‘TRADIZIONE E CONTAMINAZIONE’: AN ETHNOGRAPHY OF THE CONTEMPORARY SOUTHERN ITALIAN FOLK REVIVAL Stephen Francis William Bennetts BA (Hons), Australian National University, 1987 MA, Sydney University, 1993 Graduate Diploma (Communication), University of Technology, Sydney, 1999 This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia, School of Social Sciences, Discipline of Anthropology and Sociology 2012 ‘Pizzicarello’, Tessa Joy, 2010. 1 2 I have acquired the taste For this astringent knowledge Distilled through the Stringent application of the scientific method, The dry martini of the Intellectual world, Shaken, not stirred. But does this mean I must eschew Other truths? From ‘The Bats of Wombat State Forest’ in Wild Familiars (2006) by Liana Christensen 3 4 ABSTRACT The revival since the early 1990s of Southern Italian folk traditions has seen the ‘rediscovery’ and active recuperation, especially by urban revivalist actors, of le tradizioni popolari, popular traditional practices originating in peasant society which are still practiced by some traditional local actors in remote rural areas of Southern Italy. This thesis draws on interviews, participant observation and historical research carried out mainly during fieldwork in Rome and Southern Italy in 2002-3 to present an ethnography of the urban revivalist subculture which has been the main driving force behind the contemporary Southern Italian folk revival. In the course of my enquiry into why the movement has emerged, I combine both synchronic and diachronic perspectives, as well as a phenomenological analysis of revivalist motivation and agency, to explore the question of why contemporary urban revivalists have begun to take an interest in the archaic and marginalised cultural practices of rural Southern Italy. -

This series was the prelude of a franchise that has almost 100 different series (taking into consideration OVAS, films, etc…). “Gunpla Battle” is a game about the Gundam Universe in which two Mobile Suits fighting one against the other in order to decide which one is stronger. When building gunpla model kits (Gundam plastic Model aka. Gunpla) you normally have 2 options, you expose it, or you create a diorama for it. Now there’s another chance, you can play with him and show that your skills and your gunpla are the best. The original idea of this was born in 2013 with the series “Gundam Build Fighters” in which the characters create their own gunpla and fight with it in awesome battlefields. -

We offer a historical account of the role of digital games in the development of “the Mobile Suit Gundam” series from a portfolio perspective, and show how a combination of various types of game genres, or otherwise ‘ludo mix’, played a role in enhancing the franchise’s convergent and divergent strategies, which contributed to the success of the series. Our case can show some insight into the importance of adopting a macro-level portfolio approach when 1 Note: This article was amended on May 25, 2021 to address errors in Table 2 (rows pertaining to Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS). 2 Akinori Nakamura & Susana Tosca considering specific game design choices in the overall ludo mix within the franchise. Keywords Transmedia Storytelling, Media mix, Ludo mix, Business Strategy INTRODUCTION In the context of media production, the idea of transmediality is now more relevant than ever. With the global proliferation of broadband internet services, the number of over-the-top (OTT) media services is rising on a global scale. -

A History of Mecha
Ben Normoyle Miyake-sensei Manga May 5, 2013 A History of Mecha The genre of mecha has a rich and varied history. From its origins in the 60’s to the present day, mecha has grown and developed to be an interesting genre with many major achievements and several prominent figures in the field. This paper seeks to break down the growth of the mecha genre, identify key influences and patterns of its development, and serve as both an introduction to the genre and a survey of the field. First, before we can go into the history of mecha, we must first clearly define what mecha is. The colloquial definition that often comes up is simply ‘giant robots fighting.’ While this definition of the genre ignores several aspects, it seems accurate at first glance. When people think mecha, they generally think of series like Golion (in America known as Voltron) and Mobile Suit Gundam, which prominently feature oversized robots fighting other robots. If we take a look at a collection of prominent mecha series and their ‘stars’, we can definitely see a pattern of large robots emerging: the mobile suits in Gundam are each twenty meters tall, the titular mecha in Gunbuster is ten times that, and the titular mecha in Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann grows to the size of galaxies. Clearly, size is definitely a prominent aspect in these series. But does it necessarily have to be? When we look at some other series, we see some radically different sizes. Armored Trooper VOTOMs, for instance, features mecha a mere four meters tall, barely twice the heigh of a normal person.
