May’s Sampler of the Month

The photograph on the left shows some of the best fun of all: playing in beautiful silk threads and linen to select the palette. I forgot to show you this last week: The latest issue of Sampler & Antique Quarterly, #63, is another have-to-have edition. It is full of wonderful articles and sampler charts. In addition to the chart for the cover sampler, the image of which first appeared in an article in the Summer 2010 issue, AND the original of which is currently on display in The Attic, thanks to our dear friend, Vickie LoPiccolo Jennett, there is also an article by Joanne Harvey, with fabulous photos, on the Mary Atwood sampler, the second-oldest documented sampler in this country to date. Additionally, there is a Quaker sampler from the Praiseworthy Stitches duo, an interesting article on “hussifs” with accompanying photos of collectibles, a sampler design from French designer Isabelle Mazabraud-Kerlan of Reflets de Soie, and, last but certainly not least, an article with accompanying photographs, “Middle Tennessee Samplers.” Our first shipment of this issue is gone, but more are on the way. And we hope you can visit The Attic and see the original “1864 EF Sampler” while we are fortunate to have it here.

Available for Pre-Order Now: New from Liberty Hill, “A Keepe Box” $39, a hand-crafted and hand-painted box to hold your beautiful threads, or other needlework treasures, being made for you now and shipping to us sometime in May. Price Correction

A classic example of why I try to remember not to quote prices until I have the invoice in hand. Last week I incorrectly priced this last in their Anniversaries of the Heart Series from Barb & Alma/Blackbird Designs, with its beautiful Bonus , at $10. BUT the correct price is $9 and next week we’ll show you our silk conversion to Belle Soie. No time this week. Where does it go? It simply seems to evaporate.

At Last Night’s Stitch-In . . .

. . . we were privileged to have Elly, Nancy, and Deanna join us from Missoula, Montana. Some of you may recognize Deanna from photos in many of your earlier needlework magazines for which Deanna served as editor, including The Needleworker, Cross Stitch & Country Crafts, Cross Stitch & Needlework, as well as working with the Treasures magazine group. The projects they were working on last night are, clockwise from above:, Elly’s iPad cover, Deanna’s now out-of-print Blackbird “Loose Feathers” design ~ and Nancy’s “Three Gables” from The Cricket Collection. It was great fun to welcome them to The Attic yesterday, where Deanna said she’d been wanting to visit for 20 years. We look forward to the next time! Also being stitched last night were Vera’s “Red 9” from Dessins DHC in shades of purple on lavender! And Jean’s ornament from last year’s Little House Needleworks series.
