This series was the prelude of a franchise that has almost 100 different series (taking into consideration OVAS, films, etc…). “Gunpla Battle” is a game about the Gundam Universe in which two Mobile Suits fighting one against the other in order to decide which one is stronger. When building gunpla model kits (Gundam plastic Model aka. Gunpla) you normally have 2 options, you expose it, or you create a diorama for it. Now there’s another chance, you can play with him and show that your skills and your gunpla are the best. The original idea of this was born in 2013 with the series “Gundam Build Fighters” in which the characters create their own gunpla and fight with it in awesome battlefields. This game was developed a few months after the anime release. Be up to date, for any possible changes that could be done to the rules (Hopefully not) The game does not have any relation with Bandai at all, however in order to have a good relationship with series creators and also with Bandai, you can only use BANDAI Kits. I Hope you enjoy this board game as much as I did developing it. José Alberto Mesa Murgado, Game Designer. 3 Second Release: September 2014 Almost all Mobile Suits are allowed, there are some exceptions, and you can check them at the Gunpla Battle database, the gunpla battle wikia. In some tournaments they could choose to limit the Era, for example, let’s say that the only allowed Era is Universal Century and your gunpla, (which is Cherubin from Gundam 00 does not belong to that Era) you won’t be able to enter that tournament and if you do it, you’ll get expelled. But don’t worry too much about it, Gunpla Battle is a vast world and we are sure that you will know the rules of a tournament before applying for it. In this Rulebook you won’t be able to check all the available gunplas (and also, their respective statistics and boosts) If you want to do so, you’ll have to visit: www.gunpla-battle.wikia.com In Gunpla there are some different scales to build, customize and play. In this case, the best option would be the 1/144 in which the gunplas have an approximately height measure of 14 cm. All the following grades allowed are: Super Deformed, High Grade, Real Grade and Master Grade. Be up to the changes that could be done to the rulebook) If you don’t know where to buy your gunpla, there are some shops which sell them at quite a reasonable price (1200 yens are almost equally to 12 dollars so, is quite reasonable and you’ll get a cute gunpla) the ones I recommend are: Hobby link Japan (HLJ) and GGInfinite. These are our recommendations in order to enter the world of Gunpla This are Known as SD Gundams (left) and the High Grade Lane (right). Zaku Amazing RX-78-2 Gundam 4 Second Release: September 2014 What you need to play Well, that’s quite easy to answer, what is usually in all board games is to play in a plain surface, in this case you will need a table and some buildings that establish the battle field (check the allowed fields) of a minimum measure of 25 inches side. “Don’t worry busy people, this match won’t late He... He… “ Since this game is for 2 or more people you will need one gunpla for each, some dices, a ruler and, if the gunpla can’t stand by his own feet, a stand. The exact number of dices that you’ll need are 6 1 dice of 100 sides for attacks damage. 1d100 (Nº of dices, dice sides) 2 dice of 6 sides for initiative. 2d6 (Nº of dices, dice sides) 1 dice of 20 sides for shoots hit-misses and evasion. 1d20 (Nº of dices, dice sides) 2 dice of 4 sides for movement and dash. 2d4 (Nº of dices, dice sides) 5 Second Release: September 2014 Choosing your faction ONLY IF YOU ARE GOING TO PLAY ON THE ACTUAL ERA In this world, you will have to choose a faction to develop your skills and also to create the “Actual Era” which is a story we will be creating while we play, every two months there will be different tournament in some cities and two factions will confront. The game mode will be Team DeathMatch and there can only be up to three players playing in the same team, with 4 teams the game should be okay. Your team will represent a faction in the world, you’ll choose yours and the winner team will gain a territory the story will be developed with your wins. This part of the game has been built with the aim of creating an online story, different to what we are used to. You will need a custom machine and a character profile in the Game Database in order to start playing this. You are able to choose between the following genetic types: Newtype, Innovator, Coordinator, X-Rounder and Natural, obviously, you will have your genetic type skills independent from your unit skills There are 5 main factions inside the Custom Century (which includes all mobile suits from all the different existent eras) 6 Second Release: September 2014 Gunpla Battle is quite a simple game: we design it in order to be easy to play, and also as fun as other popular board games. Remember two really important things: 1º Respect your opponent or yours opponents. 