Davis was first elected as an MPP in the 1959 provincial election. Under John Robarts, he was "the cabinet minister, overseeing the education portfolio. " He succeeded Robarts as premier. After retiring, Davis was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1985. He has served on numerous corporate boards and "played a role in creating the Conservative Party of Canada.
