Having recently recommended to the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering that they increase their activities in heritage bridge conservation, I was happy to participate in this inventory project as such initiatives highlight the significant and often overlooked relationship between engineering advancements and our cultural heritage. Over time the widespread loss of heritage bridges has occurred for a variety of reasons: deterioration, changes in highway requirements, or damage by storms like Hurricane Hazel. Today, however, with increasing attention towards cultural heritage, creative solutions are being explored for preserving heritage bridges. Protecting, conserving and celebrating our heritage bridges contributes to not only a greater understanding of the development of approaches to modern day engineering but also marks our progress as a nation, from early settlement to today’s modern and progressive communities. Given Neptis’s focus on regional issues, we have supported Levy’s work because it demon- strates clearly that regional rapid transit cannot function eff ectively without a well-designed network at the core of the region. Toronto does not yet have such a network, as you will discover through the maps and historical photographs in this interactive web-book. We hope the material will contribute to ongoing debates on the need to create such a network. 2.0 DISTRICT HISTORY 2.1 Historic Villages in Vaughan in the area, which provided the beginnings of a rich cultural heritage. Tillitson, 1955. Special Notes One very useful feature of the material is further described in the two attached pages. This is the carefully annotated study of a good many of the important large railroads of the United States complete within their own files, these to be found within the official state of incorporation. Here will be included page references to the frequently huge number of small short-line roads that usually wound up by being “taken in” to the larger and expending Class II and I roads. Some of these files, such as the New York Central or the Pennsylvania Railroad are very big themselves. Michigan, Wisconsin, Oregon, and Washington are large because the many lumber railroads have been extensively studied out. -

Railfan Guide
A Guide to Railfanning in Toronto 2009 Toronto Railway Historical Association The TRHA receives frequent requests from railway enthusiasts seeking information about what there is to do in the city. We have compiled a list of railfan activities around the Greater Toronto Area that one can participate in during 2009. Toronto Railway Heritage Centre The railway museum located in the 32-stall John Street Roundhouse is under construction throughout 2009. • Stalls 1-14 are occupied by Steam Whistle Brewing, which offers regular tours of the brewery a well as a venue for social functions. http://www.steamwhistle.ca/ • Stalls 18-32 are occupied by Leon’s Furniture Store, which is scheduled to open in the summer of 2009. http://www.leons.ca/lang.aspx • Stalls 15-16-17 are occupied by the Toronto Railway Heritage Centre, which is now under construction. It is not anticipated that public tours of the museum section of the Roundhouse will be available in 2009. • Roundhouse Park contains the following artifacts: * The 120-foot rotating turntable built in 1929 and recently restored and operational on limited occasions until the museum opens. * Several pieces of railway equipment now under cover while museum construction is ongoing. See list below. * The 1896 Don Station, recently relocated from Todmorden Museum and about to undergo restoration. * The 1896 Cabin D interlocking tower originally located west of Bathurst St. and its auxiliary building/toolshed, both about to undergo restoration. * A restored century-old grade crossing watchman’s building. * Canadian National steam locomotive 6213, on display at the Exhibition Grounds since 1960, will be moved to Roundhouse Park in 2009. -
