Donald C. Masters I l· GEORGE ELIOT AND THE EVANGELICALS THE. ENGLISH EvANGELICALs were badly treated by the novelists of the nineteenth century. Almost invariably they were presented in an unfavourable light; usually they were regarded with patronizing contempt. A notable example of this attitude occurs in Th~ N~wcomes when Thackeray gives a biting description of Miss Sophia Alethea Hobson and the Clapham Sect. Anthony Trollope, more dispassionate, did not express the same contempt for Evangelicals as a class. He probably disliked certain of his characters as people rather than as Evangelicals; but since some of his most repulsive characters, notably the Bishop and Mrs. Proudie and the Rev. Obadiah Slope, were Evangelicals they tended inevitably to discredit Evangelicalism. Dickens' attitude to Evangelicals was indicated by his description of the experiences of Mr. Weller Senior with his second wife and her pious friends in Th~ Pickwick Pap~rs . "She's too good a creature for me, Sammy . ..." , complained Mr. Weller. "I should wery much like to see your mother-in-law born again. Wouldn't I put her out to nurse!" While George Eliot (1819-1880) came to dislike the Evangelical viewpoint, her treatment of Evangelicals, particularly in her early novels, was much more sympa thetic than that of other Victorian novelists. This kindliness was in part the result of Eliot's Evangelical upbringing. Although her parents were not Evangelicals, she attended two Evangelical schools: Mrs. Wallingford's school, Nuneaton, where Maria Lewis, a strong Anglican Evangelical, was principal, and the Misses Frank lins' school at Coventry. The Misses Franklin were daughters of a Baptist minister. -

Department of English The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada Date May, 1971 ABSTRACT In an attempt to explain the discrepancy between the intellectual and imaginative elements in George Eliot's art, her version of the pastoral in Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, and Silas Marner is examined. Based on the Warwickshire countryside of her childhood and on the Wordsworthian notion of childhood, her pastoral is the en• vironmental correlative to the spiritual development of a character according to Ludwig Feuerbach's "Religion of Humanity." The pastoral is used to portray man's initial happy state* that is informed by his own egoism and limited viewpoint. The pastoral is also used to portray a kind of second Eden that is inherited by those men who have achieved a wider vision in the "Religion of Humanity." At the same time, the pastoral has certain unconscious associations for George Eliot which produce an imaginative pattern that is different from the one she consciously intends. -

Emergentism As an Option in the Philosophy of Religion: Between Materialist Atheism and Pantheism
SURI 7 (2) 2019: 1-22 Emergentism as an Option in the Philosophy of Religion: Between Materialist Atheism and Pantheism James Franklin University of New South Wales Abstract: Among worldviews, in addition to the options of materialist atheism, pantheism and personal theism, there exists a fourth, “local emergentism”. It holds that there are no gods, nor does the universe overall have divine aspects or any purpose. But locally, in our region of space and time, the properties of matter have given rise to entities which are completely different from matter in kind and to a degree god-like: consciousnesses with rational powers and intrinsic worth. The emergentist option is compared with the standard alternatives and the arguments for and against it are laid out. It is argued that, among options in the philosophy of religion, it involves the minimal reworking of the manifest image of common sense. Hence it deserves a place at the table in arguments as to the overall nature of the universe. Keywords: Emergence; pantheism; personal theism; naturalism; consciousness 1. INTRODUCTION The main options among world views are normally classifiable as either materialist atheism, pantheism (widely understood) or personal theism. According to materialist atheism, there exists nothing except the material universe as we ordinarily conceive it, and its properties are fully described by science (present or future). According to personal theism, there exists a separate entity (or entities) of a much higher form than those found in the 2019 Philosophical Association of the Philippines 2 Emergentism as an Option in the Philosophy of Religion material universe, a god or gods. -

