaving the jetty area around 17.45 passing a couple of not so far away marks and finishing at the jetty an hour later. If there is some interest let me know so planning can commence, first race would be on the first Wednesday advertised in the Sailing Calendar.

Watch this space for future incentives relating to Wednesday evening social sailing and general fun.

I am starting to look at the possibility of installing a live weather web camera at the Club, with two cameras in the tower, one looking towards Tallangatta and the other towards Bethanga Bridge. The concept would be accessed via a link on our Club‘s web site.

My vision is to have the cost of the project covered by way of advertising. All we need is a PC, a couple of cameras installed and a guru to get it all going. If you are interested, get in touch so that we can proceed with appropriate approval.

With the approval of the newly elected Property Officer and assuming I retain my position on the Committee, it is my intention to take over the storage of members‘ boats at the Club, allocation invoicing, collection of fees due and the ultimate issuing to a boat a ―Storage Paid‖ sticker.

If you are reading this and have any other ideas that may be used by our Club to make life easier or more fun please contact me and I would only be to happy to have a look.

Hope to see you all in the near future.

John Landon.

In a formal document like an annual report it is appropriate to be formal and precise in the report for the year‘s activities.

WOW, WHAT A BLOODY SENSATIONAL SEASON!

The 2010/11 season has been a watershed season for Sailability Albury-Wodonga. The first session of the season gave us a cold wet day and only one person turned up to go for a sail. It was with great pleasure we watched Mark Durnan go for a sail in an Access 2.3 and actually make it look fast. Mark would go on and attend nearly every session we held and was a great source of information when it came to the racing side of Access sailing.

Next session had only four participants. I love doing this so I would turn up anyway but the risk of losing the interest of the numerous volunteers we have, called for something to be changed in the way we did things. The message of ―USE IT OR LOSE IT!‖ went out via Rob Newman and Rob began to place ads in the Border Mail promoting the next session. Change things, it did, the water came up, the sun started to shine, there were no reasons to have to cancel and we cracked 20 participants. Tackers came to town and the interest in sailing was growing. A Sailability Albury- Wodonga Facebook page was started to promote the dates and allow people to share info and this opened up another avenue to promote our sessions and gain access to a new audience.

We placed a limit of 30 sailors for a session as bookings rolled in. Too scared to knock anyone back, Rob and Leanne just kept taking bookings. The last couple of sessions were fully booked and we were flat out for the mornings. Our last Sailability Day for this season was held on Saturday 26th March. A very busy day with Life Without Barriers bringing six people and two carers and Woodstock Support bringing six teenagers (only four sailed) and three carers. The regulars all turned up as well and we had to run a time sheet to manage the boats in and out to keep track of what was going on. The ‗get into small boat training‘ was also on and there were boats and people everywhere, the busiest time at the club seemed to be a Saturday Morning!

On the same morning at 10am, we officially launched new RIB that the Commercial Club has donated to Sailability through the Clubs NSW program. Ted Landon and his wife Marj attended on behalf of the Commercial Club. Marj graciously poured some bubbly on the boat, we all said a few words, got some great photos by Trevor Jackson from News Weekly and the boat was straight back to work! This RIB is a wonderful addition to the Sailability program and proved its value during the recent ‗Valvoline‘ Access Class Victorian Titles where it was able to manoeuvre amongst the boats safely and pull up along side to offer assistance without damaging either craft.

The four Access 2.3 boats we have are now used to the maximum and the hunt is now on for more boats, to cater for greater numbers. The 303 is the next boat up in size and is a more appropriate boat for two people. Why is this important? We want to get more parents and carers out on the water as well. They only have to do it once and the smile lasts for a very long time! The desire to come back again would almost be guaranteed. If we can get carers and parents more involved they can then assist our volunteers. We have even had some parents request information about the next ‗get into small boat training‘ session so the rest of their family can learn to sail.

A major highlight for the 2010/11 season was the hosting of the 2011 ‗Valvoline‘ Victorian Access Sailing Associations Victorian Championships. This event broke all records for numbers of entries and the glowing reports after the regatta were a great boost for the numerous people who volunteered their time over that weekend. The club was awarded the Access Sailing Association of Victoria Encouragement Award at the presentation, most of which I missed unfortunately, but I was very proud to be presented with this award. Wes did a fantastic job chasing up some media support for the event and the news articles reached a very wide audience. An interview done with the ABC Radio was heard by a massive number of people, it proved so good that it was picked up and used by the Radio National network. Mark Durnan was also generous with his time before the regatta and made himself available during the week to sail a boat for us and also be interviewed, including a very special on the water report whilst taking a lovely young lady for a sail! The event brought to us a competitive side to Access Sailing not seen in this area before. It generated great interest from local participants of our program wanting to know about continuing on beyond just going for a sail.

Over this season our program has catered for 39 people who tried sailing just the once, but many showed an interest in

18 Annual Report 2010-2011

returning next season for another sail. There were 15 people who used our program on multiple occasions enjoying the sail for recreation. On top of these numbers were another four who were multiple occasion participants and showed a genuine interest in taking sailing to the next level. This totalled just fewer than 60 people who have sailed in our program over this season. On top of these numbers are the non-sailing carers, families and would-be participants who changed their mind once getting to the water‘s edge.

So what is next for Sailability Albury-Wodonga? After taking the program from nothing three years ago to its current level of usage it now needs to grow beyond a disability service and develop a pathway for some participants to enter into the mainstream activities within the Albury -Wodonga Yacht Club‘s normal racing program. This will be a challenge on many levels, but one major obstruction is the jetty facilities currently used. To integrate Sailability users into the Albury-Wodonga Yacht Club we need to be able to offer a safe way for them to get on and off the water. Replacing the current jetty facilities is a must! Assisting people in and out of the boats has become a priority issue for our volunteers and something we need to rectify before the start of the next season in October 2011. Sailability Albury-Wodonga and the Albury-Wodonga Yacht Club Committee are working towards building a more suitable jetty. We require a jetty that is location moveable for the changing water levels, extremely stable, accessible with wheelchairs and has a crane mechanism to hoist participants safely into the yachts with dignity and minimal risk of injury to those involved.

