Bibliografia Del Centenario Teresiano Teresianum 34 (1983/2) 355-451 BIBLIOGRAFIA DEL CENTENARIO TERESIANO Una de las posibles medidas que puede aplicarse a un acontecimiento como el del IV Centenario de la muerte de Santa Teresa de Jesús (1582- 1982) es la de verificar la producción que ha suscitado; más aún tratán­ dose de un personaje que interesa tanto a la historia y literatura espa­ ñolas, como a la espiritualidad cristiana. La revista Teregianum, antes Ephemerides Carmeliticae, inauguraba su nueva etapa con un número extraordinario que abarca todo el año 1983, dedicado por completo a la Santa de la que toma nombre la Facultad de Espiritualidad de Roma, dirigida por los Carmelitas Descalzos; ella viene a ser el órgano ofi­ cial de su expresión científica *. Ahora, quiere ofrecer esta panorámica bibliográfica como culmen de tal efeméride, consciente de prestar así un servicio a cuantos siguen con interés los estudios en torno a la Santa de Avila2. 1. Una larga efeméride Queriendo precisar el alcanze de esta conmemoración no se pueden fijar unos límites estrechos de coincidencia matemática con el suceso histórico recordado: la muerte de Teresa de Jesús, en Alba de Tormes, el 4 de octubre de 1982. Este centenario ha sido una ocasión esperada, preparada con ilusión desde amplios sectores, anticipada un año en el tiempo que le correspondía y prolongada, para dar oportunidad a que fuera la presencia del Papa Juan Pablo II quien le concluyera. Ya en el año 1979, el Capítulo General ordinario del Carmelo Tere- siano se fijaba en el próximo acontecimiento e incluía unas determina­ ciones al respecto3. Mucho antes de la declaración de la Conferencia Episcopal Española, que ocurrió el 22 de febrero de 1980 s, era también frecuente oir hablar con cariño al obispo de Avila, Felipe Fernández, del centenario teresiano, para el cual lograría después un serio compromiso de toda la diócesis. Todo esto lo recordamos aquí para decir que no ha sido un suceso que se presentó inesperadamente, sino algo previsto y preparado en todas sus vertientes y consecuencias. No obstante, se han de retener como fechas principales estas dos que marcan la celebración de la Iglesia Católica: Apertura: 14.10.1981, en Alba de Tormes (Salamanca) por el cardenal Anastasio Ballestrero, arzobispo de Turin y Legado Pontificio6. Clausura: 1.11.1982, en Avila y Alba de Tormes, por el Papa Juan Pablo I I 7. Estas fechas se han de entender como las del marco cronológico para España, Europa, Oriente y USA; América Latina decidió celebrarlo en su coincidencia natural, es decir, de octubre-1982 a octubre-1983, lo que nos obliga a considerarlo como un acontecimiento que ha superado las bar­ reras temporales de un « año-centenario ». 2. Resultados y contrastes No pretendemos trazar una valoración global de todo lo que ha su­ puesto el centenario, trabajo que ya ha empezado a hacerse8; nos man­ tenemos siempre en el ámbito de los estudios teresianos, para lo cual resaltaremos algunos detalles que ayuden a comprender el significado de los títulos aquí recogidos. En la tradición de los centenarios teresianos y sanjuanistas éste ha sido, sin duda, el que ha gozado de más documentos procedentes del magisterio papal y en el que más ha participado directamente. Es una consecuencia del reconocimiento eclesial al mensaje teresiano que efec­ tuara Pablo V I en el año 1970, nombrándola Doctora de la Iglesia. En este sector de las intervenciones papales, habría que incluir ade­ más las resonancias del acontecimiento en sus visitas a monasterios car­ melitanos, audiencias, etc.9. En esta ocasión, santa Teresa ha tenido la suerte de contar con un Papa familiarizado con sus obras y las de san Juan de la Cruz. Un juicio semejante hay que hacer sobre la actuación e intervención del centro de la Orden: nunca había estado tan comprometido ni había hecho tantas declaraciones sobre la incidencia de la ocasión conmemo­ rativa en la vida del Carmelo. 4 Cf. BIBLIOGRAFIA DEL CENTENARIO TERESIANO 357 Como constatación más universal, reconocida por todos, habría que resaltar el enorme esfuerzo catequético y divulgativo que se ha efectuado con motivo de este centenario para dar a conocer y hacer accesible el mensaje teresiano. Esto será útil tenerlo en cuenta a la hora de consi­ derar el valor real de cuanto se ha escrito. En este sentido, ha sido un centenario popular, no porque se haya volcado en manifestaciones exter­ nas, concentraciones, o actos de exaltación, sino porque se ha ido directa­ mente en busca del testimonio de la experiencia espiritual teresiana in­ terpretándola para el cristiano de hoy. De esta lectura teresiana se han aprovechado amplios sectores de la Iglesia, incluso el mundo juvenil. La apreciación ha de ser matizada cuando se habla de la investi­ gación teresiana en sus diversos niveles, pues aparecen resultados de signo más variado. Se ha caminado más y mejor en la dimensión histórica de la figura concreta de Teresa de Jesús: tiempo, ascendencia, reformas contemporá­ neas, personajes, etc. Posiblemente el libro más valioso desde esta pers­ pectiva haya sido el del Instituto Histórico Teresiano de Roma sobre la muerte y el cuerpo de la Santa (n. 345). El aspecto doctrinal nunca ha sido el más descuidado; ahora se cuenta con varias síntesis que han superado presentaciones tradiciona­ les; pero, que no nos engañe el número de títulos ni la amplitud de temáticas, porque en bastantes casos no se trata más que de reediciones, arreglo de estudios anteriores. De todos modos los grandes pasos dados en años anteriores al centenario pudiera ser que hayan contribuido a disminuir el esfuerzo. Algo que llama la atención y deja sin satisfacer los deseos de muchos que consideraban ésta la gran ocasión a aprovechar, es la poca atención prestada al « texto» teresiano: no hemos contado con ninguna edición « nueva» de sus obras completas; se trata siempre de reediciones. Ni siquiera hemos podido tener la esperada edición facsímil de los manus­ critos autógrafos teresianos, aunque de ello se hablaba10. El juicio se ha de completar hablando de las traducciones a lenguas modernas, donde se cuenta con novedades importantes como las ediciones italiana, inglesa y sueca, todas aún en curso de completar. Con estas brevísimas pinceladas queremos situar en su justo punto la abundante bibliografía, queriendo evitar el entusiasmo fácil, ignorando lo que realmente se puede considerar aportación o lo que es sencillamente una reposición. Para orientar al interesado, queremos ofrecer una lista de todas las revistas, de carácter más o menos científico, que han dedicado números especiales a santa Teresa con motivo del centenario: Angelicum 59 (1982) n. 3 Boletín del Museo e Instituto « Camón Aznar ». Límites y metodología Finalmente, antes de dar la bibliografía, recordamos las líneas a las que nos hemos atenido para su elaboración. El trabajo hecho no pretende ser una bibliografía exhaustiva, puesto que a la hora de elaborarla el centenario sigue abierto en América latina y porque voluntariamente hemos prescindido de elementos que pertene­ cen más bien al ambiente periodístico, de divulgación popular o de cró­ nicas muy particulares. Para llegar a conocer aspectos más menudos, habrá que esperar a que se publiquen las bibliografías de los años 1981- 1983 en las revistas Archivum Bibliográphicum Carmelitanum y Carmelus. Pero sí que está recogida aquí la bibliografía más importante y decisiva de este centenario. Cronológicamente, los límites son del 1981 al 1er semestre de 1983, aunque se encontrará material del 1980 debido a que efectivamente se publicó en 1981, o porque miraba ya al próximo centenario. En cuanto a presentación y siglas usadas, seguimos la metodología de la Bibtiographia Internationalis Spiritualitatis.

