THE CARLYLE SOCIETY SESSION 2011-2012 OCCASIONAL PAPERS 24 • Edinburgh 2011 1 2 President’s Letter With another year’s papers we approach an important landmark in Carlyle studies. A full programme for the Society covers the usual wide range (including our mandated occasional paper on Burns), and we will also make room for one of the most important of Thomas’s texts, the Bible. 2012 sees a milestone in the publication of volume 40 of the Carlyle Letters, whose first volumes appeared in 1970 (though the project was a whole decade older in the making). There will be a conference (10-12 July) of academic Carlyle specialists in Edinburgh to mark the occasion – part of the wider celebrations that the English Literature department will be holding to celebrate its own 250th anniversary of Hugh Blair’s appointment to the chair of Rhetoric, making Edinburgh the first recognisable English department ever. The Carlyle Letters have been an important part of the research activity of the department for nearly half a century, and there will also be a public lecture later in November (when volume 40 itself should have arrived in the country from the publishers in the USA). As part of the conference there will be a Thomas Green lecture, and members of the Society will be warmly invited to attend this and the reception which follows. Details are in active preparation, and the Society will be kept informed as the date draws closer. Meantime work on the Letters is only part of the ongoing activity, on both sides of the Atlantic, to make the works of both Carlyles available, and to maintain the recent burst of criticism which is helping make their importance in the Victorian period more and more obvious. -

Donald C. Masters I l· GEORGE ELIOT AND THE EVANGELICALS THE. ENGLISH EvANGELICALs were badly treated by the novelists of the nineteenth century. Almost invariably they were presented in an unfavourable light; usually they were regarded with patronizing contempt. A notable example of this attitude occurs in Th~ N~wcomes when Thackeray gives a biting description of Miss Sophia Alethea Hobson and the Clapham Sect. Anthony Trollope, more dispassionate, did not express the same contempt for Evangelicals as a class. He probably disliked certain of his characters as people rather than as Evangelicals; but since some of his most repulsive characters, notably the Bishop and Mrs. Proudie and the Rev. Obadiah Slope, were Evangelicals they tended inevitably to discredit Evangelicalism. Dickens' attitude to Evangelicals was indicated by his description of the experiences of Mr. Weller Senior with his second wife and her pious friends in Th~ Pickwick Pap~rs . "She's too good a creature for me, Sammy . ..." , complained Mr. Weller. "I should wery much like to see your mother-in-law born again. Wouldn't I put her out to nurse!" While George Eliot (1819-1880) came to dislike the Evangelical viewpoint, her treatment of Evangelicals, particularly in her early novels, was much more sympa thetic than that of other Victorian novelists. This kindliness was in part the result of Eliot's Evangelical upbringing. Although her parents were not Evangelicals, she attended two Evangelical schools: Mrs. Wallingford's school, Nuneaton, where Maria Lewis, a strong Anglican Evangelical, was principal, and the Misses Frank lins' school at Coventry. The Misses Franklin were daughters of a Baptist minister. -

University of South Carolina October-November. 2008· FOREWORD This exhibition welcomed to the University the Thirty-Ninth Annual Meeting of the Victorians Institute, a two-day conference bringing to Columbia nearly a hundred Victorian scholars from the south-east and across the United States. So many of the great writers of the Victorian age are still well-known names that myriads of others get overlooked or neglected. The University of South Carolina's Department of Rare Books & Special Collections has first editions and even manuscript material from many of the best-remembered Victorian writers, but it also preserves the writings of others who are now almost forgotten. In some cases, such lesser-known items may be even rarer than long-sought-after first editions by the most famous names. The current exhibition juxtaposes work by major Victorians, such as Charles Dickens, Alfred Tennyson, Charlotte Bronte, and George Eliot, with the work of some of these other · writers who deserve to be better-known. -

HOW GEORGE ELIOT CAME TO WRITE FICTION By Rosemary Ashton We are celebrating one hundred and fifty years since the publication in volume form of George Eliot's first work of fiction, Scenes of Clerical Life, three stories printed first in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine between January and November 1857, and then in two volumes in January 1858. I will tell the story of how George Eliot came to write fiction by moving backwards from the Scenes themselves, via George Eliot's journal entry of 6 December 1857, 'How I Came to Write Fiction', to her literary criticism in the Westminster Review in the earlier 1850s, and finally to two letters, of 1849 and 1846, in order to demonstrate, with the benefit of hindsight, how we can observe her writing talent appearing more than a decade before she dared to try her hand at fiction, and what we can conclude about her attitude towards identifying herself as a writer of fiction, particularly with reference to the decision to write under a male pseudonym. -

THE CARLYLE SOCIETY SESSION 2013-2014 OCCASIONAL PAPERS 26 • Edinburgh 2013 1 2 President’s Letter 2013-14 will be a year of changes for the Carlyle Society of Edinburgh. Those of you who receive notification of meetings by email will already have had the news that, after many years, we are leaving 11 Buccleuch Place. We have enjoyed the hospitality of Lifelong Learning for decades but they, too, are moving. So we are meeting – for this year – in the seminar room on the first floor of 18 Buccleuch Place. There is one flight of stairs (I used it for decades! It’s not bad) and we will be comfortably housed there. Usual time. The Carlyle Letters are moving steadily towards the completion of the correspondence of Thomas and Jane; with Jane’s death in 1866 we will have published all the known letters between them, and we plan to tidy off the process with some papers from the months immediately following her death, and papers more recently come to light, namely volumes 43-44. The Carlyle Letters Online are also moving steadily to catch up with the published volumes. Volume 40 was celebrated with a public lecture in Autumn 2012; volume 41 will appear in printed form in about a month’s time, and the materials for volume 42 will be going to Duke in about a week’s time from when these words are written. We are grateful to the English Literature department for access to our new premises in 18 Buccleuch Place; to Andy Laycock of the University’s printing department for Herculean efforts with our annual papers; to those members who now accept their annual mailing in electronic form, a huge saving in time and money. -

She is the author of great classics "Middlemarch" "Adam Bede" "The Mill on the Floss" "Romolaand "Daniel Deronda/" Prior to the publication of these classics there is the charming and touching work "Scenes of a Clerical Life." Mary Ann was living without benefit of clergy with the author/scientist/man of letters George Henry Lewes who couldn't divorce his mad wife to mary the homely but brilliant Mary Ann (she spoke seven languages and had written widely on biblical criticism, science, book reviews and essays of erudition and wit). Lewes suggested she try her hand at fiction. The result is this collection of three stories which was published monthly in the liberal "Westminster Review" owned by the Blackwood Family in 1857. -

Reviewed by Stella Pratt-Smith, University of Oxford There are few more pervasive metaphors in our conceptualizations of the human than the industrial imaginary explored by Tamara Ketabgian in The Lives of Machines. The “fuel” of food saves us from “running out of steam” or becoming “broken” components within an “overheated” economy; these metaphors are akin to Ketabgian’s example from Charlotte Brontë’s Shirley (1849) in which Robert Moore exclaims that “the machinery of all my nature, the whole enginery of this human mill, the boiler which I take to be the heart, is fit to burst” (1). -