I am just one person and this program needs many to be a success. We as a club are doing a fantastic job, a job that is being noticed at the highest levels of Access Sailing, Sailability and Yachting Victoria. Thank-you to Rob Newman from CARN for his support, his efforts to help us and encourage us along the way is the backbone of this thing. Thanks to the Committee members, a fantastic bunch of guys that support this program to the end and have done a wonderful job and worked very hard this season. Thanks to every single Club member who attended and helped, be it once or every session. I hope you enjoyed your time volunteering and found that it wasn‘t a chore but that you enjoyed the experience as much as I do and as much as the participants do! Thanks to Trevor Jackson from News Weekly for his support of our program throughout the season. There were some fantastic articles and pictures in the News Weekly during the season and this positive promotion helped boost our numbers. Thankyou to the Commercial Club Albury, particularly Ted Landon and Jeff Duck for their amazing level of support, this season.

Finally I have to thank my wonderful wife Leanne. She has gotten in and helped take some of the administration load off me. This has ended up being one of the biggest reasons for our success this season. We are now better organised with a database and booking sheets. We are also easier to communicate with as she handles most of the calls and emails. Leanne also started and is the administrator of a Facebook page which many people view to check session details and book their spot on the site. I can‘t thank her enough for her help, encouragement and support. (Just quietly I think she enjoys it as much as I do!) Bring on next season!

19 Annual Report 2010-2011

Speech as delivered by Commodore Phil at the presentation night.

This award is named after David McGeachin who was a very active member of the Club in the ‗70‘s.

I recall Dave as an active and enthusiastic supporter of the club, a good sailor and great socialiser.

It is appropriate to have this award named after him.

Once again I am pleased to formally welcome David‘s wife Lynne here again tonight to present the award. David and Lynne‘s son Michael is also with us tonight. Lynne‘s support for this function is quite something in itself. This award has been a feature of the annual dinner for exactly 30 years and Lynne has missed only one of them!

This award recognises the contribution made by a member to the overall functioning and well being of the Club.

Regardless of the lean times bought on by the drought we have always had a worthy candidate for this award. This year there were several nominees that could have taken out the award.

This year it is a joint award. The recipients have a reputation for taking on tasks and ensuring they are done professionally, enthusiastically and with style to match the substance! I‘m pleased to announce that the winners this year are Donald and Leanne Thomson.

About two years ago, it was decided to re-launch the Sailability program. This was a task that was embraced enthusiastically by Donald & Leanne. The equipment was all bought up to scratch; support that was offered by CARN was taken up and approaches made to potentially interested organisations and individuals . That first season was dogged by adverse weather but still managed to garner interest and attendance. In the early stages success was measured based on a good day attracting ten participants.

With further improvements to communications such as the establishment of a Facebook page, numbers have grown and registrations of up to 50 participants plus carers has been common.

In addition, sponsorship has been pursued with outstanding success. The Valvoline Victorian Access Dinghy Championships were conducted with one of the highest attendances recorded for this sort of event. Donald and Leanne even produced a calendar that was sold out! Their attention to detail and admin processes have been first class.

Congratulations Donald and Leanne!

28 Annual Report 2010-2011

In appreciation for outstanding contributions during 2010-11. Trevor Jackson Exceptional year for good publicity Trevor has been a regular and very avid supporter of club activities. Articles are spot on; photos are always good Dean Quinlivan Mower City Albury Not a member but willing to assist and the donation of a fully restored rider mower was much appreciated. Richard Delmenico – Valvoline A major financial sponsor this year. Generous contributor to the Sailability Access Champs Ted Landon - Commercial Club He came, he saw, he acted! Another person wowed by the Sailability program. Took it to the Board of the Commercial Club and received very generous support for the new RIB that has made that program safer, healthier and more versatile than before. This combined with the other contributions to Sailability over a no. of years has been appreciated. Thomson’s Graphipress Donald & Leanne‘s business has been exceptional and very generous to the club The running of the Sailability program General admin & printing requirements such as photos, flyers and other documents Darren Keil Wodonga Sand and Soil. Materials for the pizza oven, equipment (tip trucks and Bob cat) for landscaping works John Landon Thinking outside the square award. Had an idea season before last! Wednesday evenings at the club Persisted. Initially 6-12 people. Grown to nearly 70 on the odd occasion. Demand for a winter series! David Stoffels Chief arm twister in the sponsorship seeking stakes Has access to just about every conceivable bit of garden and yard equipment imaginable Identifies the work to be done and got in and did it. Paul Ransley Quiet achiever Lost count of the various jobs he has undertaken during the year. His electronics and electrical skills 1st class; Had some issues with the welding repairs on the Tackers van but what tha‘! Andrea Clements Thank someone who does a heap behind the scenes in assisting me carry out my role and being very supportive of the efforts required Can spruce up the joint in quick time and is a dab hand in the galley!! Mark Harris At the last AGM another quiet achiever got up and said I want to build a pizza oven at the club. He was told, ―You‘re mad, but go for it.‖ He‘ll probably be a bit embarrassed at the recognition. However, that pizza and BBQ facility that Mark built (with some help and despite some help!) has been the focal point of our social activities. I think an award should probably have also gone to Kaye as she allowed him to be AWOL for weeks at a time. A truly magnificent effort and major contribution to the club. Thanks Mark.