There is also an increasing number of press articles being published worldwide challenging the validity of the C14 dating of 1988 from several points of view. It is good to see that reputable journals are now publishing these and even some newspapers are taking a quite sensible view of the vast evidence which contradicts the C14 findings despite their lust for a scandal-like story of a fake. To follow my opening statement I am pleased to note that a very significant international conference has been arranged in Bologna, Italy in May of this year under the title La Sindone E Le Icone (The Shroud and Iconography). The programme will include papers from experts from many countries and amongst others are Ian Wilson (England), Paul Maloney and Alan Whanger (USA),Heinrich Pfeiffer and Werner Bulst (Germany), Andre Dubarle (France), Mario Moroni, Luigi Fossati, Gino Zaninotto and Giovanni Tamburelli (Italy), to mention only a few better known names in the sindonological world.

He was a leader in Shroud studies for 52 years, a Redemptorist for 62 and President of the Holy Shroud Guild for 40 years. His obituary is amongst several in this issue 2 SHROUD NEWS No 113 (April 1999) EDITORIAL I have not been able to bring you obituaries of several recently deceased Shroud personalities and so this issue contains five of them. Hilda Leynen of Belgium aged 75; Baron Francois van der Straten Waillet of Belgium aged 88; Revd Fr Adam Otterbein of New York aged 82; Cardinal Anastasio Ballestrero of Turin aged 85 and Molly Drew of Templecombe aged 85. I knew or had met all of these Shroud people and I have included some pictures with the obituaries. Still to be eulogised are Bro Michael Buttigieg of Malta and Rodger Apple of New York. The interesting aspect of the five deaths noted in this issue is their relatively great age (average 83), which is encouraging. Following the extraordinary announcement in Turin last year that there would be no international conference associated with the year 2000 exposition, news has come of one being organised in Orvieto, Italy, to coincide with the dates of the Exposition of the Shroud in late August 2000.