PART III: George Eliot and The Mill on the Floss 189 CHAPTER EIGHT George Eliot and Her Suitors: the “Hatched Chick” Becomes a Rooster The story of The Mill on the Floss, which is very much a story about the emergence of Marian Evans/George Eliot as a professional author, actually began a few years before the appearance of that pivotal book with the anonymous publication of Eliot’s first novel (really a series of novellas) in the pages of Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine (Maga). Lewes first submitted Evans’s work to the venerable Scottish publisher, John Blackwood, on 6 November 1856, when Evans was still editing John Chapman’s Westminster Review.1 The submission was “The Sad Fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton,” the first of three novella-length sketches that would eventually form the whole of Scenes of Clerical Life. Of this first sketch Lewes boasted to Blackwood that “such humour, pathos, vivid presentation and nice observation have not been exhibited (in this style) since the ‘Vicar of Wakefield’— and in consequence of that opinion I feel quite pleased in negotiating the matter with you.”2 During this first interaction on Evans’s behalf, Lewes aimed to convince Blackwood that this unknown author was someone whose work was worth adding to 1 In addition to a long essay entitled “Worldliness and Otherworldliness: the Poet Young,” Eliot would write a segment called “History, Biography, Voyages, and Travels,” as well as her standard “Belles Lettres” section for her final contributions to the Westminster Review, 67 (January 1857). ISBN 0 7546 5054 5 The outlines of Marian Evans's life in the years immediately preceding her emergence as George Eliot are well-known-her work for the Westminster Review, her relationships with Chapman, Spencer and Lewes, and then her departure with the latter to Germany in July 1854. What these two studies do in their different ways is fill in the picture with fascinating detail. In focusing on the house that John Chapman rented from 1847 to 1854 and from which he ran the Westminster Review and his publishing business, Rosemary Ashton recreates the circle of radical intellectuals that the future novelist came into contact with through living there and working as the effective editor of Chapman' s journal. -

POLITICS AND PASTORAL IN SILAS MARNER By Barbara Hardy When eighteen-year-old sumameless Eppie stands by Silas Mamer and against Godfrey Cass she joins a line of subversive children in Victorianfiction. Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre speaks out against her aunt; Dickens's Oliver Twist asks for more gruel; his Paul Dombey asks the capitalist father,'What is money after all?' One child rebels against adult power; one against institutional power; one against the cash nexus. The children are all economic dependants but there is no emphasis on class. Oliver behaves like a little gentleman; Paul is a little gentleman; Jane tells Brocklehurst she would not like to be poor, and goes to a charitable school for children of gentlefolk. Eppie's father is gentry, her mother a barmaid, but she is the only one of these four rebels who is working-class by upbringing, who chooses the working class, and who rejects the upper class. -

JAPANESE BRANCH REPORT By Eri Satoh On Saturday 28 November 2015 , the Nineteenth Annual Convention of The George Eliot Fellowship of Japan was held at Obirin University. The morning session started with an opening address by Maiko Otake (Oborin University). Two papers were presented in the morning session. The first was chaired by Hiroshi Ikezono (Yamaguchi University) and the second by Michiko Kurisu (Daito Bunka University). The first paper by Shinsuke Hori (Nihon University) was entitled 'Romola (1863): The Description of Nature and Social and Private Spaces in five "Recollections"'. He analyzed how Eliot acquired her writing techniques in the early novels as she developed her recognition of nature described in five 'Recollections'. He pointed out that in 'Recollections' she gradually comes to describe landscape in detail and use such detailed description to project her subjectivity. He concluded that this way of writing, for example, likening life to the stream of a river, can be seen in novels like Romola as well as Adam Bede and The Mill on the Floss. -

HOW GEORGE ELIOT CAME TO WRITE FICTION By Rosemary Ashton We are celebrating one hundred and fifty years since the publication in volume form of George Eliot's first work of fiction, Scenes of Clerical Life, three stories printed first in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine between January and November 1857, and then in two volumes in January 1858. I will tell the story of how George Eliot came to write fiction by moving backwards from the Scenes themselves, via George Eliot's journal entry of 6 December 1857, 'How I Came to Write Fiction', to her literary criticism in the Westminster Review in the earlier 1850s, and finally to two letters, of 1849 and 1846, in order to demonstrate, with the benefit of hindsight, how we can observe her writing talent appearing more than a decade before she dared to try her hand at fiction, and what we can conclude about her attitude towards identifying herself as a writer of fiction, particularly with reference to the decision to write under a male pseudonym. -

According to biographers, Lewes showed his selfless devotion to Eliot by encouraging her to begin and continue writing fiction; by foster- ing the mystery of her authorship; by managing her finances; by negotiating her publishing con- tracts; by managing her schedule; by hosting a salon to promote her books; and by staying close by her side for twenty-four years until death parted them. -

IN JANET DEMPSTER'S FOOTSTEPS: A REMINISCENCE By David Harper The road from Trent Valley Station down towards the town centre curves gently past the row of horse-chestnuts in Bond Gate with their white candles. To the young boy arriving to take up residence in Nuneaton it promised something new, always interesting, always just out of reach. From my earliest years I was a keen reader and felt the privilege of our local author's being one of the unquestioned greats; but it was George Eliot's north Warwickshire that initially attracted me, with The Mill on the Floss and Si/as Marner my favourites. This was reinforced by cycling the lanes for miles around, admiring the cottages and farmhouses, absorbing the atmosphere of the churches and, though much less consciously than she expressed it in a letter, 'being made happier by seeing well-cultivated land'.
