    1 Dronfield Neighbourhood Plan Community Consultation Drop-in Events – Indicative Findings August 2017 Dronfield Neighbourhood Plan – Findings from Community Consultation Events – Aug 2017 2 Introduction to Dronfield Dronfield is a large parish in North East Derbyshire in the north midlands region of England. It comprises the three communities of Dronfield, Dronfield Woodhouse and Coal Aston interspersed with large areas of open countryside. It is sited in the valley of the small River Drone, and lies between the town of Chesterfield and the city of Sheffield. Dronfield covers an area of 3,457 acres (13.99 km2) and has as neighbours the villages and hamlets of Unstone, Holmesfield, Barlow, Apperknowle, Hundall, Marsh Lane and Eckington. In the 2011 census, Dronfield Parish had 9,388 dwellings and a population of 21,261, of whom 10,333 were male and 10,928 female. 25.1% of the population were aged 65 or over (compared to 16.4% for England as a whole), and 16.1% were under the age of 16 (18.9% for England). The Survey The Dronfield Town Council carried out four community consultation drop-in events to assist in the preparation of the Dronfield Town Neighbourhood Plan and North East Derbyshire Local Plan. The Town Council is keen to engage with the community, and the survey was conducted during March 2017. A series of questionnaires were produced on a number of key topics: Green Belt & Open Spaces Community Heritage Economy Housing Transport All the questions relating to the above topics were open-ended, asking for people’s comments.     Dronfield Town Neighbourhood Plan Draft Housing Characteristics Report April 2017 Prepared by AndrewTowlertonAssociates DRONFIELD TOWN NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS Introduction This report provides an assessment of housing characteristics in the Parish of Dronfield. It draws on the latest available data, at the time of writing, from the Census, Land Registry and Office for National Statistics, small area model-based income estimates, North East Derbyshire District and others as well as the findings from local consultation exercises. Its primary aim is to help the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, the Town Council and others better understand local housing need and characteristics to inform and support policies in the neighbourhood plan. It should be stressed that it provides an assessment of housing needs and characteristics. Its findings should be viewed as providing guidance prepared in good faith and based on the best available evidence, as national planning policy guidance states, “establishing housing need is not an exact science, and no single approach will provide a definitive answer1”. Population Age Profile According to the 2011 Census, Dronfield Town had an estimated population of 21,261 residents living in 9,267 households dispersed across 1,396 hectares. There were 121 vacant dwellings representing a 1.3% vacancy rate. In addition, it contained five communal establishments providing accommodation for 140 residents. Since 2001 the number of residents living in the Parish is estimated to have fallen by around 0.3% (69 people) whereas the number of dwellings (occupied and vacant) went up by 227 (2.5%). 16% of residents were aged under 16 which is in line with the District (North East Derbyshire) rate but lower than the Regional (East Midlands) (18%) and National (England) (19%) rates.

When I started preserving the history of a few of the collieries and Ironworks that I came across, namely Barlow Monkwood and The Arkwright Adelphi, little did I know how many others I would come across in the fullness of time. As I worked with the „Back to the Future Group‟ at Arkwright to preserve the history of the village and in my case the Adelphi Ironworks before the bulldozers moved on the opencast site, the list of collieries I wanted to know about grew. I thought that I would be able pluck a book off the shelves at the library and find out who owned and worked the old collieries shown on the local Ordnance Survey maps and mentioned in the Derbyshire Times and Derbyshire Courier. Unfortunately the book does not exist. There is a little information available on older Derbyshire collieries so I have set out to catalogue and document this information and expand on it to the neglect of the larger collieries which have had many books written about them. I make no apologies for my neglect of the newer, larger collieries. I have tried to outline areas of mining along with individual mines; I have also tried to find where they were by extracting a grid reference for as many of the individual mines as was possible. The Coal Authority at Mansfield has the Abandonment plans for most, but not all collieries since 1850 but these do not give one the full picture.