These are the proceedings of a 1989 symposium on Fr. Quadrio at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome. Presentation Fr. Giuseppe Quadrio spent the last fourteen years of his brief and intensive life as a teacher of dogmatic theology in the Theology Department of what was then the Salesian Pontifical Athenaeum of Turin (now Salesian Pontifical University in Rome). He was also chairman of the Department (from 1954 to 1959), up to the time his illness forced his retirement. Teaching theology was the main job given him, and he consecrated his best energies to that, with great seriousness and dedication, bringing to fruition what he had matured in the years of preparation for this task. But more than an assignment or a duty, he always saw a privileged and unique mission. He pushed himself to make an authentic existential synthesis of study, teaching and life; of his study and his life; of theological investigation and contemporary reality; of its problems and challenges. For the students, this was – as numerous testimonies demonstrate – the most important and eloquent lesson of Fr. Quadrio: doing theology with gaze turned with constant attention to those hearing the doctrine, to the students in front of him as well as those far off, but no less important, men of today with their conditionings and culture. He succeeded above all in “doing theology” in the crucible of his own life.

Whilst I have my personal reservations about the ultimate importance of this test, it cannot be denied that, whatever the result, the quest for knowledge and information about this extraordinarily mystifying object will continue apace. Accordingly I have devoted a large part of this issue to an article I have compiled from some recent sources bringing together some of the carbon 14 details as they stand at present. An interesting activity in the next few weeks will be the showing of the Brooks Institute Shroud Photographic Exhibit, now owned by the Australia-based South East Asia Research Centre for the Holy Shroud (SEARCH), for the first time in Canada. I understand that the Calgary Exhibition attracts more than a million visitors and that by the end of May this year the organisers had already pre-sold over 100,000 entry tickets.

The French Lettre Mensuelle commented on the significance of the papers by Ribay, Babinet, Mrs Jackson, Fossati, Zaninotto, LeGrand, Bongert, Pfeiffer and Schlomer, Mr Jackson, Clercq, Dubarle, and Lejeune. In the American Shroud Sources abstracts were reprinted of "some of the most significant" of over thirty papers. These were by Kouznetsov, Van Haelst, Lavoie, Morgan, Clercq and Rinaudo. On the other hand the British BSTS Newsletter commented on the papers of Zaninotto, Pfeiffer, Morgan, Lejeune, Bergeret, Lindner, Dickinson, Lavoie, John Jackson, Piczek, Maloney, Adler and Kouznetsov. This variation of opinion from one country to another and from one journal to another, is, of course, the very lifeblood of unbiased research. It seems to me, as we come to the end of another year of Shroud research, that there is far greater realisation that the carbon testings of 1988 are less and less acceptable. Almost every paper delivered at the Rome conference and most of what has been written and said before and since makes it quite plain that something was very wrong with the Turin capers. Just what that is has yet to be determined, if it ever is.

    64 SHROUD NEWS No 50 (December 1988) NATIONAL CATHOLIC NEWS SERVICE November 1988 ROME: The Shroud of Turin continues to stir passions in Italy almost a month after test results announced the cloth is medieval in origin. The Archdiocese of Turin and the Italian Catholic newspaper Avvenire have been inundated by letters since the carbon-14 test results were announced by Turin Cardinal Anastasio Ballestrero. In letters, columns and talk shows, Italians speculate on the possible flaws of the carbon-14 tests used to date the cloth and the questions science still has not answered about what some believe is the burial cloth of Christ. The highly respected Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica published a commentary by Jesuit Father Giovanni Marchesi titled "The Mystery of the Shroud Continues." Father Marchesi recounted the story of the three laboratories that tested pieces of the Shroud and determined it to be from the 13th or 14th century. He then raised a series of puzzles that he said science had still not been able to solve, including: The three dimensional form of the Shroud figure. Its similarity to a photograph negative The traces of blood on the cloth The "anatomical perfection" of the figure, a rendering not possible in the Middle Ages, according to Father Marchesi. The traces of Middle Eastern plant pollens found in the cloth. The traces of what appear to be ancient coins on the eyes of the figure, a Middle Eastern burial technique. "Could a medieval artist have such a vast store" of "historical, chemical, anatomical and scientific knowledge which the most advanced modern science only recently discovered or has not yet deciphered?" Father Marchesi asked.
