August 1931 in Trins, Tirol) war ein österreichischer Botaniker. Er war der Vater von Otto Wettstein, Fritz von Wettstein und Wolfgang Wettstein (1898–1984). Er war Begründer einer Pflanzensystematik. Sein botanisches Autorenkürzel lautet „WETTST.“ Seine Frau war Adele Kerner von Marilaun Richard Wettstein auf der 50- (1863–1938), die Tochter von Anton Kerner von Marilaun. Er war Schüler, Assistent und Schwiegersohn von Anton Kerner von Marilaun. 1886 wurde er Dozent für Botanik und 1888 Adjunkt am Botanischen Garten und Museum in Wien. Ab 1892 war er ordentlicher Professor für Botanik und Direktor des Botanischen Gartens und Instituts der Universität Prag. 1894 wurde er Mitglied der Leopoldina.[1] 1899 wurde er Ehrengrab auf dem Wiener zum ordentlichen Professor für Systematische Botanik an Zentralfriedhof die Universität Wien berufen, wo er als Direktor auch dem von ihm erneuerten Botanischen Garten der Universität Wien und dem Institut für Botanik vorstand. Garten und Institutsgebäude wurden unter seiner Leitung 1904/05 neu errichtet. Ab 1901 war er Präsident der Wiener Zoologisch-Botanischen Gesellschaft. Forschungsreisen führten ihn 1901, als Teilnehmer einer botanischen Expedition der Wiener Akademie der Wissenschaften, nach Brasilien und 1929/30 mit seinem Sohn Fritz nach Süd- und Ostafrika. 1908 war er Vorsitzender der Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte. Ab 1910 war er Mitglied der Akademie der Wissenschaften und 1919 deren Vizepräsident. -

SPETA Abstract: Otto STAPF (1857-1933), an Upper Austrian botanist, who made his career at Kew. – The journal "Stapfia" initiated by F. SPETA in 1977 and published by the "Botanische Arbeitsgemeinschaft" of the Upper Austrian Museum gives the opportunity to shed light on biography and bibliography of Otto STAPF, after whom this journal was named. Special emphasis is put on the years 1857-1889 which he spent in Austria. He was born on 23. 3. 1857 in Perneck close to Bad Ischl as the son of the salt- pit worker Josef STAPF and his wife Maria with maiden name NIEDERLE from Iglau. He attended primary school in Hall in Tyrol and Hallstatt, went to the gymnasium in Salzburg, Linz and Vienna, studied botany at Vienna University, and made his Ph. D. thesis on "Krystalloide der Pflanzen" under J. WIESNER. From 1882-1889 he was assistant professor of A. KERNER at the Institute of Botany of Vienna University. In 1885 he made a collection trip to Persia, financed by POLAK. In 1888 he made his habilitation in systematic botany at Vienna University. A. KERNER unpleasantly pushed him off the institute in order to free his position for R. WETTSTEIN the husband of his daughter Adele. STAPF made friendship with many colleagues at Vienna University and many members of the Zoological-Botanical Society. In January 1891 he was employed by the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew (England). -

I’m writing this on a soggy Sunday, February 4. January was one of the rainiest on record, with a yard of rain at the airport (and much more on the north shore). The collateral good news is that almost everything in the garden is galloping towards spring. Aconites, galanthus and hellebores are in bloom and buds are bursting out everywhere else. The blooms on our R. cilpinense are eye poppers. The down side? The garden is too sodden for work, and one always worries about nutrient leaching, or at least I do! And while on the topic, please remember to dig out chunks of those still dormant hostas and ferns and stick them in 1-gallon pots for sale in May. -
