In the Name of Krishna: The Cultural Landscape of a North Indian Pilgrimage Town A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Sugata Ray IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Frederick M. Asher, Advisor April 2012 © Sugata Ray 2012 Acknowledgements They say writing a dissertation is a lonely and arduous task. But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being.

Using concepts and methods taken from material culture studies as well as from art history, Ray proposes reciprocal relations among the earth’s changing environment, ecological transformations brought about by the ways humans have lived upon the land and sea, and “theology, art practice, and an aesthetics of the natural world” (p. 20). As a case study, Ray has chosen the region of Braj in north India, first, because of repeated, disastrous droughts and famines in north India that seem to have been particularly severe from the mid-sixteenth century to the early eighteenth century, and second, because in the same period Gaudiya Vaishnavas made the whole region of Braj a sacred landscape. In the 1540s, about a decade earlier than the first severe recorded famine of the Little Ice Age, Gaudiya Vaishnava scholars residing in Braj began producing theologies of what Barbara Holdrege has called Krishna’s “mesocosmic embodiment” in the locality as a whole.

The trees here fulfill all desires, and the waters of immortality flow through land made of philosopher’s stone. • Nectar Lyrics
NECTAR TRACK 1: RADHA REMIX Bolo Radha Ramana Hari Bol Sing to Lord Hari, who is playful and amorous, dear to His beloved consort Radha, the embodiment of love and bliss. Radha, Radha, Radha, Radha Radhe, Radhe, Radhe, Radhe, Bolo Shree Krishna Govinda Hare Murare Sing to Krishna, cow herding boy, incarnation of Lord Vishnu, holder of the flute, emanating waves of Supreme Consciousness and Light. Singing to Radha, we become Radha, the Goddess, the most intimate companion of lord Krishna, the manifestation of divine love. We wear the mantel of Radha’s “Rasa”, or nectar, and envelope ourselves in Her moods of longing and union, longing and union. We meet our beloved late at night in the grove of our heart, and we lose ourselves in that meeting. Radhe Radhe. The word resonates from every street corner, every man, and every woman in the town of Vrindavan, where Radha eternally lives. Forgetting our names, and the bindings of our lives and personalities, upon hearing Krishna’s flute we instantly transform into Radha, the beloved of our beloved, the secret lover within. TRACK 2: OPENING THE GATES Ram Ram Siya Ram Siya Ram Mei Saba Jaga Janee Karahun Pranama Jyoda Juga Pani Invoking the Divine Couple. Goddess Sita and Lord Ram; whose very name is most sacred and pure Hail to the Divine couple, Goddess Sita and Lord Ram who dwell in the entire universe and all of creation; eternally luminous and shining as celestial moonlight. We humbly bow with folded palms at Your lotus feet. An offering, an invocation, a supplication, that the gates of the holy temple within be opened, and that we may enter.

  • Lord Krishna – Childhood Stories
Lord Krishna – Childhood Stories Lord Krishna‟s life is associated with a lot of interesting & instructive events. He is one of the most popular divine heroes. Here are a few interesting tales associated with Krishna‟s life: The Story of Krishna & Putana Kansa, the evil uncle of Krishna had told Putana-the female demon, to kill baby Krishna. Putana disguised herself as a cowherdess & went to Gokul. After killing many babies by feeding them with her poisoned milk, she entered Krishna‟ house. Krishna knew her real form . He sucked so hard that he extracted Putana‟s life along with the milk. Before dying ,Putana assumed her original form & died. The Gopis with Rohini and Yasoda came rushing to the spot and took up the child, which was playing fearlessly on the body of Putana who was freed from her sins as she had offered to give milk to the Lord. So no matter how powerful evil is, it always gets defeated by the Good. Kindergarten – Krishna Childhood Stories Page 1of 17 Overturning of the Cart The ceremony observed on the child being able to stand on his legs, and the birthday ceremony was observed together. There was a great feast at the house of Nanda. After completion of the bath, Yasoda found that her child closed His eyes in sleep and so she put Him to bed under a cart which contained vessels full of milk and curd. After some time, the child opened His eyes and cried for His milk. As Yasoda was busily engaged in receiving her guests, she did not hear Sri Krishna‟s cry.
