SLW07710 – GRAND TASSELS WITH MULTIPLE MOULDS

ABOUT YOUR COURSE:

The most elegant tassels found in the great country houses of Europe usually comprise of a series of tassels moulds, some rolled horizontally with , and others covered vertically with and decorated with striping, snailing or nets, and with skirts hung with overbullions.

In this course we will design a tassel with multiple moulds, looking at how to plan the shapes to give a beautiful silhouette, how to place colour to give the tassel the right ‘weight’ and how to decorate the moulds to enhance the design. Cords and skirts will also be designed to co-ordinate and increase its delicacy.

This workshop will beginners, as well as those who feel confident with basic techniques and have attended a previous tassel making course with the tutor. Beginners will work in a mix of and rayon which give rich texture and colour combinations.

LEVEL: BEGINNERS/INTERMEDIATE For those with little or no experience and for those who have taken a related course. Suited to those who would like a structured introduction to a subject, with further building of skills to work towards independent practise.

ABOUT YOUR TUTOR: Anna Crutchley trained in woven and is a designer-maker of bespoke furnishing trimmings. She researches the history of tassel making, and is author of a number of popular books.

Arrival day: Thursday 15 March

From 4.00pm Arrival for residential students 6.45pm Non-residential students please arrive by 6.45pm for welcome chat and dinner 7.00pm Dinner 8.00pm – 9.00pm First teaching session – attendance is an essential part of the course.

MATERIALS FOR YOUR COURSE: We have a generously stocked shop, which opens daily from 8.30am–2pm. For any materials you need to purchase from the shop, we suggest you do so during the first morning of your course, after having discussed with your tutor.

Additional charge: The tutor will bring tassel moulds and yarns to use. As a guide the largest multiple moulds set costs around £18 and yarns for one large tassel £8 – £10 depending on the size of the tassel. The cost of what you use must be paid to Anna before the end of the course, by cash or cheque.

Available from the Shop: 1 small tube of Evo-stick Impact Adhesive (Uhu or Bostick clear glue is also suitable, but not PVA-based white glue) and coloured pencils (if you have them)

Available from the tutor: Prepared linen and rayon warps ready for use Tassel moulds Suitable yarns 4-hook twisters (these are available to use during the course)

Please bring any of the above, if you have them, and in addition: Long (i.e. around 6cm) needles A needle around 5mm in diameter Sharp – large and small Wire snips and round nose pliers (only if you already have them) A ruler and A hair comb A notebook, and a camera if you like to document processes this way

HEALTH AND SAFETY: The tutor instructs students in health and safety issues relevant to this course. There are no health and safety restrictions on access to this studio/teaching space in the absence of the tutor. All Personal Protection Equipment, apart from footwear, is provided by the College.
