Abstract The new genus Longistylus of the family Nemesiidae is described from the Brazilian Cerrado. Longistylus ygapema n. sp. is recognized by the male palp with a globose bulb and a slender embolus, two times longer the palpal tibia, slightly curved retrolaterally and with no keels. Key words: Anaminae, Longistylus, Longistylus ygapema, spider taxonomy, Brazil Introduction The family Nemesiidae was proposed by Raven (1985) to include some genera transferred from Ctenizidae. To date, the family is divided in six subfamilies with 38 genera and 329 species, widely distributed worldwide (Platnick 2005). Twenty-six species from two subfamilies are presently known from Brazil: Pycnothelinae, with eight genera (Chaco Tullgren, Hermachura Mello-Leitão, Neostothis Vellard, Prorachias Mello-Leitão, Pselligmus Simon, Pycnothele Chamberlin, Rachias Simon and Stenoterommata Holmberg), and Anaminae, with two (Acanthogonatus Karsch and Hermacha Simon) (Raven 1985; Platnick 2005). In this paper we describe the new genus Longistylus, included in Nemesiidae due to the presence of two long biseriated superior claws (Goloboff 1995), absence of claw tufts, low caput, labium wider than large and apical segment of posterior lateral spinnerets triangular. Furthermore, the genus is tentatively placed in the subfamily Anaminae by the presence of whole scopulae on tarsi I–III and by the conformation of the male bulb (Raven 1985). The taxonomic placement of the genus will only be confirmed after a complete cladistic analysis, including the other genera of the family. Small b a Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Tennessee, 569 Dabney Hall, Knoxville, TN 37996, USA b Department of Botany, 437 Hesler Biology Building, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN 37996, USA Received 24 July 2004; revised 11 March 2005 Available online 22 April 2005 Abstract Intra- and interspeciWc relationships of 12 out of 13 described species as well as a potential new species in the spider genus Agelen- opsis (Araneae: Agelenidae) were analyzed using sequence data from two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and 16S ribosomal RNA. Approximately half of the species examined formed well-supported monophyletic groups, whereas the rest of the species were part of well-supported monophyletic species groups. Rather than viewing cases where species were not identiWed as being monophyletic as poor taxonomy, these cases more likely represent recent speciation and oVer insights into the process of speci- ation. The clade with the lowest levels of interspeciWc sequence divergence was found in eastern North America, whereas western spe- cies displayed much higher levels of interspeciWc divergence. These patterns appear to extend below the species level as well, with southwestern species exhibiting the highest levels of intraspeciWc sequence divergence and geographic structuring. The relationship between Agelenopsis and Barronopsis, a genus once considered a sub-genus of Agelenopsis, was also examined. The two genera are reciprocally monophyletic but more generic level sampling is needed to conWrm an apparent sister relationship between the two.

New records of 43 spider species from the Mountain Zebra National Park, South Africa (Arachnida: Araneae). Koedoe 49(2): 23–28. Pretoria. ISSN 0075-6458. Forty-three new spider species records have been added to the check list of spiders pub- lished in 1988 on the spiders of the Mountain Zebra National Park. An updated check list with information on the guilds, habitat preferences and web types are provided for the 34 families, 66 genera and 76 species presently known from the park. A total of 3.8 % of the spiders known from South Africa are presently protected in the park. Fourteen of the 34 families representing 35 species (46.1 %) are web builders and twenty-one families represented by 41 species (53.9 %) are wanderers. The Thomisidae are the most diverse family represented by 11 species. This is an inventory project of the South African National Survey of Arachnida (SANSA) for spiders in the Nama Karoo and conserved areas. Box 339, Bloemfontein 9300, South Africa Invertebrates include more than 80% of all animals, yet they are severely under-represented in studies of southern African diversity. Site biodiversity estimates that do not consider invertebrates, not only omit the greatest part of what they are attempting to measure, but also ignore major contributors to essential ecosystem processes. All available information on spider species distribution in the South African Savanna Biome was compiled. This is the largest biome in the country, occupying over one third of the surface area.A total of 1230 species represented by 381genera and 62 families are known from the biome. The last decade has seen an exponential growth in the knowledge of the group in South Africa, but there certainly are several more species that have to be discovered, and the distribution patterns of those listed are partly unknown. Information is summarized for all quarter degree squares of the biome and reveals considerable inequalities in knowledge. At a large scale the eastern region is much better surveyed than the western parts, but at smaller scales throughout the region, several areas have little information.

A total of 11 470 records from more than 900 point localities were sampled in the 6 South African Grassland Biome until the end of 2011, representing 58 families, 275 genera 7 and 792 described species. A further five families (Chummidae, Mysmenidae, Orsolobidae, 8 Symphytognathidae and Theridiosomatidae) have been recorded from the biome but are only 9 known from undescribed species. The most frequently recorded families are the Gnaphosidae 10 (2504 records), Salticidae (1500 records) and Thomisidae (1197 records). The last decade has 11 seen an exponential growth in the knowledge of spiders in South Africa, but there are 12 certainly many more species that still have to be discovered and described. The most species- 13 rich families are the Salticidae (112 spp.), followed by the Gnaphosidae (88 spp.), 14 Thomisidae (72 spp.) and Araneidae (52 spp.). A rarity index, taking into account the 15 endemicity index and an abundance index, was determined to give a preliminary indication of 16 the conservation importance of each species.
