Although the intensity of the efforts varied greatly, place name change would continue through the end of the Ottoman Empire and on into the Republic of Turkey. By 1968, when a volume containing all the changes was published by the Interior Ministry, roughly thirty percent of settlement names in Turkey had been changed. Renaming continued sporadically until the 1990s. This thesis inquires into these attempts at name change in Turkey with a focus on how people responded to the changes in their everyday lives. The value of place names as formulated in human and cultural geography is explored in order to determine why people may have rejected or accepted the state imposed names. Place name change, rather than being approached solely as a nation-building project motivated by Turkification, is also considered as being a technique of governmentality.

SACRED RITUALS AT A CHEPNI VILLAGE IN WESTERN ANATOLIA Sinan Çaya1 1Marmara University, Turkey ABSTRACT This article basically contains some information translated from a (Turkish-originated) French scholar’s ethnographic work. It is about the descendants of previously-nomadic Turkoman tribe of Chepnis, in Western Anatolia. Those people preserved most of their authentic social structure even after becoming sedentary. Their social dynamic impetus itself drives its force from the venerated Anatolian version of Shiism. Since the vast majority of Anatolian soil belongs to the Sunnite interpretation of Islamic tradition; Chepnis and similar closed communities had a hard time throughout the Ottoman history. Keywords: Chepni, Turkoman, Qizilbash, Shiite, Belief, Creed, Nomad. Received: 27 May 2014/ Revised: 11 April 2015/ Accepted: 16 April 2015/ Published: 20 April 2015 Contribution/ Originality This study is one of very few studies which investigate the Qizilbash communities of Anatolia in contemporary times. Such scientific works are indeed not many in number even in Turkish, the language of the mentioned people. It is a fact that the Sunnite majority despised those people or at best ignored their spiritual aspects. No doubt this negative general attitude have dissuaded a tendency to investigate the communities, on the part of social scholars themselves. Word of mouth was widespread ― (usually in a discrediting manner, too― but one can not claim that stuff which had been printed on sheer paper amounts to substantial volumes.

Between Host-Countries and Homeland: Institutions, Politics and Identities in the Post-Genocide Armenian Diaspora (1920s to 1980s) by Vahe Sahakyan A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Near Eastern Studies) in the University of Michigan 2015 Doctoral Committee: Professor Kevork B. Bardakjian, Chair Associate Professor Carol B. Bardenstein Emeritus Professor Gerard J. Libaridian Associate Professor Ara Sanjian, University of Michigan - Dearborn Professor Ronald G. Suny Professor Khachig Tölölyan, Wesleyan University ©Vahe Sahakyan 2015 To my parents ii Acknowledgments The completion of this project owes much to a large number of scholars, academics and intellectuals, friends and family members. My academic journey in diaspora studies began due to my training as a sociologist at Yerevan State University, Armenia. My sociological curiosity was quick to capture the significant differences in how Armenianness was experienced and expressed in the diaspora, when I first encountered third-fourth generation Armenian-Americans upon my arrival at the University of Michigan as a Junior Faculty Development Program visiting scholar in Fall 2004. This generous grant I was awarded by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs provided me a possibility to spend a year at one of the leading American universities, where my interest in Armenian diasporic identities and institutions took shape. Frequent and often endless conversations with Kevork Bardakjian and Gerard Libaridian provided additional impetus to my curiosity. It was due to their continued encouragement and support that two years after returning to Armenia I finally decided to apply and was admitted to the Ph.D.

  • Heterodox Tribes of Asia Minor
BT UC-NRLF 703 H37 c 2 b 7L4 763 MAIN y* 3-r "70^ 310 From: Royal Anthropological Institute. Journal. V. 51, pp. # 310-342 HETERODOX TRIBES OF ASIA MINOR. 1 the late F. W. By jHasluck. I. § 1. Introductory. Professor von Luschan, in his Huxley lecture on Early Inhabitants of Asia Minor? has done much to bring order into our ideas of the still insufficiently known ethno- logical and religions divisions of that country. His studies are based mainly on his personal observations, and his point of view is for the most part that of a physical anthropologist. His predecessors in field work, dealing generally with narrower areas, have produced a great mass of literature, scattered or in some cases difficult of access, and no serious attempt has been made to approach the problems involved from the historical side. It therefore seems worth while at this stage to bring together the scattered material of explorers and collate with it such historical information as may be gleaned from pointed sources, with the object of presenting in one view a summary of the facts at our disposal and the problems they suggest for the investigation of future explorers in the history, and particularly the religious history, of Anatolia. European travellers in Asia Minor, mainly classical archaeologists and very seldom orientalists, are generally better acquainted with Christianity than with Islam. Consequently, the divisions of the Christians are more obvious to them than those of the Mahommedan populations. By most the latter are regarded as a single whole, and any divergence they may notice from orthodox Sunni practice suggests to them that the population in question has been affected by Christianity, that is, it represents an originally Christian population half-converted to Islam.
