Duncan, Ph.D. Magali Cornier Michael, Ph.D. Dean, McAnulty College and Chair, Department of English Graduate School of Liberal Arts Professor of English iii ABSTRACT PRIVATE READER, PUBLIC REDACTOR: NARRATIVE STRATEGIES OF THE NINETEENTH-CENTURY FEMALE REVISIONIST By Amy Criniti Phillips May 2011 Dissertation supervised by Laura Callanan, Ph.D. This dissertation investigates the vital role of the private female reading experience in the creation of the mid-Victorian British woman writer‘s authorial persona. In particular, I examine the role of the female redactor, a woman writer who revises a particular text, genre, or convention within a patriarchal literary tradition. The public and private contexts of the female redactor become imperative to the text that she creates, for the final narrative product is not only a public revision but also a series of private, gendered negotiations that define the woman writer and determine her contribution to female authorship. With a specific focus on Geraldine Jewsbury, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Mary Elizabeth Braddon, I closely examine the ways in which these female redactors invoke and challenge male-authored texts within an established patriarchal literary tradition in order to create for themselves a distinctly female literary identity. Chapter One centers on Geraldine Jewsbury‘s feminist revision of Thomas Carlyle‘s gospel of work in her novel, The Half iv Sisters (1848), in which Jewsbury emphasizes the importance of women‘s work in Victorian England. Chapter Two explores the manner in which Elizabeth Barrett Browning— inspired by John Donne‘s Songs and Sonets (1633) in her own Sonnets from the Portuguese (1850)—engages in a gendered revision of the Petrarchan sonnet, both in content and form, in order to represent realistically the complex poetic place of woman as desiring subject, desired object, and empowered female poet. Chapter Three examines Mary Elizabeth Braddon‘s The Doctor’s Wife (1864), in which Braddon aims to subvert critical understandings of high and low literary culture that dismiss the value of both the female consumer and the sensation genre. I conclude with a brief epilogue, which focuses on two contemporary revisions of nineteenth-century female-authored texts: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Jane Slayre. These co-authored revisions of classic nineteenth- century texts, which simultaneously lampoon and pay homage to nineteenth-century female authorship, highlight the importance not only of revision as a narrative strategy for constructing authorial identity but also of a nineteenth-century female literary tradition that mid-Victorian female redactors aimed to establish. v DEDICATION I dedicate this dissertation to the late Albert C. Firstly, I thank the late Albert C. Labriola, my dear friend and mentor, who introduced me to the love poetry of John Donne. As his research assistant I devoted seven years to The Donne Variorum, and—to Dr. Labriola‘s great satisfaction and my own dismay—I eventually developed an affinity for Donne‘s love poetry. Secondly, I thank my dissertation director, Laura Callanan, for her unwavering support, infinite patience, constructive feedback, and sound advice throughout the dissertation process. My profound experiences in the first graduate class that Laura taught at Duquesne actually inspired me to pursue a Ph.D. in English, and she has been ―stuck‖ with me ever since. Moreover, it was in her ―Victorian Poetry‖ course that I first became fixated on the literary connection between Elizabeth Barrett Browning and John Donne and fell in love with the concept of revision. A full programme for the Society covers the usual wide range (including our mandated occasional paper on Burns), and we will also make room for one of the most important of Thomas’s texts, the Bible. 2012 sees a milestone in the publication of volume 40 of the Carlyle Letters, whose first volumes appeared in 1970 (though the project was a whole decade older in the making). There will be a conference (10-12 July) of academic Carlyle specialists in Edinburgh to mark the occasion – part of the wider celebrations that the English Literature department will be holding to celebrate its own 250th anniversary of Hugh Blair’s appointment to the chair of Rhetoric, making Edinburgh the first recognisable English department ever. The Carlyle Letters have been an important part of the research activity of the department for nearly half a century, and there will also be a public lecture later in November (when volume 40 itself should have arrived in the country from the publishers in the USA). As part of the conference there will be a Thomas Green lecture, and members of the Society will be warmly invited to attend this and the reception which follows. Details are in active preparation, and the Society will be kept informed as the date draws closer. Meantime work on the Letters is only part of the ongoing activity, on both sides of the Atlantic, to make the works of both Carlyles available, and to maintain the recent burst of criticism which is helping make their importance in the Victorian period more and more obvious.

    PART III: George Eliot and The Mill on the Floss 189 CHAPTER EIGHT George Eliot and Her Suitors: the “Hatched Chick” Becomes a Rooster The story of The Mill on the Floss, which is very much a story about the emergence of Marian Evans/George Eliot as a professional author, actually began a few years before the appearance of that pivotal book with the anonymous publication of Eliot’s first novel (really a series of novellas) in the pages of Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine (Maga). Lewes first submitted Evans’s work to the venerable Scottish publisher, John Blackwood, on 6 November 1856, when Evans was still editing John Chapman’s Westminster Review.1 The submission was “The Sad Fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton,” the first of three novella-length sketches that would eventually form the whole of Scenes of Clerical Life.     Theory in Action, Vol. 13, No. 4, October (© 2020) DOI:10.3798/tia.1937-0237.2049 The Warring Brothers: Borges Reads Kafka and Flaubert Daniel Balderston1 This article examines the preparatory materials that Borges used to teach courses at the Colegio Libre de Estudios Superiores in Buenos Aires, on Kafka in 1951 and on Flaubert in 1952. Though several well known essays emerged from these courses – “Kafka y sus precursors”, “Flaubert y su destino ejemplar” and “Vindicación de Bouvard et Pécuchet” – the manuscripts reveal far more of Borges's research and thinking about the two authors. Key concepts that he develops in these essays include his unusual (and influential) idea of the “precursor” that is only revealed through reading later works and heterodox ideas about realism and verisimilitude. This document illustrates an area of Rouen of around 20 meters long by 1 metre wide in a technical and detailed manner (architecture, graphics). His work needed more than 16,000 sheets kept in a wooden box which was 11 centimetres thick. Sent to the city's aldermen, this true 16th Century masterpiece is currently a unique example in Europe. Whilst this document is technical, above all, its original nature is a fine example kept within the Rouen city archives. Le Livre des Fontaines has also been used as staging for the Gros Horloge, a symbol of the city, which was connected to the city hotel where the aldermen stayed during construction.

Anyone familiar with the town of Gardiner would recognize the salient features of this description-house, hillside, road, railroad, and river. The amazing thing, in view of the fact that this last theme discussed rep!resents a sizable fraction of Robin­ son's output, is that one does not have an overwhelming sense of dismay and bleakness after reading his poetry. To sum up, there are a number of Maine influences in Robin­ son's poetry. His inlagery owes much to the sea, streams, towns, farms, and forests of Maine; the weather also had its impact. Robinson's chief interest was in character, and there were a number of recognizable "Maine" typ'es that he presented: the tall-tale artist, the eccentric individualist, the ne'er-do-well, the strong-willed stoic, and the gossip. His themes were fre­ quently related to Maine character and times. The Protestant Ethic in both its positive and negative aspects played its role.
