Hosted by the Brooklyn, Borough President, the event featured speeches by local dignitaries and faith leaders, prayers by Hindu priests, and bhajans/kirtans by youth of ISKCON and United Madrassi Association. More than 150 guests, including officials from many local and state government agencies participated in the event. A sumptuous vegetarian meal was prepared by ISKCON and distributed freely to all participants. Govardhan Puja Our community came together to offer their hearts and culinary talents to our beloved Giriraj! A record number of preparations were made, including doughnuts from the doughnut plant, a cake made by Sunita and so many other delicious delights. Our Govardhan Hill was expertly made by Jaya Radhe devi dasi and her team; Antaryami das, Manjulali dasi and Bhaktin Yana decorated the hill, whilst Premedhana das and Ganesh created the base, and surround. A new dress skillfully made and sponsored by Antaranga Mataji, was presented to our deities. This festival celebrates the diversity of Krsna and His devotees, and the symbiotic nature of Govardhan that brings all God's children together under one roof, and what better way than to celebrate than with a mountain of maha prasadam! 2 The day that follows Srila Prabhupada's Govardhan Puja is always a disappearance day day of mixed emotions, as we simultaneously celebrate and commemorate the life of Srila Prabhupada. It is a day where by looking towards the past we can become surcharged to push this movement into the future; by hearing the offerings and accounts of the senior devotees, what inspired them and touched their hearts, we become evermore touched by Srila Prabhupada's magnanimous mercy and feel the heartfelt desire to spread Krishna Consciousness. A day that brings everyone together, this year was no less. Parvati mataji, a sweet devotee who we had not seen for some years, lovingly sponsored and made an outfit for the deities. In the Name of Krishna: The Cultural Landscape of a North Indian Pilgrimage Town A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Sugata Ray IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Frederick M. Asher, Advisor April 2012 © Sugata Ray 2012 Acknowledgements They say writing a dissertation is a lonely and arduous task. But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being.

Using concepts and methods taken from material culture studies as well as from art history, Ray proposes reciprocal relations among the earth’s changing environment, ecological transformations brought about by the ways humans have lived upon the land and sea, and “theology, art practice, and an aesthetics of the natural world” (p. 20). As a case study, Ray has chosen the region of Braj in north India, first, because of repeated, disastrous droughts and famines in north India that seem to have been particularly severe from the mid-sixteenth century to the early eighteenth century, and second, because in the same period Gaudiya Vaishnavas made the whole region of Braj a sacred landscape. In the 1540s, about a decade earlier than the first severe recorded famine of the Little Ice Age, Gaudiya Vaishnava scholars residing in Braj began producing theologies of what Barbara Holdrege has called Krishna’s “mesocosmic embodiment” in the locality as a whole.

  • Free Writes Readings Jayadvaita Swami and I Took Turns for Two Days, Reading out Loud from Caitanya-Caritamrta, Madha-Lila Chapt
1 Free Write Journal #61 Free Writes Readings Jayadvaita Swami and I took turns for two days, reading out loud from Caitanya-caritamrta, Madha-lila Chapter 10, “Lord Caitanya Returns to Jagannatha Puri.” The devotees like rivers flowed into the ocean of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, to visit or stay with him. Bhavananda Raya came with four of his five sons. Lord Caitanya praised him for having a jewel of a son in Ramananda Raya. Bhavananda Raya gives his son Vaninatha Raya to stay with Lord Caitanya and render Him personal service. Govinda, the disciple of Isvara Puri and Lord Caitanya’s Godbrother, arrives. He said that at the time his spiritual master was passing away, he ordered Govinda to go join Lord Caitanya and become His personal bodily servant. Caitanya Mahaprabhu happily accepted Govinda on the order of Isvara Puri. Brahmananda Bharati arrived wearing a deerskin, and Lord Caitanya refused to recognize him for wearing the deerskin to get false prestige. Brahmananda Bharati realized his mistake, changed to sannyasa clothes, and was warmly received by the Lord. They engaged in mock debate, and Lord Caitanya kept Brahmananda Bharati with Him in Jagannatha Puri. Advaita Acarya and the devotees in Navadvipa received word that the Lord had returned from His tour of 2 South India, and they jubilantly prepared to visit Him in Nilacala. As we read, Jayadvaita Maharaja and I noticed a few editing mistakes, and he noted them down for a future edition. The time spent reading passed quickly and blissfully. Jayadvaita Maharaja is going next to London. He has picked up a new assistant since his last visit there.

THE ENDURING SELF: EXPLORING THE IDENTITY OF THE HARE KRISHNA DEVOTEES BEYOND RACE, LANGUAGE AND CULTURE by S.M. Ramson Student number: 205519769 A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Master of Arts Degree (Religion and Social Transformation) In the School of Religion and Theology Faculty of Humanities University of Kwazulu Natal JOINT PROMOTERS: Professor P. Kumar Professor R. Sookrajh January 2006 i DECLARATION I, do hereby declare that this dissertation, which is submitted to the university for the degree of Master of Arts (Religion and Social Transformation), has not been previously submitted by me for a degree at any other university, and all the sources I have used or quoted have been indicated and acknowledged by means of a complete reference. S.M. Ramson Researcher Professor P. Kumar Professor R. Sookrajh ii DEDICATION This research is dedicated to His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (The Hare Krishna Movement) who in the face of extreme difficulty presented the Gaudiya Vaisnava science of Self Realization and devotion to the Western world, whose courage, insights, perspicacity, purity and love forms the example that I wish to pursue. iii ACKNO WLEDGEMENTS It does not take the stance of a social scientist to understand that one of the enduring features of social dynamics amongst humans is the ability to extend themselves selflessly, and sometimes, even with great effort make sacrifices simply for the progress of others. There is no scale on which I can rate such benefaction, except to understand that I am overwhelmed by a sense of gratitude to several individuals to whom I wish to sincerely express my heartfelt appreciation.

  • A Newly Discovered Insertion for Bhagavad-Gita As It Is (What Should We Do with It?)
A newly discovered insertion for Bhagavad-gita As It Is (What should we do with it?) By Jayadvaita Swami (June 29, 2011) Summary In a manuscript page for Bhagavad-gita As It Is given to the Bhaktivedanta Archives within the last year or so, we have discovered a sentence – a strong comment – handwritten by Srila Prabhupada for insertion but somehow left out of the book. Now that we have found it, what should we do with it? The BBT welcomes thoughtful comments. What did we find? Going through some items acquired within the last year or so by the Bhaktivedanta Archives, I came upon a manuscript page for Bhagavad-gitaAs It Is I had never seen before. And on the page was an insertion, in Srila Prabhupada’s handwriting, that never got into the book. The page (included at the end of this file) gives the full text for chapter 10, text 36. As published in both the first and second editions, here’s how the translation reads: I am also the gambling of cheats, and of the splendid I am the splendor. I am victory, I am adventure, and I am the strength of the strong. And here is the first paragraph of the purport (again the same for both editions): There are many kinds of cheaters all over the universe. Of all cheating processes, gambling stands supreme and therefore represents Krsna. As the Supreme, Krsna can be more deceitful than any mere man. If Krsna chooses to deceive a person, no one can surpass Him in His deceit.
