LENTEN REGULATIONS TABERNACLE CANDLE 1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States.

2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly.

3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be At St. Elizabeth Ann Seton: considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act John Raffa of penance or charity.

6. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law.

7. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions, or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation. ST. RAPHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

ARING IVING ERVING As we enter into the season of Lent, we members of St. Raphael the Archangel Parish join with the entire Church family in acts of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Our connection to all Catholics seems especially strong as we begin Ash Wednesday sprinkled with ashes, abstain from meat each Friday, and attend special devotions at our own and other parishes. The thread tying our one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church together across time and place can be illustrated by an Apostolic Father of the Church, St. Polycarp, whose feast we observe on Tuesday, February 23. St. Polycarp was a disciple of the beloved Apostle, St. John. He served as a Bishop in Asia Minor and was martyred for his Christian faith in the year 155 AD. It is hard to imagine what life and the Church were like so long ago and far away, yet the life of St. Polycarp exemplifies characteristics that are key to our Christian identity, and which our newly established parish should strive to emulate. A parish, especially a new one rebounding from a pandemic, needs to be hospitable. As services and events hopefully can open up more when covid-19 is better controlled, we will welcome back those who have not been attending Mass for health and safety reasons as well as visitors, new members, and those who have been estranged from the Church. St. Polycarp modeled hospitality, even to his enemies. He invited the police who came to arrest him into his lodging and served them supper before being taken captive! Another facet of gradually reopening will be opportunities to grow in and share our faith in small groups and educational programs. St. Polycarp was taught by one of Christ’s original 12 apostles. He then made it his mission to teach others, including St. Iranaeus. As Catholic Christians, the center of our community life is the Celebration of the Eucharist. Although our livestream is a blessing in desperate times, it cannot replace real reception of the Blessed Sacrament. St. Polycarp worked with the pope on meeting the special needs of the Church in Asia Minor, and he was given the honor of celebrating the Eucharist in the Papal Church. We look forward to being able to welcome safely all who hunger for the Eucharist, and eventually to be able to take the Eucharist to our homebound and facility-bound members. It is beautiful and exciting to be members of a new parish. It is awe-inspiring to be members of the Catholic Church, united in the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ through time, place, and eternity. St. Polycarp, pray for us!

Take part on our vigil day:

Join our St. Raphael the Archangel Parish family during Lent at the annual vigil outside Planned Parenthood. Our parish has pledged to pray between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24. We witness and pray peacefully for innocent preborn babies to have a chance to live, for women in crisis pregnancies to have the support they need to choose life, and for our government and society to work toward a culture of life in which the most vulnerable members are cherished and loved as our Creator loves them. We need to fill the entire four hour shift, and any amount of time you can give is appreciated. Please contact Laura at (412) 857-5356 or [email protected] to sign up for a time.

If you cannot attend our parish vigil, you can learn more and/or sign up for another time by visiting the Pittsburgh campaign:

ST. MARGARET OF SCOTLAND SCHOOL

CLASSROOM CHRONICLES Each week we will highlight the amazing things that are going on in our classrooms here at St. Margaret of Scotland School.

MRS. OLGA KAISER – KINDERGARTEN: Kindergarten has been working hard learning new things and having fun. In science we learned that molecules are a group of atoms bonded together. We put this to the test by placing a candy cane in a container of warm water, cold water, and vinegar. The result was the candy cane dissolved quickly in the warm water, concluding heat breaks the bond quickly.

We learned about living and non-living and categorizing items into those categories. We helped our bird friends with their nutrients by making bird feeders. The birds must have loved it because they ate everything! The children learned about Penguins, the flightless bird. They made their own penguin and showed it off with a Penguin Parade. They added a hockey stick with their penguin to show support for the Pittsburgh Penguins!

We took advantage of the snow and made a snow volcano. We mixed an acid (vinegar) and a base (baking soda) which then produced a gas called carbon dioxide. The gas was fizzy and bubbly and so much fun.

After reading the story "Snowmen at Night" the children discussed what they would have their snowman do at night. To conclude the activity, they made an edible snowman. It was cute and yummy.

We are working hard in Math with counting to 100, place values, and adding to 10. The world of reading is so exciting, and we are trying to read everything.

SCHOOL MERGER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

With an understanding that changes to a school carry deep and emotional impact, we offer these questions and answers to help create a better understanding of the reasons for the necessary change.

Why is this happening?

Over the past fifty years, the regional population has dropped by about 30%. As a result, student population in public, private and our Catholic schools has reflected this trend. In addition, fewer Catholics and the increased cost of operating Catholic schools has meant higher tuition and unsustainable parish subsidies, which has also contributed to a steep decline in the student population.

Both St. Philip and St. Margaret of Scotland Schools population declined over 20% in the past few years. The South Regional Catholic Elementary Schools (SRCES) Board of Directors projects that the subsidy from St. Philip Parish and St. Raphael Parish would continue to increase at an unsustainable amount on the current path of the two schools.

In July of 2020, Bishop David Zubik established SRCES and its governing board of directors to look closely at these serious issues and develop a plan for the accessibility, affordability, and sustainability of Catholic education in the southern portion of the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

How did each community share in the decision?

Immediately upon the constitution of the SRCES governing board, Fr. Poecking, president of the board, met with the pastors, Fr. Robert Grecco and Fr. James Torquato, to begin a discussion regarding the future of the two schools. Over the next several months, at multiple meetings, large groups of parish and school representatives met with the pastors and the board. Both pastors consistently spoke to the needs of their parish communities including those of the school families. They also represented their parishes abilities to financially support the school.

A full summary of the process and extensive financial, demographic, and consultative documentation was shared with the board in preparation for and prior to its December board meeting.

How was the decision made?

In December, during an extended meeting, the SRCES Board of Directors deliberated concerning the extensive data and consultation process. At that time, the board voted to recommend that the two schools merge. At the January meeting, the board selected the former St. Margaret of Scotland School as the main campus of the newly emerging school.

What happens next?

With the decision made, we can now begin the exciting work of coming together to build sustainable Catholic education for our children through our newly merged school.

The regional administrator, Sharon Loughran Brown, will oversee the next steps which include forming an implementation committee to assist in gathering input from their respective school communities to inform decisions, identifying the enrollment process for the new school, and publicizing a tuition policy.

The implementation committee will have its first meeting in the very near future and will continue until a school advisory council is named. The implementation committee will also participate in the hiring process for the principal with the regional administrator and the Director of Catholic Schools. The existing diocesan process for the hiring of principals will be followed, including the internal posting of the position.

The principal of the newly merged school, once named, will select the faculty and determine the 2021-22 programming.

There will be several opportunities to get involved, starting with a request for you to join us in prayer for the success of the St. Elizabeth and St. Gabriel consolidated school. We also invite you to direct any questions to the SRCES office at [email protected].