2º Be trustworthy, or in other words, don’t cheat. If you do so, you’ll be automatically expelled. Before you start you will need to distribute your Gunpla points, there are lots of machines and lots of characteristics. Get fun and if you have any question or any idea that you think would benefit the game, please e-mail [email protected] 7 Second Release: September 2014 Notes 8 Second Release: September 2014 Profile card Pilot Name Faction Mobile Suit Code MS Name Points Distribution Energy Hit Points Speed Attack Fire Power Armour Y N Shield/Barriers Y N Specials SPECIALS 9 Second Release: September 2014 BASIC RULES How the game start: First, when you have been challenged to a fight. You will need to have your gunpla and a table, first of all we’ll decide who goes first you or your opponent. INICIATIVE This is the first thing to do at the start of the game, this way you will decide how to take the turns. Roll two six sided dice, whoever gets the higher result, goes first. That’s quite simple, right? Done? Then let’s move to the next step. Now you have to choose a side of the table and your opponent will have to choose the opposite one. PHASES There are 3 kind of actions you can do in your turn (A movement action, minor action and a complete action), every turn you can do one of those actions, however; You can exchange one minor action for a movement action and vice versa. You can exchange one complete action for a minor action or a movement one, but no vice versa. A movement action which can be a normal walk, jump, run or dash. Normal walk, this is done with a 4 sided dice, you roll your dice and you move your unit the quantity result (Result in inches) Run, this movement will waste more energy than a normal walk, also if your unit is too heavy you won’t be able to run (This is more than 3 adds without counting backpack or shield) you will roll two 4 sided dices and your unit will move that amount of inches. Dash, this is what wastes most of the movement actions, useful to get near to your enemy soon and do a good strategy. You roll one 4 sided dice plus one 6 sided dice (1d4+1d6). Jump, this is only useful to see an enemy from the air and also to evade buildings, rocks, or enemies. Roll a 4 sided dice A minor action has almost the same importance as a movement and includes the following aspects, you may choose only one out of: Change Weapons, Pick objects, Recharge. Changing weapons is simple, you save or throw to the ground one weapon and pick another, and this is useful if for example your Mobile Suit is too heavy, this will allow you to run. Also, if your ammo has been wasted you can change to a sword or a beam rifle. Energy needed: 20 Pick objects, sometimes there will be weapons in the ground, or ammo, if this is the case they will be really useful but you have to know that the more items you have, the more your weight is.

This episode sees our heroes shift from defense to escape, from the terror of the battle to the dread of knowing that the colony is bleeding oxygen and Zeon is coming back. There is no way out for them--except aboard the very same Federation warship that inadvertently led Zeon here in the first place, and brought the war to this neglected little island in space. THOM: This week we’re going to talk a bit about how the events on Side 7 reflect two related events during World War II. The first one was the bombing and firebombing of Japanese cities by American forces during the war, but the second was the Battle of Okinawa.

  • The Mobile Suit Gundam Franchise
The Mobile Suit Gundam Franchise: a Case Study of Transmedia Storytelling Practices and the Role of Digital Games in Japan Akinori (Aki) Nakamura College of Image Arts and Sciences, Ritsumeikan University 56-1 Toji-in Kitamachi, Kita-ku, Kyoto 603-8577 [email protected] Susana Tosca Department of Arts and Communication, Roskilde University Universitetsvej 1, P.O. Box 260 DK-4000 Roskildess line 1 [email protected] ABSTRACT The present study looks at the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise and the role of digital games from the conceptual frameworks of transmedia storytelling and the Japanese media mix. We offer a historical account of the development of “the Mobile Suit Gundam” series from a producer´s perspective and show how a combination of convergent and divergent strategies contributed to the success of the series, with a special focus on games. Our case can show some insight into underdeveloped aspects of the theory of transmedial storytelling and the Japanese media mix. Keywords Transmedia Storytelling, Media mix, Intellectual Property, Business Strategy INTRODUCTION The idea of transmediality is now more relevant than ever in the context of media production. Strong recognizable IPs take for example more and more space in the movie box office, and even the Producers Guild of America ratified a new title “transmedia producer” in 2010 1. This trend is by no means unique to the movie industry, as we also detect similar patterns in other media like television, documentaries, comics, games, publishing, music, journalism or sports, in diverse national and transnational contexts (Freeman & Gambarato, 2018). However, transmedia strategies do not always manage to successfully engage their intended audiences; as the problematic reception of a number of works can demonstrate.
