THE Thunder Bay-Superior North and Thunder Bay-Rainy River Riding Associations PRESENT An Evening with Bill Blaikie Join us as we hear from one of Parliament’s best speakers—the Honorable Bill Blaikie. Bill was a Member of Parliament from 1979 to 2008 represent- ing the railway community of Transcona and subsequently the Minister of Conservation and Government House Leader in the NDP Gov- ernment from 2009 to 2011. Blaikie had the longest continuous parliamen- tary record in the 38th and 39th Canadian parliaments, and in this capacity served as the Dean of the House. Blaikie was the Deputy Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons from 2006 to 2008. During his time in parlia- ment, Bill sat across from and regularly challenged 8 Prime Ministers— from Clark to Harper—4 Liberal and 4 Conservative Governments. Bill won a total of 9 elections with the results ranging from a cliff hanger of 219 votes to a high of 54% of the vote. As a member of the NDP Caucus he was the key voice on a number of issues over time— Social Policy, Health, Environment, External Affairs, Taxation, Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs, , Defense and Parliamentary Reform. Bill also held key Caucus positions from Chair to House Leader. Following coming 2nd to , in the leadership race, Bill was appointed Deputy Leader and Leader in the House in 2003 , a position he retained until Jack was elected to the House of Commons the following year. Among other long lasting decisions he was instrumental in forcing Minister of Health, Monique Bé- gin, to enact the in 1984, to deal with the crisis that extra-billing by physicians and user fees were causing for .In her memoirs, Bégin wrote that Blaikie waged "guerilla warfare" in the House of Commons over the issue. Bill will draw on his 29 years of service in the House of Commons and his 2 years as a Provincial Cabinet Minister to present: LIBERALS, UP TO THEIR SAME OLD TRICKS!
